Metro Boomin Uncovers the Origin of “If Young Metro Don’t Trust You, I’m Gon Shoot You” Phrase

Running parallel with Future's rap ascension is that of beat maestro Metro Boomin, who has seen his musical takeover spill out onto the Internet thanks to the many memes employing his Future-spoken drop "If Young Metro don't trust you I'm gon shoot you." In an interview with DJ Drama and StreetzisWatchin Radio, Metro recounted the origin of the now infamous tag, starting at about the 4:15 mark.

“I’ve been using that as a tag in beats since about August. ‘Jumpman,’ before the song was recorded, that beat already said that," the 22-year-old producer said. "We had did this song with Uncle Murda one time, and one of the lines that Future said in there was, ‘If young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you.’ When he said that, it had a different tone, but I remember when we were in the studio he had another tone, which is the one that’s the tag that was just like muted. I just made sure to go back on the session and just get it and just go HAM with it.”

As Metro points out, the drop didn't originate at Tree Sounds Studios during the What a Time to Be Alive sessions but rather on Uncle Murda's song "Right Now," which is included below. Boomin goes on to explain his surprise that Kanye West chose to include the drop on "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" off his recently released The Life of Pablo.

"I had kinda sensed he liked it cause we were in the studio before. You know the little Kanye dance he does when he’s doing his thing? He was just going crazy doing that and saying 'If Young Metro don’t trust you…' I picked up that he appreciated it but I didn’t think he would want to go that HAM with it like that," he said.
