Soulja Boy has become something between a spirit guide and a funhouse mirror for the weirdest rap from the South and/or the Bay Area; his latest offering, "Cake," continues in this vein. Echoing both the staccato triplets and comically slurred speech of his Atlanta contemporaries, he flits between flows and buys the wettest jewelry imaginable. As with Soulja Boy's best work since the start of the decade, it's halfway between self expression and genre study, toying with styles while he circles his messaging. Speaking of his Atlanta contemporaries, Swag the Mixtape, from which Cake is pulled, will be released through Rich Gang, the Cash Money imprint to which he has been loosely tied for some time.
