The Weeknd performed his 2015 breakout hit "Earned It" at the 2016 Academy Awards tonight (Feb. 28) and you can watch the whole thing go down above.

The Toronto superstar is nominated for "Best Original Song" going up against songs like "Writing's On The Wall" written by Sam Smith and "Til It Happens To You" written by Lady Gaga. Weeknd's song was the beginning of his incredible run up to his second studio album Beauty Behind The Madness, so we're cheering for him to win.

"Earned It" came on the back of a huge Ariana Grande hit that Weeknd had been featured on called "Love Me Harder" in 2014. That led to two placements on the Fifty Shades OST and the hit that would start Weeknd's hot streak into 2015. Later on, he'd drop "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills," propelling him towards super stardom and an album release.

In October of last year, not long after he'd released his second studio album Beauty Hind the Madness, Weeknd talked to Rolling Stone about, amongst other things, giving away songs to Drake for the Six God's own album. "I was hungry....I was like, 'Dude, take anything," he says of Drake, whom Abel calls "my closest friend in the industry at that time." "I gave up almost half of my album. It's hard. I will always be thankful — if it wasn't for the light he shined on me, who knows where I'd be. And everything happens for a reason," he continues. "You never know what I would say if this success wasn't in front of me now."
