Frank Ocean Comes Out As Bisexual, Odd Future, Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and More React

For the past few days, gossip and entertainment websites posted rumors about R&B crooner Frank Ocean having some lyrics on his upcoming album, Channel Orange, that expose he’s gay.

Late Tuesday night (July 3), Ocean—a collaborator of Jay-Z and Kanye West on their Watch the Throne album—took to his Tumblr account to come out as a bisexual.

The revelation came via a long Tmblr post, in which he explained that the first time he fell in love was with a man.

“Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too,” the singer from the Odd Future collective began explaining. “We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile.”

“Sleep I would often share with him,” he added. “By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with.”

He added: “I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore…I feel like a free man.”

To that, Ocean’s Odd Future crew and others in the hip-hop community saluted him.

“Fucking Finally Sus Boy @frank_ocean,” tweeted Odd Future frontman, Tyler, The Creator. “Hahahaha, You Still Aint Got No Bitches Hahaha My Nigga Dawg.

“My Big Brother Finally Fucking Did That,” he added. “Proud Of That Nigga Cause I Know That Shit Is Difficult Or Whatever. Anyway. Im A Toilet.”

Added fellow Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt: “Proud of frank.”

Others outside the Los Angeles collective, reacted to Ocean’s announcement as well.

“When I emailed Jay-Z my open letter to @frank_ocean he put it on his site in minutes,” tweeted journalist and co-author of Hov’s book, Decoded, Dream Hampton. “That’s love.”

“I commend Frank Ocean on his courage,” tweeted DJ Drama. “I support him & will continue to be a fan of his work.”

Hip-hop mogul and ambassador, Russell Simmons, applauded Frank for showing the courage to come out.

“I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean,” Simmons wrote on his GlobalGrind website. “Your decision to go public about your sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear. These types of secrets should not matter anymore, but we know they do, and because of that I decided to write this short statement of support for one of the greatest new artists we have.

“His gifts are undeniable. His talent, enormous. His bravery, incredible. His actions this morning will uplift our consciousness and allow us to become better people,” he added. “Every single one of us is born with peace and tranquility in our heart. Frank just found his. Frank, we thank you. We support you. We love you.”

Frank even got a legendary salute from Stevie Wonder.

“Stevie Wonder just sang no church in the wild to me at  this party,” Ocean himself tweeted in the wee hours of Thursday morning (July 5), referring to the hook that he sings on The Throne’s hit ‘No Church In The Wild. “Had to jot that down.”—Mark Lelinwalla

I think by posting this “news”, XXL is perpetuating that being bisexual is something that requires the scrutiny of the public. This is kind of fueling the fire for ignorant people against the LGBT community. Honest, if nobody made a fuss over the sexual orientation of people, the world would be a better place. Although this is a positive article, I give props to that @Louietrax

    • Wheel Chair Jimmy

unfortunately people do come out against homosexuality, aggressively in the hip hop community. u find me 5 albums in the top 20 that haven’t used the word faggot this year. shit, I use the word I do try to stop, but as enlightened as our society pretends to be we as a people are still against anything other than the nuclear family for the most part. so I do think its’ good to high light these issues. bt not for the “look at this faggot” people “more for other people to feel strong enough to come out”

      • TruthBeTold

just shut up. gay people automatically always think the word faggot applies to every gay person when in most cases it doesnt. a faggot is.. well.. a faggot. a fucking loser, but deffinately not in the context of a fruit. this exact thing happened to eminem an then he sang with elton, fuckin stupid how every asshole who wants to feel important finds something to take offense to. this was actually a good article xxl, ignore these FAGGOTS.

  • Harvey

Good on him. He just defined courage.

  • AciD

who fuckin cares, grow up xxl and post actual hip hop news, like frank oceans ass bein into dick and pussy effects hip hop, what the fuck is wrong with y’all god damn this shit is absurd!!!

    • Growup

Why don’t you grow up? This story is more than meets the eye. It shows that you shouldn’t be afraid of who you are and shouldn’t deny it. You are fuckin closed minded. It affects hip hop especially if you have a player like Russell Simmons commenting on the news.

      • Boi Stop

People growing up has nothing to do with being a butt packer. It’s wrong and against nature. 2 men cannot reproduce, and 2 men’s bodies were not made for each other, poking someone in the hole that discharges waste and feces is utterly digusting. I don’t care how yall try to play it, set it up and metronize it. It’s nasty young buck. You grow up and realize what’s really going on in the world. The world wants you to accept and expect the wrong. I’m not falling for it.

        • thizz

preach. & the most annoying part is homos always have to act like this. like its some big deal or headline. they have to announce to the world their sexuality. get real. he is sic in the head

        • defender

I guess it really takes balls to go against god these days. I cant judge this Sodomite for what he does and how he feels about his manhood. I felt that his belief system was suspect since I heard “We All Try” where he stated something about he doesn’t believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman but between love and love. The ideology in his music is no longer riveting, it is now sickening and it taints my perception of this once promising crooner. I guess that his bold move will make this type of bullshit the norm for future R&Bist. To @Growup Russell Simmons has been confused since before the days of Def Jam.

    • Brown Hornet

I feel you bro! Butt packers need to take a long dirt nap.

  • Hannya

I’ll wait for Frank to publicly admit to being bi or whatever.

  • CecilRhodez

Just because Frank Ocean comes out doesn’t mean I have to be cool with it. I always believe to each his own but honestly Im not going to listen to much of his music anymore for the simple fact that he’s an R&B singer. His emotions come from love and heartbreak and if you’re telling me those emotion that Im listening to are targeted towards a man, its just not something Im into. But I still commend him for coming out, bitterest truth is better than the sweetest lie.

  • fly kid all day erry day

You people need to lay off the guy. He still is a great artist and i praise him for having the courage to come out. I cant believe tyler didnt rip him apart though.

  • Noles506

Gays can’t produce life, sex is there to produce life to keep life going for everyone, how is sticking your dick in some mans ass helping the chain of life? It is disgusting. Soon enough people will be fucking dogs. That’s my personal view of it, but on the other side… why do gay people have to come out? It’s there own life, there own business… keep it that way. Why do Gays get days and parades? You dont see my girlfriend & I on parade floats saying LOOK AT ME… IM STRAIGHT!

  • sean

who is mysonne? i wouldn’t even know who this guy is if i didn’t read this, and I’m sure a lot of other people wouldn’t either. mysonne is getting publicity off of frank ocean, so he’s being hypocritical #realtalk. and the gay rumors started after he did a playing in london or something like that, so i think he felt compelled to say something about it. frank makes great music. mysonne got issues and should take it out on someone else besides frank.

  • Masonroselee

get it where you can get it. Its tough out here in these streets.

  • DNZL

    Two points.
First one: Who the fuck is Mysonne?? That’s right – Game’s weedcarrier. It’s bad enough to be a weedcarrier for anyone, yet alone someone as irrelevant as Game.
Second Point: The letter that Frank Ocean wrote was going to be the liner notes on his album. And he couldn’t help the way circumstances occurred. Rumours appeared after someone heard the album. Frank probably wanted to wait for the album to drop before he said anything. And why would he need the extra publicity? He already has the reputation of a very respected R&B singer. So how about Mysonne shuts the fuck up and crawl back into the obscurity he came from. Fuck your struggle nigga

  • lovelywun

Looks like somebody is throwing stone in a glass house….no one knows who u were until u went at Frank. Anyway, if u listen to all of Frank’s old songs, he has been telling us all along but we failed to receive the message so no he is not “fake” at all. You keep rapping about money and hoes and leave the real music up to Frank dickwad!

  • b =k

mysonne is a wack bum dude is like 45 still trying to get a buzz lol

  • murda

Who give a sh!t what Mysonne thinks about anyways? Why is this news?

  • fuckyall

i dont care what people do in there home but it piss me off that every form of media has to throw that gay shit in from movies to shows to music its fag overload lol

  • EdgarAllenBrok
