DMV Awards Shut Down Due to Violence

Last night (March 6), the DMV Awards were shut down due to violence at the fifth annual event held at the Crystal City Hyatt in Arlington, Virginia.

The gala that celebrates music from the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia area, was broken up around 10 p.m. EST by Arlington County Police, according to The Washington Post, due to several fights breaking out during intermission.

“There were approximately 1500 people in attendance and multiple fights broke out, and there were multiple 911 calls,” Arlington County Police spokesperson Det. Crystal Nosal told The Post. TDB.com also reports that the event was fully staffed—with security being provided by the hotel, the police and a private company.

According to both news sources, more than five people were injured and while an investigation is taking place, no arrests have been made. Due to the altercations, all the awards were not given out but winners included Tabi Bonney (Best D.C. Male Rap), RA the MC (Best Female D.C. Rap), Gods’Illa (Album of the Year), Phil Ade (Mixtape of the Year) and Fat Trel (Breakout Artist of the Year).

DMV native , Wale, who was not at the event, took to Twitter to express his disappointment, “just heard about the DMV awards… DC hiphop took major steps last year… And now this. WE gotta do better.” Stay tuned as more details emerge. —Nicole LoPresti

    I personally don’t think that DC has reached the level of prominence on Hip-Hop’s world stage to justify an award’s show. Wale’s a decent MC but as far as DC goes, that’s it. There are some cats in Maryland (Kev Brown, etc….) but DC definitely doesn’t need an awards show at this point.

    That being said,

    What do you think will happen when a bunch of gully dudes (aka ex go-goers turned hip-hop artist) have the arrogance to try to put on a non industry sanctioned awards show? Poor security…. Hood rats….. and everyone’s carrying…..

    Basically….. Poor planning produces shitty results….. Catch up!

  • Sha

    And for the record…. I am aware that DMV stands for DC, Maryland and Virginia. But let’s not get it twisted… Was Pharell or Timbaland there? How about The Clipse?

    So it’s still the same sentiment with me…. A bunch of DC cats trying to stage their own awards show. They don’t deserve it yet.

    • X

      Actually, the DMV is only the D.C Metropolitan Area (all of D.C, a tiny sliver of Virginia, and a part of Maryland). So, no, Timbaland and Missy Elliot are far off from the DMV. That’s a common misconception though.

  • Ringo

    How do you know what DC needs or deserves? And just to let you know, the DMV does stand for DC, maryland and Virginia but this applies to Northern Va, not the entire state of Va. The Clipse, Pharell and Timbo are from the Tidewater area of Va, not Northern Va so of course this show wouldn’t be for them.

    This awards show is not intended for a national audience. This is about local artists that are still trying to make a name for themselves. The show has been getting bigger every year and this is a big set back. Everyone has to start somewhere and a local awards show means a lot to those that are nominated. If you’re not from the area, then you may not understand. I’m from the area so I wouldn’t have too much to say about an awards show in NY, Philly or anywhere else if I didn’t know what it was about.

  • Sha

    @Ringo…..

    What are you implying here? I don’t think my statement gave my residential address….. You made an ass out of yourself by implying my locale based off of my statement….

    For the record….

    The Ibex Club……

    Addison Road…..

    South East…..

    Donny Simpson (until he bounced)….

    95.5 WPGC….

    That old Junkyard…..

    Now tell me this…. Where do you think I’m from? You assumed the first time, go ahead and assume now….

    I stand by every statement I wrote. DC doesn’t deserve a Hip-Hop awards show until their artists become more prominent on the Hip-Hop World Stage. Nuff Said…

    sha that dosent mean you are from dc

    Sha, regarding DMV talent, I think your “throw the baby out with the bath water approach” is a very narrow view. However, I do agree DMV artists are their worst enemy especially if you can’t seem to control yourself during an event organized to benefit talent in the area.

  • jdot

    @Sha All the artist u named are from SOUTHERN VIRGINIA dumbass. The dmv only includes northern va.

  • No Show

    Sha I couldnt agree more

  • RUGBOI TY

    IM FROM RIC, VA AND I NEVER KNEW DMV WAS ONLY FOR NORTHERN VA. I GUESS WE DIDNT GET THE MEMO.

    @Sha

    Replying to your initial comments.

    1st, DMV as a whole (as you have said) has not made a major splash on the map, minus Wale. And as a DC Resident for 24 years and counting, I can tell you that regardless of the argument of Wale being from DC or not, he HAS put DMV on the map. He has opened the door for local artist, and I respect and appreciate him for doing such.

    Now with that said, You stated “DC definitely doesn’t need an awards show at this point.” which makes absolutely no sense to me what so ever. This awards show was a local event, to celebrate and pay notice to up-and-coming local artist. It was on any major publication when it was being planned and promoted, but due to violence it has now became almost a nation wide blemish.

    I think DMV do need to continue awarding new and up and coming artists for the simple fact of letting them know (when they are making good music) that people hear you, they like your music. it gives encouragement to artist.

    2ndly, “ex go-goers turned hip-hop artist” mean’s what exactly? Your entire tone of your initial posting seems to be a negative one, for 1 (and I’m willing to go out on a limb here) ANYONE who was born and raised in the district will tell you they enjoy at-least 1 go-go band. so just because some become rappers doesn’t mean they stop liking go-go nor does it mean that all of go-go followers, and attendee’s are “a bunch of gully dude”.

    I am not debating rather you are from DC, Maryland or Virginia because honestly on the World-Wide-Web it doesn’t matter. but my disagreement with you comes from the fact you speak as if you know for a fact that all of dc rap artist are local hood’s attempting to just wreck shows and venues and cause problems. when that is clearly not the case.

    I am not excusing the event’s that took place at this years DMV Awards, but I am defending DMV music artist and the genre of Rap and culture of hip-hop within the DMV from people who want to paint the entire tri-state area in a bad light because of one negative event.

    People have disagreements and they clash ego’s at time’s, this world is NOT perfect nor is any of the cultures within this society.

    Does it matter what region DMV represents? The reality of the situation is that once again, we all look bad on the account of a handful of knuckle heads. Is that hard to understand that the media just needs one black guy to fart in church to make national news…? C’mon it’s time to wake up.

  • RUGBOI TY

    I AGREE WIT CHA KOSOZI. CAN SOME BODY STILL LET ME KNOW BOUT THIS NORTHERN VA BUSINESS. “COLLEGE DAY” WHICH I THOUGHT WAS DEFINITLY A DMV THANG WAS HELD DOWN IN YOUR SO CALLED SOUTHERN VA (RINGO & JDOT). ALL THE PEOPLE WERE FROM MD, DC , ALL REGIONS OF VA, ESPECIALLY RICHMOND. JUST TO MAKE SURE I WASNT GOING CRAZY I HAD TO MAKE SOME CALLES (EVERY PERSON WAS FROM RICHMOND) AND THEY WERE JUST AS CONFUSED AS I WAS. CAN ONE OF YALL NORTHERNERS ANSWER THAT FOR YA BOI.

  • RUGBOI TY

    BESIDES ME BEING CONFUSED ABOUT THAT, IT STILL WASNT A GOOD LOOK CUZ IT SHOWS WE CANT HAVE NOTHIN. ( THE WHOLE REASON THEY STOPPED COLLEGE DAY DOWN HERE). WE STILL GOT A LONG WAY TO GO AS A PEOPLE.

  • Kasozi

    @Rugboi TY

    Its B.S. when people say that DMV only applies to certain areas, if thats the cause then it wouldnt be D-M-V. That’s another problem, everyone want to have “DMV UNITY” but NO ONE willing to unify under 1 banner to push our area into the lime-light.

    Too much ego and too many hungry people, but if we take a lesson from the deep south and see how they unified (especially Texas) we would be ok, but until then we gone continue to bicker and fight.

  • bdong

    none of your comments really matter. what happened at the awards is typical (and stereotypical) of the crowd in attendence. it was a waste of organizers’ money and furthers the perception that the “community” has little real talent or ability to behave like a part of society (at least society off the green line).
