DJ Big Kap, a New York native who worked alongside the Notorious B.I.G. and created The Tunnel album with DJ Funk Flex, passed away at the age of 45 on Wednesday (Feb. 3).

According to Kap's road manager, Ab Traxx, who spoke with BillboardKap passed away from a heart attack late last night. Ab said to his knowledge that Kap didn't have any prior medical issues but did say the late DJ had diabetes.

Traxx also recalled the last time he spoke with Kap. "Last night when I talked to him, he was fine. He was on the computer at 1 a.m. and then I got the phone call at 4 in the morning from the artist he stays with, Bank Boy Drop. He's an artist based out of Florida we was actually workin' on."

The hip-hop community has expressed their sadness throughout social media, with a few dedications included below.

One of the many legend-building moments for Kap, born Keith Carter, was perhaps a 1995 Summer Jam set in which the Notorious B.I.G. threw his water bottle at the DJ for repeatedly messing up. In an interview with The Fader, from Spring 2011, Kap recalled the performance (see below), saying, "I’m throwing the records and it’s like, alright, cool we’re going through it. But it’s so hot the heat is actually warping the records. The records is melting! So the records are warping right before me and it’s just like woooommp... So, I go to Big’s room, and I knock on the door. And then he opens the door laughing! And he got a bunch of girls in the room!"

"I’m bashful and I’m like, 'Yo, I’m sorry, I apologize for all that.' He was like, 'Man, I knew! I saw those records. I knew it was the sun and all that. But I couldn’t let them think that it was me out there messing up!'"

The occasion was indicative of Big's and Kap's comical relationship, with Big often playing jokes on the DJ. Watch the video of the Summer Jam performance below and read remembrances from Funk Flex, Peter Rosenberg, DJ Enuff and more.
