Nipsey Hu$$le Thinks YG’s ‘My Krazy Life’ Was The Best Album Of 2014

After the Grammy nominations were released last Friday (Dec. 5), one album that many fans thought would be on the list for the Best Rap Album category was missing: YG's My Krazy Life. YG's debut LP is regarded by many as a contender for album of the year—though not, apparently, by The Grammys—and he voiced his displeasure the following morning by dropping "YG Flow 2015." My Krazy Life scored great reviews across the board from most music magazines and blogs, plus had huge support from YG's peers. One fellow MC in particular is Nipsey Hu$$le. "YG won the street Grammy," Nipsey told XXL over the phone this weekend. "My Krazy Life won the street Grammy. That's stamped."

The album boasted—with production handled primarly by DJ Mustard—four big singles: "My Nigga" featuring Jeezy and Rich Homie Quan; "Left, Right"; "Who Do You Love?" featuring Drake and "Do It To Ya" featuring TeeFLii. "My Nigga" reached No. 19 on the Hot 100 chart and is certified Platinum. However, this isn't the first (or last) time a rap album was snubbed by the Grammy Committee. There's a plethora of hip-hop classics that weren't nominated or lost to underqualified candidates. "Illmatic didn’t win a Grammy and that's stamped," continued Nipsey. "They represented the truth on the highest level. That’s what I respect about My Krazy Life. That’s really some L.A., Compton, Watts, Long Beach, young nigga life story. It represented it right. Mustard being the hitmaker that he's become; really being a nigga for L.A. and being from the same environment like YG and myself. "

The nominations for Best Rap Album for the 57th Grammy Awards were Iggy Azalea's The New Classic, Childish Gambino's Because The Internet, Common's Nobody Smiling, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron and Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood. But for the Crenshaw artist who's gearing up to release his new project Mailbox Money this month, none of the nominations were the best rap album of 2014. "Looking at the Best Rap Album nominations, you know, the Grammys don't speak for our culture," added Nip. "It's cool, next level commercial acceptance, but they ain't never represented hip-hop. Niggas been getting robbed at the Grammys. As far as the streets, as far as the culture, as far the people, as far as L.A., the rest of the country and the world, My Krazy Life was a success and the best rap album of 2014. Generally, consensus was YG. We judge by our peers and that’s the fact of reality. That's the fact of life.
