Today in Hip-Hop: Mobb Deep Drop ‘Murda Muzik’ Album

On this day, April 27, in hip-hop history...

1999: On April 27, 1999, Queensbridge duo Mobb Deep released their fourth studio album, Murda Muzik.

Featuring the gritty, East Coast sound that Havoc and Prodigy had become known for, Murda Muzik debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. The album garnered the duo's biggest hit, "Quiet Storm" and helped to solidify the Mobb's supremacy among East Coast rappers. "Quiet Storm" features some of the rawest rhymes P ever laid to wax.

"I put my lifetime in between the paper's lines/I'm the quiet storm nigga who fight rhyme/P, yeah, you heard of him, but I ain't concerned with them/Nigga, I pop more guns than you holding them," Prodigy raps on the timeless track, which eventually received an even more timeless remix. That's just the tip of the iceberg as far as bars go.

"Keeping it raw," the extensive 19-track LP was primarily produced by Havoc and featured guest vocals from other notable New York MCs like Lil Kim, Raekwon, Nas and Lil Cease. With its convincingly menacing lyrics, ominous soundscape and top tier features, Murda Muzik is pretty much the peak of mid-1990s East Coast rap and Mobb Deep as a duo. It doesn't really get more N-Y than this.

Moving more than one million copies to date and being certified platinum by RIAA, Murda Muzik is the infamous pairing's most commercially successful LP. Salute to the Mobb, forever.
