Any fans thinking that Lil Wayne’s passion for skateboarding is just a phase, should think again. Skateboarding is more than a hobby to the Young Money superstar…it’s a lifestyle, one that Weezy says has taken precedence over rapping.

“I picked up the skateboard and I thought it would be a hobby, but it’s a lifestyle,” Wayne recently said during an interview with DJ Drama in support of their upcoming Dedication 4 mixtape. “You have to be fully committed. In order to be fully committed, you have to live that lifestyle. What these young kids say right now—you have to be about that life. I guess I’m about that life.

“It’s kinda of putting rap on the backburner, that’s all,” he added about skateboarding. “Rap is a taking backseat to skating. I deserve that.”

With skateboarding still being very new to him, Weezy admits that he has been getting uninterested in slinging rhymes at times.

“Yeah, it does get pretty boring when it comes to just the rapping and all that type of stuff,” he told Drama. “I’ve done so much of it. I’ve been doing it since I was eight. I’m about to be 30 in September and I’m still rapping, so I kinda feel like I’m getting old.”

Weezy has gone as far to install a board slide and quarter pipe in the recording booth, so he can practice his tricks once his bars are laid. Through his partnership with Mountain Dew, DEWeezy, Wayne is developing a skate park in his hometown of New Orleans, asking fans to help out by sending in their concepts.

Wayne didn’t close out his interview with Drama without addressing B.G.’s situation. Earlier this month, B.G. was sentenced to 14 years in prison for gun possession and witness tampering. Wayne and B.G. were original members of Cash Money’s Hot Boys.

“It’s terrible, it’s unfortunate, but he’s a man…he’s a real man,” Wayne said of B.G. “He’s a solider. He’s been through things like that before, so if anybody can handle it, he can.”—Mark Lelinwalla
