Rap’s most famous '90s female duo is back to give a new, funny meaning to “Push It”.

Dressed in their classic gold chains and oversized varsity jackets, Salt-n-Pepa have replicated the dance moves and funky stage presence of their 1987 hit single, “Push It” for a new GEICO insurance commercial. The duo’s resident DJ, Spinderella, got in on the fun too as she also made a quick cameo during the thirty-second jaunt.

Originally, the raunchy lyrics from the song insinuated sex; a topic that was a tumultuous taboo for female artists back in the day. But now, as the ladies sing the breathy chorus in the clip, there’s a much different connotation to the words than what you might think.

They’re repeating, “Push It” to guide and motivate people doing everyday tasks like opening a door or pressing an elevator button. In an amazing example of music marketing, there’s even a scene when they whisper, “oh baby, baby” to a couple during a lamaze class.

“Push It” became a female dance anthem at its height and its critical success is considered a huge feat for the female rap game. The single peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988 and is considered one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone.

The clip ends with an announcer explaining, “If you’re Salt-n-Pepa, you tell people to 'push it.' It's what you do." Then sliding in the business slogan, he says, “If you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to GEICO. It's what you do.”

Makes sense.
