Today in Hip-Hop: Bun B Drops ‘II Trill’ Album

2008: Texas rapper and UGK member Bun B dropped his second solo album in his Trill series II Trill on May 20, 2008.

After UGK member Pimp C’s untimely death in 2007, Bun B chose to carry on the group’s legacy still releasing the duo’s iconic sounds through his solo work on the Trill series. Following the success of 2005's Trill, Bun rounded up the hottest new acts of the time, from Sean Kingston, Lil Wayne and Lupe Fiasco to Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Webbie and Mike Jones, to double down on his tribute to Pimp C. The records on this Rap-a-Lot/Asylum/Atlantic released played with the common theme of political unrest and of course featured mentions of Pimp C on nearly every tack. Fueled by the summer singles "That's Gangsta" featuring Sean Kingston and "You're Everything" featuring Rick Ross and David Banner, II Trill debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts.

Often hailed as a godfather of hip-hop, Bun's political activist side has been on full display lately as a guest professor at Rice University and a 2016 campaign correspondent for Vice. Meanwhile Pimp C's legacy continues to live on with artists sampling the Underground King on wax for current records. Drake featured Pimp C on his 2016 album Views on the song "Faithful."
