Remy Ma gave a show stopping performance Saturday night (Oct. 4) at the Five-Percent Nation’s Conscious Concert. The New York MC caught fans off guard when she made a guest appearance during her husband Papoose’s set at the NOGE’s 50th anniversary celebration held at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. After Pap gave a touching speech on how he held down the “Hot Bitch (Hot Nigga Remix)” rapper during her six years behind bars, Remy ripped the stage performing her classic “Whatever.”

Not to be overshadowed, Brand Nubian got the crowd rocking with old school hits such as “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down,” “Slow Down” and “Wake Up.” But nothing brought the crowd to their feet like their performance of “One For All.”

The absence of Rakim could not stop the Five-Percent Nation from throwing an all out party. Scheduled host Erykah Badu got in on the action when she performed her 1996 hit “On & On.” After performing “Love Of my Life,” the singer spit “mathematics” when she performed a new song inspired by a documentary she saw. The crowd of Gods and Earths joined in as Badu encouraged them to not give up on spreading their knowledge and wisdom.

Big Daddy Kane continued to promote the crusade when he hit the stage. Before performing, Kane paid tribute to the mentor who introduced him to the organization. The MC urged the audience to do what is needed to continue to “build” the community and the youth. During his performance, he surprised fans by bringing out Busta Rhymes, who performed “Look At Me Now” and “Where My Eyes Can See.” His animated rhymes “warmed up” the crowd just in time for Kane to reemerge on the stage with his dancers to bust in to their routine that included his classic split.

Other special guests and performers included Kay Slay, Sha Rock, Roxanne Shanté, Salt-N-Pepa’s original Spinderella, Freedom Williams, Peter Gunz, Tragedy Khadafi and Capone-N-Noreaga. –Chris Garner
