DJ Folk Rates Artists from XXLMag.com’s The Break

Three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), a new artist is featured on XXLMag.com's The Break. An ideal destination for fans, artists, and industry members, The Break showcases up and coming talent, giving a brief introduction on the artist or group, and highlighting some of their standout music. Each month, industry insiders will team with XXL to rate and comment on the submissions.

For the month of April, DJ Folk of Young Jeezy's Corporate Thugz Entertainment (CTE)—who will serve as one of three judges—checked out the section to see what yesterday's talent (Young Fame) had to offer. Check out his comments below.

Young Fame ft. Nipsey Hussle “Roof Back” (to see more from Young Fame, click here)

I have prior knowledge of Young Fame via his song with 2 Chainz. The Northwest has been kind of missing from the game, Sir Mix Alot has been probably the most notable name to come from the area. “Roof Back” featuring Nipsey Hu$$le is a standout track for him. It’s a cool little record, the hook is ok, it works for the vibe of the record. Nipsey floated on his verse real talk. He went off. It’s a gift and curse for Fame [however], he does him but at the same time you hear Nip on it and forget his verses. That’s the only bad thing about features you either step it up or get drowned out by the feature. “Make it Work” featuring 2 Chainz is pretty cool as well, nothing that hasn’t even been done before but Fame made it work.

“I’m A Star” is probably the record I liked the least, nothing really stood out. It’s laid back a little too [much]. While Fame lacks lyricism he definitely makes up for in grind and determination. I think to break out of being just a regional artist, [You have to say] things in a way that we never heard it before. He's from a place that’s been somewhat quiet on the nationwide scene, I think he could break out of the region [but it] just depends on if he can find that right record.
