DJ Cipha Sounds in Hot Water Over Comments About Haitian Women

Protesters plan to rally outside of Hot 97 today over a controversial comment made by DJ Cipha Sounds last Friday (December 17) during his morning show with Peter Rosenber and K-Fox.

During the broadcast, Ciph joked, “The reason I’m HIV negative is because I don’t mess with Haitian girls.”

He quickly apologized on-air, after the station received an abundance of phone calls and comments online slamming the remarks. “I made a stupid, tasteless joke,” he said. “I want to say sincerely that I apologize. I said something stupid that I’m embarrassed about.”

Members of the Haitian groups like BelTiFi, the Haitian American Caucus, and the Haitian Roundtable are all expected to show up outside of the storied radio station today, and demand that Cipha gets fired.

Hot 97 has yet to comment on the incident.

This isn’t the first time a Hot 97 morning show host is in the hotseat for racially insensitive statements. In 2005, Miss Jones and DJ Envy were suspended following an uproar they caused with their Tsuanami song, poking fun at those killed by the natural disaster. Two producers on the show were also eventually fired. —Elan Mancini

  • Worley

That’s an ironic statement coming from someone named Luis Diaz. Blacks and Hispanics/Latinos have the highest rates of AIDS in the US. Or do you not mess with Black or Hispanic/Latina chicks either? Fuckin’ clown.

  • beanoo617

reading what cipha said, in text, looks way harsher than hearing it. i listen to the show all the time and in no way, cipha has anything against hatians. yeah the joke was in poor taste, seeing what the country has been through. but there wasn’t any maliciousness behind what he said.

and side-note; its seems pretty funny that these organizations have the time and energy to picket outside of the station, for nonsense…i mean your country is in a damn near state of anarchy, but they’re putting time and effort into something silly like this. when it can be directed at improving conditions for people in Haiti.
and if you want to protest against something, why not Haiti’s corrupt government and rene preval?

    • Dready

Beanoo617 your side note is invalid to the situtation at hand. He should have never made a “joke” like that especially if he had any morals. Certain things you just don’t say. Yes Haiti is going through difficults times on many levels but what does that have to do with people standing up for whats wrong…..NOTHING! To you it may seem small and silly but the constant disrespect my people and country face has been going on for too long so if it has to start with him then so be it. Since you know some much about whats going in Haiti why dont you help? By the way whether you read it or hear it its DISRESPECTFUL, OFFENSIVE and HURTFUL.

      • beanoo617

FYI i have “helped”. the only reason i know about the problems in Haiti is because i have a lot of Haitian partners and I’d bet any dollar that they could give 2 fxcks about a “joke” someone made about Haitian’s.
and save me with the “constant disrespect” of your people. my ancestors were slaves and America has and will always remind me and “my people” that we’re not equal or adequate.
the fact of the matter is that it was a bad joke and he apologized….lets move on to more important matters.

        • Dready

FYI- Haitians are also African Americans. So I know all about slaves and what goes on in this country when it comes to African Americans. Anyway I’m not going to have a debate with you about this topic….it is what it is! He was wrong and he should deal with whatever comes his way due to his OWN actions.n I’m Done.

          • Don mcCaine

            I kinda agree w/bean on this…

there’s a cholera outbreak, with buildings still in rubble, with billions of dollars in aid being held up by the world bank, and they’re gonna protest a DJ who apologized about a joke.

Go protest at the UN & tell them let the funding thru to help the people on the island.

        • Dime

Yeah… I’m sure you’ve text HAITI to 55555 and “helped” but that does not validate your position to say that haitians do not care about this ignorant statement. Just like Cipha saying “Sak Passe” means two sh**s… he’s shown his true colors now. Point blank… haitians are suffering and we will not stand for anyone who tries to demoralize us with false foolery.

    ^^^

Haitian organizations pretty much did the same thing back in ’04, instead of lending their US resources to aid their homeland after the Prime Minister was overthrown they complained about the depiction of Haitians in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

  • Dready

Why are you people so focused on whats going on in Haiti? when thats not the issue at hand…and if your not helping stop talking about it. We really dont need anymore ignorant people roaming the earth….growth doesnt happen with people like that. Now back to the isse Cipher was wrong and thats the bottom line. Thanks

  • alderman j

There is some truth to every joke, but he should take his punishment like a man, if you open your mouth you should be prepared to deal with the consequences. But people are two sensitive these days!!

@CIPHA!! I GUESS A LITTLE SUCCESS DOESNT GIVE YOU BRAINS!!! HOW CAN ONE JEOPARDIZE HIS CAREER BY SAYING SOME STUPID SHIT LIKE THIS!! CIPHA IS AS IGNORANT AS THEY COME!!!!LESSON LEARNED PEOPLE!! SUCCESS DOESNT CHANGE CHARACTER!!!IF YOUR AN ASSHOLE…YOU’LL BE A BIGGER ASSHOLE WITH SUCCESS!!!everyone is entitled to their opinion but WOW!!! THIS STATENMENT BY CIPHA IS IGNORANCE AT ITS BEST!!

  • Steez Diamante

Anyone that knows Cipha knows he’s a genuinely good & real person. To an extent, Ciphe & Rosenberg are shock jocks and that’s why they have their jobs, so there’s often a fine line between what’s tolerable and what’s too far. Although the comment was extreme, it does not warrant losing his job. The man creates far more laughter and entertainment than he does negativity and controversy. A far better alternative would be for him to prove his apology by working with various Haitian groups to raise money for Haiti. It’s the new year, lets get off on the good foot and turn a negative into a positive.

  • Hannibal Cannibal

This shows the mentality of a lot of dudes out there who, although they’re black and/or latino, think they’re better than other blacks. Hip Hop use to be the artform of the downtrodden but now you got people like this clown who, once they’re tossed a bone and get a little shine, got to shit on their own people. How foul is it and how far has hip hop sold out that Cypha Sounds and Rush Limbaugh say the same shit. He was probably the same cat rocking african medallions back in the day. Man Hip Hop has changed. Dudes like this got jumped on the reg. Morning show hosts are worse, they got to be extra loud and extra crass just to keep ratings, but this dude right here showed his true colors. no integrity

  • hakimah

how stupid and immature is he not only Haitian have HIV where did he get that from .

  • GATA

I wonder how eager you guys would be to move on had he modified his comment a bit and said “I am HIV negative because typical Puerto Rican to me–mean black blood clear and true

It is true that Haitians should be rallying support for more important issues, such as holding the UN and US accountable for their part in the failed elections in Haiti, but one has nothing to do with the other….Mr. Cipha has no idea what negative memories his boneheaded comment conjured up for Haitians everywhere….Considering he is Puerto Rican, one would expect a little more sensitivity.

I truly believe he was kidding around and I have no doubt he has probably slept with man Haitian girls; however, knowing this fact makes his comment even more disconcerting. An example should be made of him. They can start by firing him. It has nothing to do with Haitians being sensitive. We tolerate the HBO jokes, we tolerate the non-English speaking jokes, but this one was over the top and there is no humor in it.

    • GATA

      ooops–repost

I wonder how eager you guys would be to move on had he modified his comment a bit and said “I am HIV negative because I do not sleep with Black women”. He appears typical Puerto Rican to me–mean black blood clear and true. Would a slight change in his comment make it more worthy of attention then?

It is true that Haitians should be rallying support for more important issues, such as holding the UN and US accountable for their part in the failed elections in Haiti, but one has nothing to do with the other because addressing Mr. Cipha is equally important…How can Bill Clinton suggest a recount of these tainted votes when it obvious to every cat and dog that the elections were rigged? Why? Because Haitians are not respected by anyone.

….Mr.

To Dready and Bean it makes no sense for us to sit hear and argue about something we both know was ignorant and wrong. We must understand that we are all one colored people just divided into different regions of the world but we all originally came from one land! Keep in mind if it were not the Africans in on the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and D.R.) Africans everywhere would not be as free as they are today. If it were not for and an African rebel from the island of Jamaica Boukman Dutty who continued with insurgent tactics that led to the Haitian Revolution 1791-1804 the only successful African slave revolt in the world, which helped liberated South and North America, may have never come to fruition.

I say all this, to remind us its not just fighting for Haiti but to stop perpetuating ignorance that leads to the division of our people (blacks all over the world)! We need to educate ourselves on who we are so we will not continue to uphold Willie Lynch’s plan

I believe Ciph’s comment was naively ignorant and because he does not seem to be aware of the plight Haitians has suffered with HIV stereotype in America he has jeopardized his career. But I think we all especially Ciph can this moment to learn a valuable lesson and that is for us to really understand the people we come in contact with and really understand that there is no disconnection between black people . As MLK said “an injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere” thus we must fight against the U.N., we must fight against derogatory statements, we must fight against and challenge all things that seek to bring us black people at an inferior state.

As a South African i think cipha is a asshole for making a joke about people with aids. I’ve lost friends and family from HIV plus his soundbombings 3 was WACK!! so fuck him and i hopes he gets fired. VIVA!

“It is true that Haitians should be rallying support for more important issues, such as holding the UN and US accountable for their part in the failed elections (and failed relief $s dispersal) in Haiti, but one has nothing to do with the other because addressing Mr. Cipha is equally (not as) important (because we have people dying from a deadly disease)…”

i am tired of you mcCaine

      • http://www.bboycult.com Don mcCaine

why because i’m speaking the truth? getting a relatively no-name radio DJ fired is more substantial than assisting the people dying on the island? I’m not defending that guy and could care less about him.

so he’s “suspended indefinitely”, the problems on the island still exist.
