Catch Lauryn Hill’s voice filling the big screen in her narration role for Concerning Violence—a documentary exploring Frantz Fanon’s seminal anti-colonial text The Wretched of the Earth. Director Göran Hugo Olsson dished on securing Hill’s vocals for his piece to Dazed Magazine.

“I knew through mutual friends that she was a huge reader of Fanon, so I wrote a paper letter and manuscript with images while she was in prison for tax problems,” he revealed. “She replied immediately and said it’s too strange, I’m here in prison and I’m reading that book now.”

Hill immediately agreed to do the voice-over and music, but due to her time spent imprisoned, she was only able to hit the studio to fulfill her narration duties. Concerning Violence has successfully completed a festival circuit run and is set to open Dec. 5 at the IFC Film Center in New York.
