The second weekend of Coachella 2016 kicks off tonight (April 22), but footage and news from the first weekend is still surfacing. During Joey Badass' set, the rapper premiered a new song called "Devastated" for the packed crowd. With Statik Selektah on the wheels of steel, Joey reminisces on all the times he doubted himself and the patience it took to make it to performing in front of festival-sized crowds. Check out the performance above.

Joey's rise as an independent artist has been nothing short of astounding. Bursting onto the scene as a teenager, the Brooklyn MC scored a successful debut album with B4.Da.$$ and points to another great Brooklyn rapper as his inspiration.

I definitely didn’t always have the independent mind state,” Joey said in an interview with DJ Whoo Kid. But after reading Jay Z's Decoded and discovering that Hov once turned down a deal with Russell Simmons and Def Jam, Badass realized the independent route was the right one for him. “[Jay Z's] only thought was, ‘Damn I don’t want to be signed to this nigga, I wanna be this nigga.’ I kinda had that same perspective. But shout out to Jay, man, cause he was on it before a lot of people."

Joey wasn't the only rapper going in during the first weekend of Coachella 2016. Check out all the rappers who blessed the stage at the massive festival. Check out the full lineup and set times via Coachella's website.
