Marley Marl, The Making Of “Eric B. Is President” [Video]

There is no argument that “Eric B. Is President” is one of the greatest recordings from hip hop’s golden era. Here, legendary (un-credited) producer Marley Marl takes Dubspot through the process of how he created the Eric B and Rakim classic in 1986.

Using a bassline from Fonda Rae’s “Over Like A Fat Rat” and recreating a sample from James Brown’s “Funky President,” Marl painstakingly concocted one of the most significant tracks in hip hop history. Oh yeah, he did all this using 1980’s technology and only a four-track recorder. “Limitations made us what we were,” he said. “We were making classic hip hop in the projects in the living room, no studio and a four track. So it’s not where you’re from, its where you’re at. Sometimes limitations are good.”

Take notes. It’s the real…hip hop.
