Pimp C’s Widow Wages War With Rap-A-Lot Records Over Masters

Pimp C’s widow is entangled in a legal battle with her late husband’s former record label, Rap-A-Lot, over the Port Arthur, TX MC's forthcoming posthumous album, Still Pimpin', reports the Houston Press.

After Rap-A-Lot leaked “Grippin’ on the Wood,” a new song off of the disc, set to drop next month, his widow, Chinara Butler, faxed Rap-A-Lot a cease-and-desist letter.

Butler accused the label of not paying her as well as others associated with the Underground King’s productions, according to allhiphop.com.

In turn, the label filed a petition on June 17, stating that due to previous agreements between Rap-a-Lot and the Butlers, amended before and after the rapper’s death, the label has exclusive rights to all of Pimp C’s solo recordings created between October 2000 and December 2007, the time of his death.

The petition also asks the court to declare that Rap-A-Lot is authorized to use Pimp C’s name, image, likeness and music.

Rap-A-Lot’s petition also says that Butler never delivered 10 masters, an agreement that both parties consented to previously.

As of press time, Rap-A-Lot is scheduled to release Still Pimpin’ on July 17.

Pimp C is one half of the legendary Port Arthur, Texas group UGK along with rapper Bun B, who also appears on “Grippin’ on the Wood.”

He died on December 4, 2007, due to an accidental overdose of promethazine and codeine. —Martin Spasov
