Fetty Wap Calls Kanye West’s Co-Sign Life-Changing
On Thursday Feb. 12, Roc Nation put on its very first outdoor concert in New York City, hosted by Kevin Durant and Kanye West, called the Roc City Classic. Thousands of fans crowded the streets of the Flatiron District in Manhattan to get a chance to watch 'Ye and company perform their long list of hits.
One of the big surprises of the night was the New Jersey native Fetty Wap, who performed his hit single "Trap Queen" for the thousands in attendance. While performing his smash hit alongside Yeezy, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper co-signed Fetty's song by saying it was his favorite record at the moment. With the approval of Kanye—and Rihanna before him—"Trap Queen" has gained even more momentum and now and has put the spotlight on Fetty Wap as one of the game's new artists to look out for.
XXL recently caught up with Fetty Wap at the Smooth Magazine launch to find out how his performance at Roc City came about and the new music he's been working on. —Roger Krastz
XXL: How was that experience of performing “Trap Queen” alongside Kanye West at the Roc City show last week?
Fetty Wap: It was a life-changing experience. Like, to come from nothing and to have somebody like Kanye that barely likes anybody to bring you out welcomingly, and he was out there rocking with me and singing along with me, it just feels like I can touch the sky.
How did you find out you were going to perform at the show?
It was like a surprise. They surprised me. I was told they were going to bring me to the concert. Next thing I know I’m backstage getting dressed, and I'm like, "Oh shit, hold up. What’s going on?" He actually gave me a pair of Yeezy Boost sneakers as well, from Yeezy. [Laughs] He told me to keep my head up and good luck with my career. It was an incredible night for me that I will never forget.
So anything in the works with Kanye that we should expect?
Oh man, I would definitely love to work with Kanye on something. But it really is all up to him, so whatever he wants to do I'm with it.
Out of all the “Trap Queen” remixes, which one is your favorite?
My favorite so far has to be Yo Gotti and Quavo from Migos. I was actually in Atlanta at the Quality Control studios with Quavo when he did the remix, but we've been working on something else with Quavo. He threw me on a song and I'm just waiting on him to drop it any minute now.
I know you're still riding the success of “Trap Queen,” but when should fans expect new music from you?
I have a couple of things in the pot already that people should be on the lookout for. I'm just really waiting for the music to get cooked the right way and once it's cooked I'm going to serve that meal that everybody's been waiting for.
