David Bowie Dead at 69, Hip-Hop Reacts

English pop and rock star David Bowie has died at the age of 69 after losing a battle with cancer. The news was confirmed early Monday morning (Jan. 11) on the artist's official Facebook page.

Bowie's career spanned over 40 years, with his 25th studio album, Blackstar, released on Jan. 8, which was the singer's birthday. A statement posted to his social media accounts reads, "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief." CNN confirms he passed away on Sunday (Jan.10).

Throughout Bowie's career, the artist repeatedly reinvented his music and image, pioneering the genres of glam rock, art rock, dance pop, punk and electronica. His ability to transcend and fuse genres made him a huge influence on today's modern hip-hop and R&B artists, many of whom took to social media to express their sadness at the singer's passing. While most offered simple messages and condolences, Kanye West penned a slightly longer note, writing on Twitter, "David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime." Lupe Fiasco meanwhile, remembered Bowie's acting career which included the cult-classic Labyrinth.

Bowie is survived by his wife, the model Iman (pictured above), his son Duncan Jones and daughter Alexandria.
