‘Meow The Jewels’ Kickstarter Campaign Raises Over $10,000

For those who aren't familiar with the feline based campaign, a die-hard Run The Jewels fan started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to purchase Killer Mike and El-P's $40,000 Meow The Jewels package. The Meow The Jewels package would include a remixed version of their new album Run The Jewels 2, primarily featuring cat noises. Well, cat lovers around the world united to bring the campaign's current total of $10, 511 as of Sunday, with 622 total backers. With 35 days left to go (as of Sept. 22) there’s a real chance that this can actually happen. El-P confirmed that he will make Meow The Jewels a reality if the Kickstarter can raise a total of $45,100 is met. And all the proceeds will go to charity.

While the album packages listed a not so promising disclaimer about the group reserving the right to take money from fans and not fulfill any of its obligations as outlined in any package priced at 35k or more, El-P and Killer Mike were still surprised by the success of the Kickstarter campaign, according to a recent Noisey interview.

El-P: "[When incidents like this happen,] everyone gets really, really into it for maybe a week, and then it kind of just gets brushed away, but some things you can't just brush away." El-P told Noisey. "If you're given the sacrosanct honor of being one of the few people in this society who are allowed to legally take somebody's life, then you have to be held to a standard that is so far above the average citizen's standard that it's almost impossible to achieve with any type of leeway."

Killer Mike: "I can't believe those crazy fucking bastards are doing it. If they actually pull it off, we're going to actually do it. I'm overwhelmed by it. On one front, it's wild and silly. On another front, it shows the power of independence."

Run The Jewels 2 is expected for release in late October.
