Rapper Lil Nas X’s Country-Trap Song “Old Town Road” Sets Billboard Record
Newly-signed Columbia Records artist Lil Nas X is already making Billboard history.
His single "Old Town Road," which is described as country trap song, has officially become the first song to ever simultaneously occupy space on the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country and Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs charts.
The success of the teen's track about the cowboy lifestyle comes somewhat in part to its TikTok video challenge, the #YeeHawChallenge, which helped to launch it at No. 83 on the Hot 100 chart. To date, it's generated over 25 million streams on Spotify, and as of Friday (March 22), it sits at No. 51 on the Hot 100. While it has fallen off the Hot Country Songs chart as of press time, "Old Town Road" debuted there at No. 19 last week, and that was enough to set the triple threat record it now holds.
X, who officially announced his signing with Columbia Records with Billboard today , was raised just outside of Atlanta. The rapper self-released his debut project, Naserati, in 2018, with "Old Town Road" dropping in early December. The song samples Nine Inch Nails' 2008 track "34 Ghosts IV," and in addition to the previously mentioned Spotify streams it's amassed, the music video (which is just a mashup of footage from the Red Dead Redemption video game) is nearing the 10 million mark on YouTube.
