One thing you can’t deny about Waka Flocka Flame is that the man is serious about having fun. Last night’s packed out show at Webster Hall in New York City was a perfect example of that statement. Waka’s ‘The Turn Up Godz’ Tour with DJ Whoo Kid landed in NYC right as the world celebrated the unofficial weed holiday known simply as 4/20.

As apart of the show’s appeal, the BSM rapper kept his advertised promise by accepting and reviewing applications for his coveted, $50,000 a year blunt roller position. Before the 8 pm set time, Waka met with 125 eager applicants and surveyed their blunt rolling abilities.

But putting business aside, when it came time to have fun, the ‘Turn Up God’ did not disappoint.

The mixed millennial crowd was already engulfed in weed smoke when BSM members Azizi Gibson and Ben G took the stage separately as opening acts. Each bringing a signature style of zealous to their set. Gibson attacked his lyrics with gritty conviction while Ben G got jazzy with his dance-inducing hooks. Fans of BSM bounced along invitingly and even called out requests, a noble but futile effort considering the sold out show was at physical and decibel level capacity.

As the lights went low, the energy levels in the ballroom spiked and when DJ Whoo Kid ushered big homie Flocka on stage around 9 p.m., the place exploded. Rocking a tie-dye tee and swinging his dreads in every direction possible, Waka thrashed around on stage, threw water at the crowd and in between verses, made it clear what he was here for.

“Fuck the rap shit, I’m an entertainer!” Flame proclaimed to critics who’ve said he’s strayed from rap into EDM with his most recent tapes. Of course, Waka played his old Atlanta favorites like “No Hands and “Grove Street Party” only this time, with an EDM-singed baselines and beat drops from The Turn Up Godz Tour Mixtape.

One of the highlights of the night was Waka disappearing from the stage to hop on Webster Hall’s back bar where he proceeded to take shots and incite a mosh pit in the middle of the dance floor. As the set winded down, Waka noticed the array of blunts in the crowd and was reminded of his business endeavor. “I’m really looking for a fucking blunt roller for real,” Flocka repeated. “Somebody throw they blunt up here, let me see who can really roll.”

After a bunch of last minute applicants threw up their "submissions" Waka lit up and brought the three best contenders on stage. No word yet on who was chosen. The best thing about the show was that it felt more like a house party than a concert. Dodging elbows, sharing spliffs and laughing with Waka was all-apart of the fun. Though he’s a self-proclaimed "Turn Up God" Waka is really a fun-loving man of the people who just so happens to command concert halls with his presences.

“No matter what borough you’re from, we’re all Brick Squad in the building,” he said. Squad!Sidney Madden
