Ad-Rock Leads Anti-Hate Rally at Adam Yauch Park in New York
Many were horrified when they learned that Adam Yauch Park -- a Brooklyn memorial site dedicated to late Beastie Boys member MCA, whose real name is the park's namesake -- was defaced with Swastikas this past week. Unfortunately, that was just one of the many, many hate crimes that have taken place in the days since Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential Election, and it doesn't appear that they'll be slowing down any time soon. On Sunday, Yauch's bandmate and friend Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz led a group of religious leaders and elected officials at an anti-hate rally at the site of his friend's memorial. Ad-Rock made sure to denounce the hate crime that had taken place at the park.
"We're all here today because we're thinking the same thing: Painting swastikas on a children's playground is a messed-up thing to do," he said over a megaphone. "And for many of us, it has special meaning, because this park is named for Adam Yauch, who was my friend and bandmate for over 30 years, but he was also someone who taught nonviolence in his music, in his life, to all of us and to me. But this is more about someone in New York City"
Ad-Rock, like many others, credits the apparent uptick in hate crimes to the election of Donald Trump, whose Vice President Mike Pence has been said to hold homophobic views. "These incidents and this type of grafitti have been popping up all over our country "because we've elected a president that's given our children the message that it's okay to write 'white power' in their high school hallways. That it's okay to attack women and girls, that Latinos and Muslims and Jews are bad people, and that you can electroshock the gay out of someone," he said to a large crowd.
A bit later, Ad-Rock used more of his speaking time to donate to groups like Black Lives Matter, Planned Parenthood and United Way of Flint Michigan, organizations he believes help fight against inequality. "Do what you can. Take what you're good at it and what your truly enjoy and lend your services to the causes you care most about."
