Brooklyn Residents Sign Petition to Rename Park in MCA’s Name

Residents of late Beastie Boys’ member, Adam “MCA” Yauch, want a New York City park renamed in honor of the fallen rapper. And Yauch’s hometown of Brooklyn is representing in a major way by signing a petition.

The petition, which recently went viral on Facebook, has the aim to change the name of the Squibb Park, in Brooklyn Heights, to Adam Yauch Park. The post stated that that park is in the process of being converted into a skateboarding facility and Brooklyn Bridge Park’s gateway.

MCA and the Beastie boys have had ties to the skateboarding community for a long time, being featured in many classic skate videos and having their own signature skateboard decks. In 1994, Yauch worked with director Spike Jonze, a former BMX rider and skateboarder, for the Beastie Boys’ music video, “Sabotage.”

Across from the park is Harry Chapin Playground, named after the rocker who, like Yauch, was also a native of Brooklyn Heights. Previously, reported about a mural that was painted in Brooklyn in tribute of MCA.

Yauch died on May 4 after a three-year bout with cancer. He became a vegan at the recommendations of his Tibetan doctors shortly after his diagnosis. Yauch’s death sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community with the likes of Eminem, Nas and Jay-Z all sending their messages of heartfelt condolences.

The Beasties went on to win multiple Grammys and became the third hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Yauch is survived by both his wife and daughter.—Christopher Minaya
