Last night at an intimate gathering at Chung King Studios in midtown Manhattan, DJ Premier, Royce Da 5'9" and Adrian Younge unveiled their PRhyme project in a performance for Boiler Room TV. The group was announced in September, with Royce handling MC duties and Primo behind the boards, crafting a nine-track LP using only samples from Younge's extensive catalog of soul-funk-jazz records. "Everything is based on the Golden Age," said Younge as he stepped behind the boards for his opening DJ set. The Golden Age, he explained, was in the sweet spot between 1968 and 1973, and his set consisted mostly of breaks and samples from that era, though he dipped outside it as well. Everything from Johnny Mathis' "No Love (But Your Love)" to The Shangri-Las' "He Cried" came out, as well as a couple old samples that were recognizable by sound but not by name.

Then Premier and Royce took over, setting up in the middle of the studio space and ripping through a blistering 20-minute set of their new material, kicking off with title track "PRhyme." "We look at it like we're channelling the Golden Era," Royce told the 30 or so people in attendance, saying that the Golden Era was within Preem's hands. "U Looz" and "Courtesy" both stuck out, two tracks that had been released previously, before the duo ended on a throwback Royce track, "Boom," to finish out the evening.

Check the photos above, and keep an eye out for the PRhyme album dropping this December.
