People don’t see there are two types of music running parallel. Hip-hop and Hip-pop. What soldier boy and others like him, including Gucci do is hip-pop. It has nothing to do with traditional hip-hop wordplay and concept craftsmanship (complex storytelling). What hip-pop does is present a beat and a catchy theme, usually no more than a song consisting only of a protracted hook.

In hip-pop you don’t have to do anything interesting with the language. You don’t have to do anything interesting with the flow. You just have to make a record packaged with an image little niggas will bounce to.

Hip-pop requires marketing. The music itself isn’t distinguishable from a talent standpoint. It’s like anybody can do it, but everybody can’t do it, because it requires professional support. Hip-hop on the other hand is a skill. Most people can’t do it on a professional level. In other words there is like 12.8 million people in America that can write a song as well as Soldier Boy and vocalize it over a beat on his level. On the other hand there are probably like less than a 1,000 people in America that can write a hip-hop song on Lupe’s level and spit it over a beat.

i don’t think he is trying to diss Lupe. he just said he doesn’t want to go over everyone’s head like Lupe does. (not that capable of doing that).

but that’s one of the reason’s Lupe doesn’t sell very well. and Soulja Boy’s main concern is selling and getting popular. so he’s on point.
