This past summer the hip-hop world fell in love with 20-year-old Brooklyn sensation Bobby Shmurda. The fresh-faced MC from Flatbush, Brooklyn whose song "Hot Nigga" came out of nowhere to storm the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10. Everything about the track became infectious, from its instantly-recognizable production by Jahlil Beats (lifted from Lloyd Banks' "Jackpot") down to its trademark Shmoney Dance, which even Queen Bey couldn't resist. After a quick bidding war, Shmurda was snapped up by Epic Records, graced The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and shared stages with the likes of Meek Mill, Raekwon and Drake. As the song climbed the chart, Shmurda climbed hip-hop's ladder in mere months.

But to say it all seemed so assured that Shmurda was a star would be to gloss over history. There was a very real feeling going around that the industry had been duped again by a rapper with a hot song and a limited potential; names like Trinidad Jame$ and Kreayshawn were tossed around as fans waited to see if Shmurda could catch another banger. What he and his GS9 crew caught instead was a state indictment that pinned Bobby, Rowdy Rebel and 13 of their associates with 69 charges ranging from gun possession to conspiracy to second degree murder.

The full indictment that rolled out the following day was damning, showing that the police had been tapping jail phone calls to infiltrate the crew's alleged drug dealing operation as far back as July 2013, well before Shmurda or GS9 were on the mind of every industry exec in the business. By Dec. 18, just six months after "Hot Nigga" truly took off, the young rapper was being held on $2 million bail and being offered up by NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton as an example of what happens when you cross his department.

Shmurda and GS9 have been held in various jails around the city since that day in December awaiting their first hearing on Jan. 29 in a Manhattan court house. (Shmurda and Rebel are both currently in the Manhattan Detention Complex, aka The Tombs, in Lower Manhattan; others have been detained at various facilities on Rikers Island.) The hearing included a new indictment which tacked on 32 additional charges for the crew, most of which stemmed from that Dec. 17 "takedown" that netted 10 additional weapons and three additional defendants, and set the next official court date for Apr. 22. Now, with all 101 counts brought by the State in the public record, XXL breaks down the myriad charges for each of GS9's defendants, the nine most damning allegations raised against the crew and what it all means going forward. —Dan Rys

The Defendants

Originally 15, now more than 20 members of GS9, who the police are now referring to as the G Stone 90s Crips, are under indictment, but only 16 have been listed by the NYPD. Here's a brief rundown of everyone involved, the charges they are facing and their current status. (Note: Some charges included multiple parties, accounting for individual counts adding up to more than the 101 collective charges from the State.) Twelve defendants pled not guilty at Jan. 29's court hearing. Photos are included where possible.

Gov't Name: Ackquille Pollard
Nickname: Bobby Shmurda or Chewy
Age: 20
8 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
2 counts of 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon
1 count of 2nd degree criminal drug paraphernalia use
1 count of criminal possession of a firearm
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: $2,000,000
Status: With his prior arrests for gun and drug possession, not to mention his status as the most high profile member of the crew, Shmurda has a lot on the line here. He filed bail paperwork that could see him out of jail this week—his bail hearing is set for Tuesday—after spending the past six weeks in The Tombs in Manhattan and, according to the Associated Press, could be looking at between 8 and 25 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The full indictment doesn't paint Shmurda as particularly violent—his charges reflect that he wasn't directly involved in some of the more serious crimes—but it does portray him as reckless, particularly with firearms.

But at the end of the day, it was his song and his repeated insistence that he rapped about his real life that caused the NYPD and Special Prosecutor to make such a big deal out of these arrests. The conspiracy charges are based on collective knowledge and planning, though not necessarily acting, to commit murder (2nd degree) and assault (4th degree) as well as weapons possession and drug dealing. His lyrics won't be used against him, but the wire taps mean that the prosecution might not need them, anyway.

Age: 23
10 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree attempted murder
1 count of 1st degree attempted assault
1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
2 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon)
1 count of 1st degree reckless endangerment
1 count of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: $2,000,000
Status: Rowdy Rebel, who was poised to be the second member of the clique to break out behind Bobby, maybe the most unfortunate one involved, depending on how you look at things. His name hardly comes up in the indictment—he skipped out on all of the drug charges as a result—but his alleged role as a driver in a drive-by shooting last July landed him his attempted murder, attempted assault and reckless endangerment charges. The indictment suggests that Rowdy wasn't really part of the drug operation, but it paints him with guns on him multiple times.

31 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree attempted murder
1 count of 1st degree attempted assault
1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
2 counts of 1st degree reckless endangerment
6 counts of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
13 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
2 counts of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of criminal use of a firearm
1 count of criminal possession of a firearm
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded (Held without bail)
Status: Cueno, the alleged shooter in Rowdy Rebel's drive-by incident, picked up all of the same charges as Rowdy from that day, but was also hit with use of a firearm. Outside of that one situation, the big number that stands out is the sheer number of times he's getting tagged for weapons possession. He was arrested at least twice for possession, with the first instance in June 2014 involving a shooting aimed at a rival Folk Nation gang member, which hit the victim three times. In the days following that incident, text messages and phone conversations were picked up from Cueno's phone which followed the subsequent attempts at retaliation from each gang and caught him posting a photo of a new gun, presumably to social media. All in all, many of the shootings involved either Cueno, Rasha or A-Rod in some combination.

2 counts of 1st degree reckless endangerment
3 counts of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
14 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of criminal use of a firearm
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded
Status: Rasha and A-Rod each got tagged with a second degree murder charge stemming from a shooting on Feb. 8, 2013, one of the earliest entries in the indictment. Rasha later allegedly shot A-Rod in the shoulder accidentally during a shooting on East 52nd Street in Brooklyn last July, suggesting that he was one of the main shooters in the alleged operation. Things look bleak here.

Gov't Name: Alex Crandon
Nickname: A-Rod
Age: 20
23 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree murder
5 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder
1 count of 1st degree assault
2 counts of 2nd degree assault
1 count of 1st degree attempted assault
1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
1 count of 1st degree reckless endangerment
1 count of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
6 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of criminal use of a firearm
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded
Status: In addition to the murder charge from February 2013, A-Rod was shot allegedly accidentally by Rasha last July in a shoot-out in Brooklyn in which a woman was hit in the neck and back, after which he suspected that the cops were keeping an eye on him. He's also a central figure in the account of a shooting in Miami in October, suggesting that Shmurda's uncles in town could be a weapons connect and then reporting to Slice what had happened, though it's not entirely clear if he was there.

Gov't Name: Brian Harvey
Nickname: Meeshie
Age: 24
15 Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder
1 count of 1st degree assault
2 counts of 2nd degree assault
1 count of 1st degree attempted assault
1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
2 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon)
1 count of 1st degree reckless endangerment
1 count of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
4 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded
Status: "Free Meeshie, ho" became one of the more memorable lines from "Hot Nigga," and Meeshie certainly picked up enough charges to need people to be rapping that one in the streets again. As the alleged driver of the car in the July 12, 2014 shooting that left a woman with bullets in her neck and back and A-Rod with a bullet in his shoulder, he's linked to those charges as well, and in the indictment mentions at one point in early June that Shmurda's fame was picking up to the point that no one in GS9 was willing to tell him what to do anymore.

2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
2 counts of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of 2nd degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia
1 count of criminal possession of a firearm
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded
Status: Monty was the one arrested along with Shmurda in his June 2014 arrest where Shmurda was tagged with weapons possession. Monty caught the same charge, but also was found with drugs and paraphernalia on him at the same time. In a phone call the following day, according to the indictment, Slice told A-Rod that after Monty got locked up there was no one left dealing on the street, while further phone conversations had other GS9 members gathering bail money for both of them.

Gov't Name: Javase Pollard
Nickname: Fame
Age: 22
4 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: $100,000
Status: Shmurda's older brother who, if going by the "Hot Nigga" lyrics is any indication, taught Bobby to sell crack by the fifth grade. His name comes up from time to time throughout the indictment as either someone possessing a gun or present at a shootout, though he seems to lack a truly violent streak, holding back when getting fired upon by rival gang members in an incident that left other members upset that he didn't retaliate, according to the indictment. But maybe the most glaring situation for Fame happened in the first few days of June when, during an altercation of some sort with his younger brother Bobby, his brother allegedly shot in Fame's direction, taking out a barbershop window in the process.

Gov't Name: Deshain Cockett
Nickname: Mitch or D-Boy or Larry Bird
Age: 23
17 Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder
1 count of 1st degree assault
2 counts of 2nd degree assault
1 count of 1st degree attempted assault
1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
1 count of 1st degree reckless endangerment
1 count of 2nd degree reckless endangerment
4 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
1 count of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: Remanded
Status: If there was any line that rung out more from Shmurda's inescapable hit it was the long, drawn-out, "Mitch caught a body 'bout a week agooooooo!" And with two attempted murder charges now tied to his name, the believability of the song's lyrics, unfortunately, grows. Mitch was allegedly in the car during the July 12 shooting in Brooklyn as well and shows up in telephone conversations from time to time throughout the indictment.

1 count of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: $350,000
Status: Rowdy Rebel's younger brother, like Rowdy himself, escaped the drug charges and is rarely named in the indictment. But the first time that he is tied him into a few additional charges after he posted an Instagram in October that allegedly showed him with an automatic weapon. Then everything was compounded on Oct. 27 when he and Cueno were alleged to have fired shots outside the Social Butterfly nightclub on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Cueno was later busted with the .380, which reportedly belonged to Meeshie, and was arrested for the shooting.

4 Charges: 1 count of 2nd degree conspiracy (2nd degree murder)
3 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (1st degree assault, 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
Plea: Not guilty
Bail: $250,000
Status: He may have only caught four charges—they're four big charges, though—but Slice was the lynchpin that put this whole case together for the State. The early phone conversations from July 2013 originate from a conversation between Slice and Shmurda, and Slice's phone calls show up again and again and again throughout the indictment, with most of the criminal activity being linked through his conversations. Without Slice's phone calls, the conspiracy charges probably fall apart for everyone.

Gov't Name: Delroy Edwards
Nickname: D-Rose
Age: Unknown
3 Charges: 2 counts of 4th degree conspiracy (2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree sale of a controlled substance)
1 count of 3rd degree criminal sale of a controlled substance
Plea: N/A
Bail: N/A
Status: This one is a mystery; the police never released an address or birth date for him, nor is he listed as a detainee in the NYC department of corrections. Nonetheless, he's got two counts of 4th degree conspiracy, one for conspiracy to sell drugs and one for conspiracy to possess a weapon, skipping out on the murder and assault charges. He's only mentioned twice in the 63-page indictment: after Shmurda was arrested Dec. 8, 2013 for cocaine possession, A-Rod allegedly told Meeshie in a phone call that it was D-Rose who left crack in the car, not Bobby; the second time he got caught selling crack this past September and gave police a fake name, which is recounted via phone conversations.

Gov't Name: Clevon Pearson
Nickname: Dread
Age: 23
3 Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon
1 count of 4th degree conspiracy (2nd degree criminal possession of a weapon)
Plea: N/A; Next hearing Feb. 4
Bail: Remanded
Status: Dread also had relatively few charges, getting locked up on gun possession twice but escaping the drug, murder and assault conspiracy charges.

The Major Alleged Crimes

The State's 101-charge indictment includes details on more than 15 different incidents over the course of a two-year period that included undercover drug sales, multiple weapons possession arrests and a particularly violent week-long period in June in which multiple shootouts are alleged to have occurred between GS9 and rival gang Folk Nation. Many are supported by the State's collection of jail phone call recordings, and a select few were discussed during bail arguments.

XXL has recounted the details of nine of the major crimes the State is alleging against the defendants. A separate overview, including details on GS9's operation and the lingo that they used, can be found here.

Feb. 8, 2013
Charges: 2nd degree murder, 3 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder, 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
Defendants Involved: Rasha, A-Rod
One of the earliest incidents in the indictment resulted in the most serious charges for the two defendants involved. The State claims to have video evidence of A-Rod and Rasha in the lobby of Rasha's building on the night of Feb. 8, 2013—the beginning of a two-day blizzard that hit NYC—with separate NYPD video of the two walking towards a bodega on Clarkson Avenue in Brooklyn. According to the State, Rasha fired through the glass door of the bodega while A-Rod stood outside as a lookout; the former then walked in and fired several shots at multiple people in the back of the bodega, allegedly members of rival gang BMW (Brooklyn's Most Wanted). A 19-year-old was killed during the shooting, leading to murder and attempted murder charges for both GS9 members.

Lawyers for both Rasha and A-Rod disputed the video evidence at Jan. 29's hearing. They both call the bodega video identification inconclusive, while A-Rod's attorney in particular pointed out that his client is never holding weapons in the surveillance video at Rasha's apartment, nor are there any weapons present. Both are being held without bail until their next hearing on Apr. 22.

June 2, 2014
Charges: 2nd degree reckless endangerment
Defendants Involved: Bobby Shmurda, Fame
This was one of the more eye-opening incidents included in the indictment, alleging that Bobby Shmurda, during an argument with his brother Fame, shot multiple rounds in the direction of his brother and wound up shattering the glass of a Clarkson Avenue barbershop in the middle of the day. No one was injured, but days later, the indictment states, Meeshie and Slice spoke about the incident on the phone, with Slice questioning why Shmurda was shooting at other members of the gang, whether he intended to hit Fame or not. At this point, with "Hot Nigga" beginning to take off on the Internet, Meeshie responded that Shmurda's status in the hip-hop world was picking up steam to the point where no one else in GS9 would check him, allegedly saying, "They don't wanna tell Chewy nothing cuz they scared and shit."

June 3, 2014
Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree weapons possession, criminal use of drug paraphernalia
Defendants Involved: Bobby Shmurda, Flea Montana
Not a major incident, but one that was reported at the time and has cropped up again in recent weeks. As interest in Shmurda kept growing, TMZ unearthed court documents at the end of August that indicated that Shmurda had been arrested for gun possession in June after being found showing off a loaded 9mm in a Brooklyn apartment and trying to hide it in a couch. The indictment gives more detail on the arrest, saying Shmurda and Flea Montana were arrested with two guns and crack on them, while phone recordings in the days after apparently indicate that the two were in a trap house at the time and that after their arrest no one was left to push drugs.

Lawyers made clear in court on Jan. 29 that they do not consider third party conversations, such as the ones recorded by the State, to be direct evidence against their clients, particularly without any physical evidence. This charge was the count that was reported to have been dropped in Brooklyn ahead of the initial hearing, but was instead dropped in Brooklyn so that it could be used in the Manhattan-based indictment.

July 12, 2014
Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree attempted murder, 1st degree assault, 3 counts of 2nd degree assault, 1st degree attempted assault, 1st degree reckless endangerment, 4 counts of 2nd degree reckless endangerment, 2nd degree criminal weapons possession, 1st degree criminal use of a firearm
Defendants Involved: A-Rod, Rasha, Meeshie, Mitch
One of the boldest incidents included in the indictment by far, which resulted in many of the more serious charges. According to the State, Meeshie was driving a car in Brooklyn that included Mitch, A-Rod and Rasha when they spotted a rival gang member on the street; Rasha and A-Rod then jumped out of the car and began running after their target while shooting down the street. In the process, a 22-year-old Brooklyn woman sitting in a lawn chair was shot in the neck and the back, while A-Rod stepped into Rasha's line of fire and was hit in the shoulder. The State also claims that the incident was caught on video and that A-Rod lied to police when he got to the hospital, while phone calls indicate that Meeshie hid both guns in his house after the shooting.

Lawyers again disputed the veracity of the video and stressed the lack of evidence; all four are being held without bail until the Apr. 22 hearing.

July 27, 2014
Charges: 2nd degree attempted murder, 1st degree attempted assault, 1st degree reckless endangerment, 2nd degree reckless endangerment, 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession, 1st degree criminal use of a firearm
Defendants Involved: Rowdy Rebel, Cueno
Just hours before the EBC America Celebrity Championship at Barclays Center, where GS9 (minus Bobby Shmurda) joined Fabolous to perform “Hot Nigga” on the court (French Montana, Wale and Kendrick Lamar were also in attendance at the event), the State alleges that Rowdy Rebel was driving a car through Boerum Hill with Cueno when they spotted a member of Folk Nation. According to the indictment, Rowdy Rebel allegedly called out to the members while Cueno jumped out of the car and began shooting.

But that's not how the defense saw the matter. In strenuously argued bail hearings on Jan. 29, Rowdy's lawyer said that the State's video of the incident showed a car but didn't show the driver, thus invalidating the State's claim that they were able to identify him by the clothing he wore at the Barclays Center hours later; his attorney added that there was "virtually no evidence" to place Rowdy at the scene of the shooting. Similarly, though the State alleged that Cueno was wearing a brightly colored "costume" in video of the shooting, which his lawyer disputed as well. Cueno was identified by prosecutors as the "principal figure in most of these shootings."

Aug. 25, 2014
Charges: 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
Defendants Involved: Rowdy Rebel, Cueno
A month later, police found the weapon used in the July 27 shooting inside a room registered to Rowdy Rebel at the Millennium Hotel in Manhattan; the State in hearings on Jan. 29 indicated that Rebel ran from the hotel, asking the driver of a car nearby to drive him out of there in exchange for $500. Defense argued that while there was video of Rebel entering the hotel room, there was no video evidence of him with the gun at any point.

Oct. 11, 2014
Charges: 1st degree attempted assault, 2 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession, 1st degree reckless endangerment, 2nd degree reckless endangerment
Defendants Involved: Rasha, Cueno, Binish Mahmoud
In Miami, outside South Beach's Fat Tuesdays nightclub, the State alleged that video footage showed Rasha firing into a crowd of people out of Mahmoud's car, while shells recovered from the car linked Cueno as well. Mahmoud's lawyer said that video that allegedly showed her in the car was inconclusive, while Rasha's indicated that there was no physical evidence linking his client to the crime. Phone conversations within the indictment appear to state that Rasha was the "point guard" of the incident, though none of the defendants that were there were on any of those calls in particular.

Oct. 27, 2014
Charges: 1st degree reckless endangerment, 2 counts of 2nd degree reckless endangerment, 4 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession
Defendants Involved: Cueno, Fetti
Another nightclub shooting, this one outside the Social Butterfly club on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. According to the State, both Fetti and Cueno had posted on social media earlier in the day showing the two of them together in what prosecutors called matching "uniforms," namely blue sweatsuits. The State alleged that Cueno attempted twice to enter the Social Butterfly to attack a rival gang member but was kicked out both times before firing into the crowd. The State alleged that Cueno and Fetti were in a car that then pulled a U-Turn and took off, with Fetti as the driver and video linking their outfits to the social media posts.

However, Fetti's lawyer reviewed video footage and, in addition to claiming that the video evidence cannot identify the shooter, indicated that the person the State was identifying as Fetti got into the back seat of the car, rather than the driver's side or the front of the vehicle. And as for the "uniforms" posted on social media, the defense argued that they were less uniforms and more regular attire common for kids that age. Fetti's lawyer argued that since there was "virtually no evidence" linking him to the crime his bail should be reduced, an argument the judge denied until Apr. 22.

Dec. 17, 2014
Charges: 20 counts of 2nd degree criminal weapons possession, 3 counts of 3rd degree criminal weapons possession, 2 counts of criminal possession of a firearm
Defendants Involved: Mitch, Fetti, Rowdy Rebel, Dread, A-Rod, Bobby Shmurda, Flea Montana, Aja Davis, Michael Legall
These charges stem from the "Takedown" that the NYPD executed at Quad Studios on Dec. 17, when they arrested eight GS9 members in and around the Manhattan recording studio, another five around the city and indicted a further two who were already in custody, recovering 10 guns in the process. The State arrested Rowdy Rebel near the building's stairwell and found Cueno hiding underneath the stairs wearing a ski mask, as well as a bag containing three guns and a receipt with Rowdy's name on it; Shmurda, Flea Montana, Aja Davis and Michael Legall were arrested in a car outside the studio with two guns in the vehicle.

Davis and Legall were not included in the initial indictment, though both were added in the second indictment filed Jan. 29. Rowdy Rebel's attorney attempted to distance his client from the bag found in the stairwell; though video showed Rowdy entering the studio carrying the bag, Rowdy was not with the bag when it was found, suggesting that guns could have been tossed into it in the interim. As for the four defendants in the car, one gun was found tucked into the seat between Shmurda and Flea, with the other in a bag laying across Shmurda and Davis' laps. All four were charged with possession of both guns.

All told, 26 of the additional 32 charges were related to the "Takedown," either linked with the Quad Studios raid or with the other arrests around Queens and Brooklyn.
