Hip-hop had a bad year when it came to album sales as no projects went platinum in 2014, but when it comes to streaming services, hip-hop reigns supreme. While hip-hop and R&B music made up just 14 percent of total album sales in 2014, the genre accounted for 29 percent of all streaming consumption in the year, according to Nielsen. The numbers include totals from streaming services like the OL, Beats Music, Cricket, Google Play, Medianet, RDio, Rhapsody, Slacker, Spotify, Xbox Music, YouTube and Vevo.

J. Cole's successful 2014 Forest Hills Drive project showed just how powerful hip-hop music is when it comes to streaming. The album broke Spotify's one week streaming record when it was streamed 15.7 million times in December.
