Kanye Album Art Not “Rejected” From Walmat, Rep Clarifies

Whether or not Kanye West’s controversial album cover for his new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, will be appearing in stores next month is still uncertain, but as far as retail giant Walmart is concerned, it is not their fault.

A rep for the chain contacted Entertainment Weekly denying the implications that they refused to sell the disc due to the racy cover art. “We’re excited about Kanye West’s new album and we look forward to carrying it in our stores on November 22nd,” a spokesperson said. “As always, it’s our standard practice to carry the edited parental advisory version. We did not reject the cover artwork and it was never presented to us to view.”

As previously reported, ’Ye took to Twitter last Sunday (October 17) to announce that the powers that be did not approve of his vision for the front of his forthcoming CD booklet. “Yoooo they banned my album cover,” he wrote that afternoon. Adding, “In all honesty … I really don’t be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers.”

The cover in question features an all red backdrop with a distorted portrait of a nude Black male being straddled in a sexual position by a naked, angel-like White female. The Louis Vuitton Don told rapfix.mtv.com earlier this week, that along with that image, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, will also include four more covers.

’Ye’s 35-minute video for the album’s second single, “Runaway,” is set to premiere on MTV, VH1, BET and their respective websites this Saturday at 8 p.m. —Elan Mancini

why does wal-mart sell edited music , but they sell movies with the same language plus violence and nudity ?

Because movies have a rating system, and parents know the content by the rating on the box. The boxes also don’t show the nudity, or have the adult language printed on the cover. The rating tells you the content, and you can, or cannot choose to purchase it, and expose your children to it based on your personal values.

An album or CD can have a parental warning on it, but kids can still buy it. Parents are suppose to catch that warning and take the offending item away, if they so see fit. The problem is, most parents don’t really understand just HOW obscene some of those albums can be. I have an NWA CD that could melt the wallpaper off the walls. But it just has that general “Parental Warning” on it. Not a rating system to let parents know just how extreme the language and violence really is. Also not all albus are created equal. So a PG14 album with get the same generic “Parental Warning” on it that a XXX album about murder and gang rape will get. Also, CDs and albums also can come with obscene album art. Whereas a movie/DVD/video tape will not have obscene images on it unless it’s an adult album in an adult store. CD on a shelf can be looked at by children of any age, and most parents don’t really want their children learning about sex from a CD cover.

Walmart makes the personal choice to not carry CDs that contain offensive language and themes because it is not as controlled as DVDs. It’s their personal choice to do so because they decide what image they want, and it makes them come across as more family oriented. If people want the unedited versions, they know they can buy them anywhere else. They aren’t against the music, they just don’t want that image, so they choose to not carry it.

It looks like everyone is anticipating Kanye’s album selling major units. Even Walmart is getting “politically” correct with their statements. Let’s hope Kanye delivers.

So now that’s settled, the honest truth should come out that someone in Kanye’s camp thinks the cover is a bad idea and tryna find a reason for him to change it

    • Victoria

I know. Don’t you wish someone whould just tell him the truth for once? Just sit him down and lay it out for him.

U guys dnt think much huh? well in my opinion,i think he thought of this album cover to get attention! This is the most him/his album been in the news since that taylor swift shit, and his album comes out next month!!!(think bout it)..if his anticipation aint that big, then them sells arnt gonna be that big..which means everybody loose money on his end..him,record companys ect..and you dnt mess with white folk money.lol they’ll drop his blck ass in a minute.but if his anticipation aint big, expect his album to be pushed back!,just like Game(RED Album) and lupe’s new album… SouthCide Minneapolis in this beyoch!!!

In all fairness I don’t think he said Wal-Mart banned it, he was seemed to be implying that the label or someone was saying we can’t put this cover out because places LIKE Wal-Mart won’t carry it.
