Eminem Jumps Into Top Ten, Ghostface Debuts On Charts

It seems the holidays treated Eminem well, at least in terms of album sales.

In his 27th week on the The Billboard 200 charts, Em’s Recovery climbed from No. 22 last week all the way up to seventh. To date, the album, released in June, has sold over 3.35 million copies, including 137,300 this week.

Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday remained the eighth best-selling album for the second straight week, moving 132,500 units to bring her total to 791,000 since last month’s release. Kanye West’s latest came in at No. 19 this week, as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy sold 85,600, creeping up to 823,700 sold since it dropped in November. T.I.’s No Mercy also remained in the Top 40, moving 71,500 to come in at No. 25. The incarcerated rapper’s latest offering has sold 300,600 to date.

Ghostface Killah debuted on the charts with his latest disc this week. Apollo Kids sold 13,300 copies in its first week. —Adam Fleischer

Ok….. Here we go again. Another win for Eminem and Nicki…. Another loss for Def Jam and Kanye….But a truly fucked situation for hip-hop as a whole.

    First…..

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL EMINEM OR NICKI HAS A BETTER ALBUM THAN KANYE. NO WAY!!!!

As one magazine recently put it, Kanye has crafted an album that musically crushes every other hip-hop album in history. Yep. It’s better than “The Chronic”. Yep. It’s better than “Illmatic”. Yep. It’s better than any Jay-Z/Fugee/Tupac/Public Enemy/Lauren Hill album. Musically. And all of the critics and magazines agree with this thinking. KANYE’S ALBUM IS THE SHIT!!! UNIVERSALLY!!!!

So what’s up with this shitty sales performance? Nicki has almost caught up with Yeezy’s numbers. And although I think his music is no where near his previous efforts, Eminem has sold more than anyone. Why???? It’s not better. It hella worse.

The onus is clearly on Def Jam, Kanye, and weak-minded hip-hop fans. Why?

Def Jam for their failure to implement strong leadership with a clear dedication to Hip Hop. Hiring an R&B mind to helm the only Mecca of Hip-Hop was ridiculous. That and their over indulgence in R&B. Kanye’s numbers are suffering because of this lack of leadership.

And Kanye. Not for doing what he did or saying what he said, but for underestimating how truly racist America is. Yeah, your President is black, but most your billboard-pushing fans were White. And judging from the sales, most of them were back-woods Taylor Swift fans. Didn’t you learn anything from them damn Dixie Chicks?

Hip-hop is alive. Truly. But this trend of promoting bullshit albums over true product is killin’ us. Not calling Nicki and Eminem’s albums b.s. but they are bullshit compared to Kanye’s. Truth.

    • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

      LoLz @ seal

but Sha’s got alotta truth in that sentiment…

“Critics like it,but the public doesnt.Even Nicki is catching up with him.”
“it doesnt matter if he had the dopest album evar, l think the common people, the people out there buying music, are just fed up with him and his antics”

^ this right here…people are being overwhelmed by the press, they’re drawing conclusions on the music and artists according to the press…if TI was around, I bet the press would be on 100 milli for his “comeback”, his album is doing good, no? Imagine if he was around to promote it.

‘Ye will be alright, his numbers are quite similar to BP3′s in terms of selling stages…and Nicki’s #’s are manufactured, anyone in the know knows this…like they know DJ fUxed up the Ghostface promo…a simple verse over ‘Devil In A New Dress’ would garner hella promo to push more units for Starks…

    • sb

      well said….

    • Tyrannical T

Eminem released possibly the best comeback album Hip Hop has ever seen. Love it or Hate it
Nicki is the biggest female rapper since Kim thus inheriting the title of Queen.
Kanye has a great album! Up there for best in 2010, but he sells only to Hip Hop Fans rather than the people as a whole due to material (lyrical subjects) and his media presence (i personally love the dude but many think he is an ass). That is what makes Kanye West the Kanye that we all “know” and love.
Now if we’re talking Hip Hop albums that deserve higher sales I’d rattle off Talib Kweli and Cudi (hate him or not he made a complete album like Kanye)

    • Worley

@Sha: “Def Jam for their failure to implement strong leadership with a clear dedication to Hip Hop. Hiring an R&B mind to helm the only Mecca of Hip-Hop was ridiculous.”

“Apollo Kids sold 13,300 copies in its first week.” One need not look any further for proof of what Sha said. It’s a damn shame.

    • RealTalk

Kanye has a dick, and right now, it’s in your mouth.

    • Donte

better than illmatic hell nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo , not even its defiantly a classic but you tripping

    • http://www.youtube.com/wiseguyue92 WiseGuy

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” better than Illmatic and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill? LOL that’s a joke

    • Philly_4L

The only problem with that comment is these magazines critics and corporations that say kanyes album is so good are also promoting rappers like soulja boy, waka flocka, and gucci mane and sayin they are makin quality music and somethings wrong with that

    • Escobar9300

Man they must have been handing out free samples of haterade on every corner today. If you for even a second think that disaster of an album that Kanye put out is better than Recovery, than you are fucking delusional. Kanye is a fucking nut case and drama queen and will never reach the heights he has fallen from (ie: Late Registration, Graduation).

Both of those albums were borderline classics that I GLADLY spent my hard earned money on back in ’05 and ’07 respectively. So please don’t take this as me being some dude who hates Kanye and has never liked him. After Graduation dropped, I would have gladly said Ye is the undeniable heir to Jay’s throne without a shadow of a doubt.

But this new bullshit Ye’ is on makes me feel like I should have gotten paid to listen to that abortion of an album (fantasy AND 808′s were both fuckin disasters). And for ONCE, I’m asking just for ONCE, can we cut the bullshit that the “man” is holding down black artists in favor of Eminem? How about you admit that the better album is fuckin selling and the shitty albums don’t have the longevity? You don’t have to like Eminem to admit that Recovery was GREAT, not classic and I won’t argue that it is classic, but GREAT.

That new Kanye album is flat out trash, and for the record, so is Nicki’s new album. So please, stop with the half assed, racially charged semantics and get with the facts: Eminem has been kicking your favorite rappers asses on the charts for the last six months because he tried harder and people give a fuck what he has to say. Unlike Kanye who wore out his fuckin hip hop welcome about 3 years ago.

  • teddy

shut up idiots fucked up situation for hip[ hop who gives a shit about sales they dont reflect anything everyone downloads shit ur just gonna have to get over the fact the platinum age is gone and no one is gonna be moving units in a decade or so ull be lucky to selll 100 units its about the music not fucking sales

  • Warrior

EM is selling like crazy because he has great lyrics,he is personal, hounest and raps about things people can identyfi with.He doesnt rap about bling, cars and money.

Kanyes album is good, but some of the reviews it has gotten are way over-rated.Critics like it,but the public doesnt.Even Nicki is catching up with him.

  • caino

Damn Ghost!! Def Jam really. fucked up on this!! cos it is a dope album but advertising is practically non existent, as for Kanye….well it doesnt matter if he had the dopest album evar, l think the common people, the people out there buying music, are just fed up with him and his antics…….usually the critically acclaimed albums dont do hot numbers ( shout out to Roc Marciano). As for Nicki l dont fuck with her musically (only sexually lol) l got respect the mumbers she is dropping !

    • swype-matic

I think the people tired of his antics or whatever are Taylor Swift fans. Everybody else with common sense just wants to hear good music, which Kanye has mostly provided. I do think MBDTF is a bit overrated, cause the beats just aren’t as real and soulful has his 1st 2 albums. The lyrics of course are on point, but the majority of the beats are overly produced synths and just pretty drawn out.

    ^^^Is that you, Kanye?

  • Jhon da Analyst

Everyone’s been biggin up that Roc Marciano project. May have to check that out….

    • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

check that out…arguably the best Hip Hop album of the year…not a mainstream rap album…

      Roc Marciano-’Marcberg’
      Black Milk-’Album Of The Year’
      Ski Beatz-’24 Hour Karate School’
      Curren$y-’Pilot Talk 1′

      ^ good music

      • http://www.emcdl.com EmCDL

Yes….that Marcberg is official, as well as the rest of those albums you listed. Pilot Talk 2 is the business!

  • pap3rchazer

and the grammy for Album of th Year goes to…..

  • http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2010/12/eminem-jumps-into-top-ten-ghostface-debuts-on-charts/ notblack

@don pilot talk 2 is absoluty amazing. Gotta include that one. And you have to realize thaat people will puchase work from people they like that even more imprtnt then the music cuz if you respect the person or this person getts lotta buzz thats the persons work yopull look at and possibly buy. But ya some people just dont have taste and thats also a factor.

  • Q461

    Roc Marciano-’Marcberg’
    Black Milk-’Album Of The Year’
    Ski Beatz-’24 Hour Karate School’
    Curren$y-’Pilot Talk 1′
    ^ good music

Co-sign. The 2 Curren$y albums are hells overshadowed by Em, Ye and Nicki. Add The Roots and Cudi to that overlooked list and Distant Relatives. Ghostface as well.

    @ Sha

I agree with you but only partially. Nicki’s record is certainly trash compared to Ye, but Recovery is pretty dope man. All in all its hard to compare Em to Kanye. Totally different styles. Minaj has a teeny bop fan base. All in all, Ye and Minaj will both go platinum so no losses.

Please consider these factors: Em dropped earlier this year when not much else was on the charts for him to compete with, even Drake dropped before Recovery and started to cool off a bit. Ye and Minaj both dropped 4th quarter so they are going head to head sales-wise. Its a much more competitive time of year and because of the economy, heads arent always gonna cop both, you get one of the other. And Minaj has a demographic that Ye doesn’t have as strongly ( the 15 -25 year old female bracket). Not saying Ye doesn’t have those fans, but Minaj is tailor made for them. Also, Em had that HUGE hit single with Rihanna.. that alone is going to sell the album.. plus Not afraid and No love did very well. Like it or not Love the way you lie and Not afraid will sell an album more than Power and Runaway.

“As one magazine recently put it, Kanye has crafted an album that musically crushes every other hip-hop album in history. ”

This is a bold statement. I love Ye’s album and Recovery as well but I’d fall back on saying Dark Twisted Fantasy is better than Chronic, Illmatic,Reasonable Doubt, The Score, Me against the World, It takes a Nation of millions to hold us back or The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. These are cemented hip-hop classics homey. I don’t even think it’s Ye’s best record…I’d put it second to The college Dropout, just my opinion.

“Def Jam for their failure to implement strong leadership with a clear dedication to Hip Hop. Hiring an R&B mind to helm the only Mecca of Hip-Hop was ridiculous. That and their over indulgence in R&B. Kanye’s numbers are suffering because of this lack of leadership”

I co-sign this to the fullest. All in all, Def Jam has crumbled. Its no longer the hip-hop powerhouse it was built to be. Sad, but true.

  • BeerGangsta

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Sells!! EM wack shit still selling!! Minaj Pussy is selling her CD!! Shit is super wack!! Kayne will go Platium before Minaj!! TI fake shit will go Gold in 2 months!!

    • http://www.myspace.com/slotchmusic ms_spittuh

Wack shit sells all the time. Nicki’s shit was horrible. Hell even Afro Man sold a lot of albums…this bitch ain’t no different. Pussy eventually gets old and wrinkly so hopefully her pussy will enjoy the sells….other than that? Def Jam is pissing me off dude…

  • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

“Nicki is the biggest female rapper since Kim thus inheriting the title of Queen”

^ truth…thus the schematic behind ‘Pink Friday’ being released on Black Friday, the fix was in…it was her time to get the Xmas market, driven by the 15-25 young girl demographic wish list and retail pricing & packaging adjustments. If she would have came out in April, she probably would have done Ross #’s.

    @ notblack

I didn’t put PT2 up there ’cause I feel the 1st is a lil’ better, but if I did 10 it would be there (see Q461′s additions).

“Like it or not Love the way you lie and Not afraid will sell an album more than Power and Runaway.”

^ ultimate THIS…indisputable fact…these 2 songs alone obliterated more than 90% of Em’s previous catalog…candlelight vigils @ arena shows worldwide type of songs that keep artists paid for 10 years w/o an album release…

  • GoldenCyn

Boo Hoo, your just mad cuz Em is white and making black artists look bad. I hate R&B to the bone, so i had to skip most of Nikki’s album, and only like two tracks on the new Kanye, but i think the new Kanye and Em’s are top two this year, with Em on top of course cuz not many can bring it lyrically like him. Kanye is all about the lifestyle, power, money and women. Im so tired of all that, i have been listening to that garbage for two decades now; but Kanye drown the bullshit with good beats and great production.
Forever = Fast Forward to the Em verse
Drop The World = Fast Forward to the Em verse
No Love = Fast Forward Wayne’s verse and keep it Em
Romans Revenge = Nikki’s verse was good, but Fast Forward to Em’s verse.

  • SutterKane

That Kanye album falls into the “Just cause its diffrent doesnt make it good” Category for me, Heard it a couple times and blah, I deleted it……

Em stays winning, people can hate it all they want, he always gets the last laugh. Prefer his older stuff but Recvery was still a decent record, and by mainstream standards the only album worth buying at all, everything else I bought this year was Underground (Ill Bill vs Muggs, Tech N9ne Seepage, Ghostface new one is next on the list, etc) but as far as radio rap, Em’s shit was the only one worth hearing period

  • Q461

“I didn’t put PT2 up there ’cause I feel the 1st is a lil’ better, but if I did 10 it would be there (see Q461′s additions) ”

Co-sign. I think Pilot Talk 1 is a bit more accessible than PT2. Part 2 is dope too, but has more of a laid back vibe with a cohesive feel where the songs blend well into another while the first one had more tracks that are dope and can stand alone.

    Standouts on Both:

    Audio Dope 2
    The Day
    Breakfast
    Address
    Airborne Aquarium
    Famous
    Hold on
    Fashionably Late

Not for nothin, I’m getting tired of the Recovery vs MBDTF vs Pink Friday convo. Em, Ye and Minaj are all so different , and the convo turns to sales and marketing every time. Why can’t XXL run a feature on Pilot Talk 1 vs Pilot Talk 2???That would be new and different and lots of cats would comment on that shit .Both were dope and how often is it that an MC drops 2 albums in one year?? The last cat I knew who did that was DMX.

What did yall think of that 24 Hour Karate School shit? My only gripe is that Mos Def’s contributions werent included cause of licensing or some industry politic bullshit. Other than that, that shit was crack. Peace to Ski Beatz and Dame.

    • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

      ‘Airborne Aquarium’>>>>>>>>>>>>>

i think son settled in with them Ski Beatz for the 2nd one. Notice you ain’t seen nann a press over here for Curren$y & Ski, and they’re in the XXL backyard…this is what I was saying early last year about Vado…someone on staff hit the LIRR & go get Roc Marciano…he & Sean Price just did a collab (Snow Shift)…even Questlove was tweetin’ about ‘Marcberg’…’Marcberg Reloaded’ is coming…

      ‘Prowler 2′
      ‘Back Uptown’
      ‘Nothing But Us’
      ‘Go’
‘Cream Of The Planet’>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(yeah that was fUxed up at least he did the video tho…)

“Why can’t XXL run a feature on Pilot Talk 1 vs Pilot Talk 2???”

^ ’cause that would mean someone actually has to listen to music (luv 4 the team tho’)…

  • THE BOI

HOW IS EMINEM ALBUM SELLING THAT MUCH?? IDK ANYONE WHO HAS IT!! EMINEM IS WACK!!

  • Q461

    @ Don McCaine

Vado better be on the XXL Freshman next year, dude is nice. Roc Marciano too. I remember dude from that Pete Rock album.

Cream of the Planet and Taxi were dope. Damn shame Mos couidn’t get them cleared for the album. Those tracks you mentioned were fire too… Also like Do it big,(Stalley and Cool Kids) Scaling the building ( Spitta and Wiz( and I got Mines…( Stalley, Tabi Bonney, Ras Kass Nicole Wray)

That album had alot of young collective talent on there ( Spitta, Wiz, Jay Elec, Stalley, Tabi Bonney, Smoke Dza).

Spitta derserved more attention from XXL this year. A few writeups couldn’t hurt. Every other day was Kanye or Em.

    • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

Truth Q…whateva don’t make the print should be published online…but i know they read the comments…that freshman crop this year is somewhat booty though…

      Diggy
      Vado?
      Wiz?
      Lil’ Twist?

      who else?

  • Tumi

And the grammy Album of the Year goes to… RECOVERY!

Bt we know dt grammys are so anti-hip hop, it’s sickenin, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t win it!

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

KANYE IS A FUCKIN JOKE, GOOD PRODUCER THATS IT,
EM’S ALBUM IS SHITTIN ON HIS FOR A REASON. Its good.

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

For those who say you think Ems album is wack and you know no one who has it must be idiots, and friendless.

HHHHH EMINEM 100 week > kanye first week
no one fuck with em in music industry

  • caino

its all about tastes and everybodys is different!!:

l listen to most this year:

Pac Div – Dont mention it mixtape
Nas & Dame Marley – Distant Relatives
    Roc Marciano = Macberg
wiz khalifa – kush and orange juice
Rick Ross – Teflon Don (yeah l said it!! )

  • Sawzall

Kanyes ablum don’t sell cause almost every song is on the radio and everywhere nobody gonna pay for a buncha songs they already heard. Em and Nicki are selling cause the shits hot.

  • Q461

    @ Don mcCaine

Word you think it’s booty? I thought that there were alot of cats that could be considered…

in addition to Diggy, Wiz ( was last year) Vado, Twist….

    KRIT
    DZA
    Yelawolf
    Stalley
    CyHi Da Prynce
    Kendrick Lamar
    Laws
    Dom Kennedy
    Meek Millz

Kinda tough what constitutes a “Freshman” though….Is KRIT really, Yela? They have techincally put out albums….(Yela’s was considered a retail mixtape, KRIT’s was free online)

This is why Drake and Minaj declined to appear last year.. They are kind of a year behind in some cases, or more……I think Lupe was in 2008 and Food and Liquor dropped in 2006….

  • Sha

I hate to say this but…….

Eminem is being propped up by the same lames that propped up Vanilla Ice.

    Need proof?

Name one “Urban” radio station where Eminem is getting regular rotation. Name one! That’s all people. One!

And if you name it, include the link to their website that shows Eminem as number one in their top rotation.

But this won’t happen. Why? For the same reason a Milli of Eminem’s last albums moved out the door. Eminem is repped almost exclusively by the White audiences. He simply isn’t gettin’ that kind of love from Urban stations. Sorry. Fact is fact.

Eminem is a dope lyricist. I ain’t takin’ that from him. He’s in the top 5. But this album is a “Blonde” product.

  • RyN

I have all three albums Kanyes, Ems, and Nicki’s honestly I think Nicki Minaj’s album sucks and was a waste of my money. As for Em and Kayne I am split 50/50 on whose album is better I really can’t be offended whether someone says Kanye’s is better or Em i could make an argument for both. I can say that beacause of Kanye’s arrogant and rude ass I downloaded his for free. I have bought at least 15 cd’s thsi year and have bought all three of kanye’s previous cd’s I love him as an artist I just refused to buy his cd this time around and It’s because of his attitude.

  • RyN

Sha………..Obviously Eminem doesn’t need urban radio stations to play his music I would say he’s doing pretty good for himself. I don’t see your Point could you elaborate.

    • Sha

      @RyN

The point of the whole discussion…..

Please refer back to my earlier comments (the first comment on the board). My point was that I was trying to understand why Eminem and Nicki’s albums were selling (if not OUTSELLING) Kanye’s album.

The frustrating point about this whole thing to me is this……

The majority of Eminem’s fans have problems with analyzing data. No matter what he drops, no matter the quality of product, they will always try to defend his stuff to the umpteenth power.

I am not an Eminem fan. I am not a Kanye Fan. I am not a Nicki fan. I AM A FAN OF HIP-HOP AS A CULTURE. And to be a fan of this culture there’s a degree of honesty that a person must have for themselves and the genre as a whole.

Race is a factor in these numbers. To ignore that shows even less respect to the artform. Saying that “it has nothing to do with race” when it comes to Eminem is B.S. because a large portion of the gasoline that has fueled hip-hop since P.E., Young Black Teenagers, and N.W.A. has been about race. But when the discussion regards Eminem and his record company’s blatant exploitation of his color (yep I said it) is brought up, people try to say “No. No. No. It’s about skill.”

Now trust me. I know what it’s like to root for your culture. Most black people were happy when O.J. got off because he was black. Most people were happy Obama got elected because he was black. So I can appreciate the enthusiasm for a white guy to see Eminem rock a “Black Man’s Sport” to such a high degree of skill. I understand that. But just because Obama’s a black man doesn’t mean I’m going to be happy that dude is gonna MAKE ME get health insurance. I have to be mature and wise enough to separate the race thing on the basis of reality.

Kanye’s album is better than Eminem’s. Not only a little better. Waaaaaaaay better. To deny this is like denying the earth is round.

And race is absolutely why Eminem is selling more. Be honest people.

  • RyN

Sha……. you know Eminem owns his on urban radio station right?

  • Q461

    @ Sha

I hate to say his homey cause I usually agree with alot that you say… but you coming off like Benzino with that comment.

First, Em has his OWN station. Second, radio ain’t the same as it used to be anyway. Internet marketing/advertsing/word of mouth/ will sell an album more than a video on MTV or radio play will these days ( Can see more videos on youtube and other sites these days anyways) People don’t fuck with FM radio like they used to also.

Lastly, Em just crafted brilliant singles that crossed-over to mainstream pop stations that sold his album. The meat of the album for hip-hop heads is songs like Cold Wind Blows, On Fire, Seduction, So Bad, and the joint with Havoc. He’s not doing anything different than other rappers have, he was just incredibly succsessful this time-around.

50 has done the same thing. So did LL Cool J. Jay-z even. It’s how you sell an album homey.

50 put out those joints with Timberlake and Robin Thicke to try and sell Curtis (but real heads were checkin for My gun go off and I get money (ironically the biggest single off the record and quite possible the biggest single of 50′s career except In the Club)

LL made radio sappy joints on almost EVERY album, but balanced them with the street tracks for every Hey Lover with Boyz II Men there was a Who Shot ya….

Need I say more than Jay-Z’s Bonnie and Clyde joint with Beyonce off Blueprint 2… Show me what you got off Kingdom Come….

“Eminem is repped almost exclusively by the White audiences. He simply isn’t gettin’ that kind of love from Urban stations. Sorry. Fact is fact. ”

No-sign. I know plenty of black/latino/asian dudes that fuck with Shady.Real Hip-hop should be color blind at this point Besides, you think White people aren’t also the ones buying Drake, Minaj and Kanye’s albums? Weezy?? Cmon Man.

And you know it ain’t fair to compare Em to Vanilla Ice cmon dog.

I understand if you arent feeling the Recovery album we all have our own tastes, but you kinda sound like you just salty Ye hasn’t sold as much as Em just yet.

    • Sha

      @Q461…..

Benzino dude???? Are you for real?????

We can agree to disagree….. But Benzino???? All cause I choose to have a different point of view?????

      Ok.

No person on earth would dare compare Eminem to Vanilla Ice. As an MC and as an artist. You are correct. That would be very stupid on my part.

But if you think for one moment that they aren’t “Brothers” in the marketing sense, you are mistaken. White America is notorious for trying to push across White artists with “black” performance abilities. If I’m lying tell me this…. What about Elvis Presley? Vanilla Ice? Young Black Teenagers? I suppose I made those up, huh?

So calling yourself “Niggas With Attitudes” wasn’t racial.

So having a picture of Uncle Sam wearing a Toe Tag and making songs like “Black Korea” isn’t racial, huh?

You see, people like you kill me. The racial equation cuts on both tones. White and Black. And last time I checked Dr. Dre (a black man) was getting some change from Eminem. So is Interscope.

Record companies have used Black fears and Black Anger for years to propel consumers to the isles. It’s not just a White thing. It’s an exploitation thing. I.E…. Money.

You see, yall try to make it seem like I don’t like Eminem cause he’s white. That’s so untrue. But 1 plus 1 equals 2. If you have a quality album like Kanye’s and you Eminem nuts start spouting off like his album is the shit, I have to check you. Eminem’s album is padded like hell. Just like Nicki’s album is Kotexed up with the female dollar. But because I’m saying this does that make me a sexist? No. Because it’s fact.

It’s funny how I put up the challenge of someone coming back to me with an urban radio station with Eminem in the top ten in rotation and everyone wants to bring up Slim Shady owning his own radio station. Show numbers people!!! Stick to the challenge. You haven’t done it because you can’t find it. My theory is thoroughly supported. Like it or not.

caucasians filled the seats at PE, Common (“when we perform it be coffee shops & white dudes…”), Wu-Tang, NWA, and many more shows…this is known fact for years…Sean Price gets more love in European countries than hood cities…’Ye ain’t selling like that because Blacks don’t support their own, they have the “on to the next one” fickle mentality…Em has fans who will buy his material no matter what he did at an award show (Bruno anyone???)…real spit from a hood OG from the streets of NYC…the truth hurts but at least acknowledge it….

Yo Q (Bishop voice)…I should slap myself for forgetting Krit…

  • Q461

    @ Sha

I apologize for the Benzino shit, you just came off very anti-Em cause he’s white with that comment even if thats not what you meant.

“But if you think for one moment that they aren’t “Brothers” in the marketing sense, you are mistaken.

At this, I agree with your examples of Vanilla Ice, YBT, Elvis etc but what about the lage amount of other white rappers that havent broken through on Em’s success level for various reasons?? (ie their sound, their talent , their focus etc) What about Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Copywrite, El-P?? These dudes are all nice and are all underground white rappers. Dre chose to align himself with Em because of TALENT, he even said so and had no idea he was white when he heard him. What about Paul Wall ( Whose race has been overlooked by fans, because of the fact he has TALENT) MC Serch ( Co-signed cause he had talent) Yelawolf (the same) Pitbull is a WHITE cuban rapper that only achieved moderate success) If it’s just cause Em is white, WHY DIDNT ASHER ROTH GO PLAT?

When NWA and PE and Cube first put those types of recods out, people were scared. The record companies became down after the first precadent was set that these albums could sell, but Chuck D wasn’t told to push pro-black music, he wrote what was in his heart. The companies realized that these records did sell to BOTH black kids AND white kids who wre fasinated by the anger and who also wanted to rebel against their parents, so yes I agree with what you are saying to a point. Companies have made money off of race, but I dont think thats why Em sells records ( Maybe in the very beginning but, cmon dog he’s on his 6th record)

“You see, people like you kill me.”

I don’t really know what this means. People like me??

I’m not saying you don’t like Em cause he’s white cause I’ve had conversations with you and I know you aren’t like that, but your comment just came off that way.

Bottom line is I don’t think you can directly compare Em to Kanye. 2 totally different sounds. Would you compare 50 to Ye?

Also, like I said before keep in mind, Em dropped in the spring, Ye dropped 4th quarter, this will bring out totally different sales results. Who knows maybe in the new year, Ye will end up selling more than Recovery if he has a big resurgence and interest in his singles? Hint: a big budget push for All of the lights would help.

Lets keep it peaceful dog. You got your rights to your opinions as I do to mine. We all enjoy debating the culture and I respect your views more than alot of cats on this site.

    One.

    @ Don

(Bishop voice) “You know what? I am crazy..and you know what I don’t give a fuck ” lol classic movie

You see though is KRIT really a freshman or not? I think XXL got the timelines off on alot of these niggaz….

    • Sha

      @Q461…..

“You see, people like you kill me…”

That comment was basically me accusing you of being the typical Eminem fan and automatically assuming that I was “hatin’” on Eminem without the benefit of basic thought.

But judging how this is kind of a heated discussion I don’t think it’s fair of me to push across that sentiment. I apologize the statement and placing you in that category.

But generally speaking, talk is good. Definitely appreciate the opportunity to discuss topics with fam. Thanks for responding.

  • Q461

    @ Sha

lol we are both guilty then… I’m an Em fan but my fav rapper is Nas…and I consider myself like you to be a fan of the culture more than a fan of a particular artist.

It gets heated sometimes on here cause we got a passion for hip-hop. But its all good…. If everybody thought the same, the world would be a boring place. We can agree to disagree.

I apologize again for the Benzino comment lol nobody who loves hip-hop deserves to be compared to that asshole.

  • Q461

On a positive note, ( this should make any real hip-hop fan happy) I just read Kool G Rap is supposed to drop an album in April.

  • swype-matic

So Soulja Boy, with full promotion, marketing, radio, and tv ads, sells only 60 more copies than Ghostface Killah, who’s album I didn’t know what coming out until two weeks before??? WOW. At least that shows that shitty dumbed down music from Soulja Boy didn’t get bought, even though more people still should’ve copped Ghost’s album.

  • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

don’t think I haven’t noticed the glaring oversight that Teena Marie’s passing hasn’t been mentioned…’Firm Biz’ by The Firm used her music…I think sampling should be revived to revive Black Music…

    RIP Teena Marie

    • Sha

      @$yk….

On the real…. Teena was the truth! Straight Fire! It’s really disrespectful how XXL let that slide. Also on the Guru ish. I have a laundry list of issues but I don’t want to take that into 2011. Let’s hope for the best next year.

  • MindState

Okay first off who said this shit?! ”

“As one magazine recently put it, Kanye has crafted an album that musically crushes every other hip-hop album in history. ”

Now dont get me wrong for a second, I really like Twisted Fantasy and I been bumpin it on the reg since it came out but…Come on son…Really?

Secondly as far as Ghost’s album sales situation I think you can only blame Def Jam so much. Maybe they should have promoted his album better but the fact is is that people know that Apollo Kids is out but most folks just download their music and that’s just how it is in these days. Im glad that not everybody does it though and I’m not judging at all but still I want artists to get paid for their craft, especially emcees like Ghost who I truly admire.

    • Sha

      @Mindstate…..

This is Sha…. I SAID THAT SHIT!

But it isn’t only me. Check Newsweek, Vibe, Mtv, BET, Usatoday, EW weekly, Rollingstone, and the list gets longer. Usually I don’t care what any critic says. But this many people can’t be wrong.

Do yourself a favor. Read my posting again. I said MUSICALLY. And I stress again…. MUSICALLY!

Do yourself another favor. Go on the internet and buy your instrumental “Chronic” album. Purchase “Illmatic” the instrumental. Purchase any of Tupac’s instrumental albums. And lastly, purchase that new instrumental Kanye joint. Now sit down and listen……

If you can tell me after that any of those albums stand up to Kanye’s production after you listen, I will take back those words. Then I will lobby Rollingstone, MTV, and any other critic that made those comments. But that’s an ice cube’s chance in hell. No one can listen to those instrumentals and not admit Kanye put out the best musically produced hip-hop album of all time. Dre is a good producer. So is DJ Premier. But none of them has anything close to this that they’ve put out. And I stand on that.

      • jonny bizness

Sha u r right my girl bought me sum speakers and a new amp for my car for christmas i put mdtbf on the sounds are outrageous pure genius it got me driving like lewis hamilton especially to ‘hell of a life’

  • Q461

    @ Don

You know, its funny but I noticed that too. On this site, they tyically just talk rap, whereas on allhiphop.com. they talk about r &b too and other topics that affilate with hip-hop culture including sports figures/actors.

Fugees also had a Teena Marie interpolation on Fu-gee la. Sampling should be revived. So many classic R & B, pop, soul, rock joints to choose from and put a hip-hop twist on.

RIP Teena and all others we lost this year…Guru , Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper ( dope actor, who directed Colors a hip-hop classic film) and niggaz be forgetting Apache passed this year too…..

    • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

“and niggaz be forgetting Apache passed this year too…..”

^ no lie…I could actually see Gucci re-doing ‘Gangsta B^tch’

what do they rest of y’all think? seriously…one of my fave sample songs this year…

      ‘Just Saying’-Ross f/Jeezy

this song gets play more than 10x a day for me…

p.s. XXL cut that check 4 Q, Sha & myself for holding y’all down this week…or send some comp pkgs cheapskates…

      • Sha

lol. On some real ish….. PAY UP XXL!!! These 3 dudes ($yk aka Don mcCaine, Q461, and myself) be straight regulating debate up in here! As Raekwon said at the beginning of that OutKast song….

“Pay up, nigga. Pay up! Pay up! Yo, pass that Henney…”

  • Q461

lol no doubt man the 3 of us just made this news blurb gold commenting back and forth…. They must be on vacation, no new features, blogs or even news stories in days…

Not the biggest Gucci fan, but could be a cool remake.

Hot Ross track. I would argue Ross/Cee-lo-tears of joy one of the best songs to come out this year….

  • http://www.emcdl.com EmCDL

I have both Em’s and Kanye’s albums and I barely listen to both after listening to them the first time. They both good albums but they just don’t really have any ‘crack’ tracks to keep me listening to them (even Monster got old for me). And I don’t plan on getting Nikki Minaj’s album anytime soon either…she fine as hell but her voice is annoying as hell too.

Now them Curren$y albums are crack!

Its plenty of great albums that should have sold way more with the rest of the crop this year…so dissappointing the way the public views music. If it ain’t on the radio and being heavily promoted right up against your face, people won’t check for it, unless its word of mouth…and even then folks are still complacent. SMH…

  • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

just opened my email @ the site…thanks for the love y’all lurkers…I’ma play close attention to da sounds…connects…movements…Cult & I will be doing music & movie reviews the upcoming calendar year…

B Eazy & E-Fluent got next…they hungry…I’ma kick it wit y’all for anotha 30 & I’m 5 thou ’til da 3rd…Y’all know who I’m kickin’ it with…happy happy and let’s sit at the round table…NSYOSTFU…this would have been a perfect thread to do this…shows that Sha is somewhat right…

  • elrey412

kayne sucks, plus he is a d-bag

  • Q461

    @ Sha

Its funny cause I overlooked that too, didnt realize you were saying instrumental-wise Kanye’s shit was better than those others….

I just think that lets take for arguement’s sake, The Chronic, illmatic and MBDTF and go off of beats, no rhymes.
These 3 are like all so different from one another…..The Chronic was that lazy deep bass and sythnesizer shit with the P-funk samples…this actually ushered in a new style called g-funk…..Illmatic was mid 90-s boom bap beats at they’re finest with some of hip-hop’s greatest beatsmiths on the boards ( namely Primo and Pete Rock) and MBDTF has a bit of everything: the soul samples that Ye has become famous for, (Devil in a New Dress) some pop elements ( All of the lights) Some of that euro- electronic fusion sound, some rock elements and some more auto-tune.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a sprawling effort and he certainly pushed the element sonically as he always does….I just feel they are so different that its so difficult to say one is “better” than the other.

I respect your opinion though and that of those critics. These are just my thoughts.

My only real gripe with the record ( and I loved it) is some of the tracks are just way too long.

  • MindState

@Sha lol Okay my dude I hear you. I definitely agree that Twisted Fantasy is a NEAR masterpiece, I really do, but I just cant sit back and say that it’s the best produced album of ALL TIME!! Not at this point in my life cycle.

Maybe im biased because those albums you mentioned like Chronic and Illmatic I literally grew up with and TF just hasnt been in my life’s soundtrack for long enough yet if that makes sense.. But who knows maybe one day my opinion will change. For now though I think your statement is extremely strong..

    • Sha

      @MindState…..

It’s cool. What everyone fails to realize is that difference of opinion is a good thing. You’re right. Ultimately time will be the decider. I grew up on that Illmatic too. So it was hard for me to admit this. But the problem with hip-hop in general is some people want to keep it permanently 1992. Growth is good. And in order to grow you need to embrace the fact that some things can get better with time.

Illmatic will be always remembered by me as the greatest hip-hop album…. until a new greatest comes along.

Kanye hasn’t done it yet. But he came pretty damn close. So did Outkast with Aquemini.

      1. Best all around album: ILLMATIC
      2. Best Lyricist: Nas or Biggie (kinda torn because we didn’t see Big’s full potential. So I will kinda give this one to Nas)
      3. Best Producer (Total body of work): Preemo
      4. Best Commercial Producer: Dr. Dre
      5. The Best Musically Produced Album: Kanye West

Could go on with this. But once again, I respect your opinion. Enjoy your holiday fam….

  • Jojo

Em wins kanye lost. I love both tho

  • @24kLILCOE

THE GAME, HAWTHORNE, CSI MIAMI, ONE TREE HILL & BOSTON LEGAL…featured my music, check 4 it in 2011, LIL COE!

  • warren buffet

Ghostface Killah is horrible and always has been. I know 20 people personally that are better then him. Kanye makes great music but everyone is absolutely sick of his crap. Eminem is the greatest of all time and his album sales are proof. Nicki Minaj is hot cause a wayne and drake and that fad will end soon. T.I. makes some of the best music out there but he is just been fuckin all the way up over the last 2 years. Best rap album of the year is Teflon Don…Rick Ross crushed the game with that one. Where you at Jeezy??!!

  • Malik

Madvillainy, hell any DOOM album, is better produced and lyrically sharper than all of Kanye’s work. Also, stop complaining that other artists are selling. The anger should be directed at Ye’s fans who aren’t supporting the album. Congratulations to Em and Nicki who’s fanbase actually went out to buy the album.

  • Stylistic

Sha are you kidding me? “As one magazine recently put it, Kanye has crafted an album that musically crushes every other hip-hop album in history. UNIVERSALLY!!!!” How old are you 18? First of all Kanye’s new album is alright at best, there are only 4 or 5 bangin songs on it, the rest of the shit is a pop album. His new album doesn’t touch any of the other albums you mentioned, nor is it anywhere as good as Eminem’s Recovery and I could name you a few albums this year that blew that bullshit out of the water. E-40′s Day Shift and Night Shift, Brotha Lynch Hung’s Dinner and a Movie, Ice Cube’s I am the West, and Ghostface’s Apollo Kids! Cmon man get off Kanye’s nuts! And where the hell did you read that article about Kanye’s new album musically crushing every other great album in Hip Hop history? Maxim? Fuck outta here with that bullshit!

  • RepDaRoc

Ghost only 13300 units, get the F@ck ouf of here. Niggas aint checking for the real sh!t.

  • Stooby

kanye is fucking horrible. his first album was the shit but after that i could never get into his bogus mindstate of self indulgence. he is a hypocritcal piece of shit and will never put out another album successfully. he should go back to making beats and that is it
