The hip-hop community was saddened last week when it was announced that A Tribe Called Quest member Phife Dawg had passed away at the age of 45 due to complications resulting from diabetes. While some have responded to the news with Phife and Tribe inspired music, a petition has likewise surfaced from fans who wish to co-name Linden Boulevard between 192 and 193 street in Queens A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard.

As of 11:30 a.m. Monday (March 28) the petition had received 3,249 supporters, nearly two-thirds of its 5,000 goal. The description on the petition page reads, "Sadly, this week it was reported that Malik 'Phife Dawg' Isaac Taylor of the Iconic Hip Hop group A Tribe Called Quest has died. We are requesting the cooperation of Council Member I. Deneek Miller and Speaker Mark-Viverito to support our new proposed co-naming of Linden Boulevard between 192 Street and 193 Street to: A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard."

A Tribe Called Quest had issued a statement on Phife's passing shortly after, saying, "Our hearts are heavy. We are devastated. This is something we weren’t prepared for although we all know that life is fleeting. It was no secret about his health and his fight. But the fight for his joy and happiness gave him everything he needed. The fight to keep his family happy, his soul happy and those around him happy, gave him complete and unadulterated joy… until he heeded his fathers call."

Sign the petition over at Change.org now to help bring A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard to Queens.
