“So in a couple years baby I’mma bring you some Nets,” spits Jay-Z, part owner of the Brooklyn Nets, on 2007′s “Hello Brooklyn 2.0.”
Well, just look at how time flies. The NBA team’s move from New Jersey to Brooklyn is now finally set to take place next season as the official logo was unveiled earlier on Monday (April 30).
Dubbed by Nets CEO Brett Yormark as the “new badge for Brooklyn,” the logo sports a black and white colorway. ESPN reports that Jay-Z played an instrumental role in the design of the logo.
“The Brooklyn Nets logos are another step we’ve made to usher the organization into a new era,” Jay-Z said in a statement received by ESPN. “The boldness of the designs demonstrate the confidence we have in our new direction. Along with our move to Brooklyn and a state-of-the-art arena, the new colors and logos are examples of our commitment to update and refine all aspects of the team.”
While the team’s jerseys will be available this September, fans can now purchase their Brooklyn Nets gear, including T-shirts and other apparel with the new logo, now on netsstore.com.
Hov and the rest of the Nets ownership and front office are hoping that the move to Bk brings the franchise better fortune. The Nets finished the lockout-shortened 2011-12 NBA season with a 22-44 record, closing it out with six straight losses.
Although the relocation to Brooklyn is exciting to many, there are those in New Jersey who aren’t taking the move well.
“My message to them is, goodbye,” said New Jersey Governor Chris Christie after the Nets last game played in Newark, New Jersey. “You don’t want to stay, we don’t want you. That’s one of the most beautiful arenas in America they have a chance to play in, it’s in one of the country’s most vibrant cities, and they want to leave here and go to Brooklyn? Good riddance, see you later.”
Despite Christie’s feelings, the 2012-13 season should indeed mark a new start for the Nets.—Ralph Bristout
