Twitter had a field day today (April 3) when people started bringing up mixtapes that deserved Grammys. It's true that most mixtapes get looked at a different way than albums because of the label, and regardless of whether the separation is justified, it does lead to two different pools of music with two different standards of judgment.

Tapes from the likes of Wale, Jeezy, Freddie Gibbs and others are all named, as well as classics Da Drought 3Return of the PLK, 50 Cent is the Future and more.

The hashtag was apparently started by Twitter user @ and quickly caught fire on the social media platform. The first one she tweeted was Big K.R.I.T.'s 4eva N a Day and later tweeted albums from Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, and Casey Veggies.

Mixtapes have always been special, revered objects in hip-hop. They used to be the main vehicles of curation by DJs and radio personalities. But when the industry turned against it, things got weird and with the takeover of the internet, the entire meaning of what a mixtape is has changed in the last 10 years.

Still, plenty of tapes from before the age of computers are classics to this day. Before Wayne flooded the market, 50 and G-Unit were taking over the landscape, crushing other people's songs and proving they weren't fucking around. Mixtapes are still in the grey area, as releases like Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late blurred the line between albums and tapes.
