The Dream and Russell Simmons Defend Gwyneth Paltrow’s N-Word Tweet

Gwyneth Paltrow sparked a bit of a Twitter firestorm over the weekend with a controversial tweet posted from her account. On Friday (June 1), Paltrow tweeted “Ni**as in paris for real @mrteriusnash (the dream) tyty, beehigh” during Jay-Z and Kanye West’s stop in Paris for the Watch The Throne tour.

When several media outlets reported that “Gwyneth Paltrow Tweets the N-word,” she responded with Tweet “Hold up. It’s the title of the song!” Since then, both The Dream and Russell Simmons have responded, with The Dream coming to Paltrow’s defense the next day and taking responsibility for the tweet.

“Fyi Sorry for the Confu I typed Ni**as as in paris for real from Gwens Phone my bad I was Fked up please excuse it! We were lit!”

He followed up the next day with a series of tweets on the matter, stating: “Nigga doesn’t have any power over me which is why this will be the last thing I say about it. A word means something when you react to it. Context is everything. Meaning it in the context as a song which is how we sold it to the world!!! it is what it is. I’ve seen people not use the word at all and have been the most racist people rather than use it in the context as the song it self. And actually Niggaz was in Paris! Lol stop wasting gods time Do something with your life! Love not war.”

Def Jam Co-Founder Russell Simmons also touched on the issue in a blog post on Global Grind, writing: “For Gwyneth to tweet out her excitement about hip-hop taking over the planet is a good thing. She didn’t mean any harm, she was just trying to ball so hard, and like Jay-Z says, ‘motherfu*ckers can’t fine’ her.” —Neil Martinez – Belkin
