Five-Time Grammy Winner Michael McDonald Says Kanye West Doesn’t Make Valid Music

Five-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald has a few choice words for Kanye West of his own.

McDonald, known for his work with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers, recently went in on Kanye during an interview on The Dan Le Batard Show. McDonald's rant was in response to Yeezy's stage bomb at the 2015 Grammys and 'Ye's comments about Beck handing his Grammy for Best Album over to Beyoncé. The singer/songwriter also managed to attack Kanye's own artistry in the process.

"It's pretty obvious what Kanye's problem is. I think when Kanye gets to a point where he can actually put a couple of notes together either vocally or two bars of valid music playing an instrument, then he might have a right to criticize somebody else. Until then I think he's just talking to hear the sound of his own voice."

McDonald's comments are pretty brutal, as he questions Yeezy's ability to release exceptional music. Over the last decade, Kanye West has proven himself to be a dope artist, from his early The College Dropout days, to his risqué approach at hip-hop on Yeezus. Although he's been criticized for his rants that may or may not have been necessary, that doesn't take away from Kanye's own abilities as a rapper/producer.

As McDonald continues, he goes on to call Kanye West's rants "boring" and "childish," and questions Ye's methods of making music.

"The whole kinda cut-and-paste thing is a certain kind of artform all by itself. I don't know if I call it songwriting from a musician's standpoint. ... Beck is obviously a consummate musician. He plays instruments, many instruments. He can make his own record without having a fleet of computer operators onboard." 

In addition to seven amazing albums, Yeezy has also managed to secure 21 Grammys for his contribution to music, whether or not he used traditional instruments on his records. Listen to the full podcast here.

Other artists have spoken out against Kanye's comments, including Paul Stanley from Kiss and Garbage's Shirley Manson, both agreeing that Kanye is the problem.

'Ye's since clarified his comments to E! after the Grammy's where 'Ye seemingly questioned Beck's artistry. While speaking with paparazzi, Yeezy stated that his frustration was not with Beck, but rather the Grammy Awards as a whole for disrespecting Beyoncé. Beck even admitted that he thought Beyoncé was going to win over his Morning Phase too, so it makes you wonder why so many other people are mad at Yeezy. What are your thoughts?
