Guru Tribute to Take Place on Thursday

On Thursday, April 21 New York City’ s Le Poisson Rouge will host a tribute concert paying homage to Guru on the one-year remembrance of his unfortunate passing.

The concert will feature members of Guru’s family, several of his collaborators from his Jazzmatazz series and several surprise guests.

The Jazzmattaz series ran concurrently with Guru’s Gang Star career and he’s credited with being one of the early adopters of jazz influenced hip-hop. —Khalid Saalam

I know I will piss a lot of people off by saying this, but…..

Preemo has seriously dropped the ball on this one. As much money as Gangstarr made for him and as many years that Guru and Premier put in together, you would think that DJ Premier would exert some of his industry-wide influence to get a proper tribute created for his fallen comrade.

Not voicing his severe annoyance with how BET sh*tted on his dead homey and not putting pressure on XXL, The Source, and Vibe for some type of tribute shows how poorly Preemo prioritizes.

While many people consider DJ Premier one of the best (if not the best) pure producers to ever pick up a Sampler, people forget how instrumental Guru was in bringing attention to DJ Premier’s top notch production. Without Guru, there would be no Preemo. And you can bet on that ish. And while Preemo has produced for everyone in the game, his best work without a doubt came from the Gangstarr camp.

Preemo needs to man up and do his homey justice. Take control. It is his responsibility to let the world know what Guru meant to the game and to the Gangstarr Foundation.

Then again, maybe he just doesn’t give a sh*t.
