Atlanta, the new small screen series on FX starring Childish Gambino, has become a breakout hit on television this fall. The show gives a voice to the Black millennial hip-hop fan like nothing else on TV right now. Created and executive produced by the 34-year-old rapper/actor, the series follows cousins Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles (played by Brian Tyree Henry) and Earnest "Earn" Marks (played by Gambino) as they try to navigate the Atlanta rap scene. So far, the guys are feeding off of Paper Boi's one viral hit while still trying to make ends meet for their families.
Earlier this month, FX reported that the fledging series scored the best premiere numbers for any basic cable primetime scripted comedy in over three years in the 18 to 49 demographic. Atlanta managed to rank as the most-watched telecast of a new comedy series in that demo since April 2014. Based on these numbers, Variety confirmed that the TV masterpiece was officially renewed for a 10-episode second season next fall.
Part of the beauty of Atlanta lies in its honest, comedic writing. From the awkward moments of silence to the unabashed racist pangs slipped into the conversation, this show is about way more than just hip-hop.
