Chance The Rapper, Acid Rap

Release Date: April 30, 2013
Notable Songs: "Cocoa Butter Kisses," "Juice," "Favorite Song," "Lost"
Why It's Dope: What can you say about Acid Rap that hasn't already been said? The project was stellar all the way through, stocked full of energy, wit, musicality, textures and guest spots that served to accent particular songs and add value to the project as a whole. Notable songs is an almost laughable category when every track is a standout in its own way. Not only did Acid Rap announce Chance The Rapper as one of the most innovative artists of his generation, but it also introduced the wider world to Vic Mensa, Saba, Nate Fox and NoName Gypsy, all of whom are making noise (Vic in particular) in their own realm by now.

Tapping a skilled artist or graphic designer is a route many rappers are taking these days to create the most appealing visual for their album covers. Although the tactic is nothing new, there's been a recent resurgence in cartoon-like, illustrated cover art. Just today (March 24), Action Bronson and Big Pooh both released new projects, Mr. Wonderful and Words Paint Pictures with illustrated imagery as the symbols for their music.

Some cover art illustrations have a beautiful, dream-like emphasis. Some are goofy drawings showing a picture of someone of something that couldn't be made with just a photo. Either way, these cartoon album covers set the tone of the music that unfolds between the hinge of the CD case. It's quite literally art complementing art.

Check out some of the most recent illustrated cover art the rap world has released.
