Drake Projected to Sell 450-475K

It might not be a milli, like his Young Money mentor Lil Wayne, but Drake is apparently on track to sell about 450,000 to 475,000 copies of his highly anticipated debut album, Thank Me Later, in his first week in stores.

Industry insiders, hitsdailydouble.com, tabulated the T.Dot talent’s one-day sales to come up with their projections. The official numbers will not be available until next Wednesday, June 23.

XXLMag.com recently caught up with frequent collaborator Bun B to find out his estimates on Drizzy’s first week numbers. “It’s gonna be a multi-platinum album,” he predicted. “First of all, let that be understood: it’s gonna be a number one album in several countries across the world. If he does less than 500,000 in the first week, somebody dropped the ball at Universal [Music].”

Thank Me Later is in stores now. —Elan Mancini

    Oh no! Our infallible hero!?!

Impressive? Yes. Amazing? Not even close.

Can we all move on now? Please?

    • these posts are racist

P, what up? I feel you, yes, he is “manufactured,” etc. But I don’t think it’s fair to go at Drake, personally as so many people do. He’s living a great life, one that any of us would die to have…Also, he is “talented”. The point of this game is not to “put in your dues” for the sake of “putting in your dues…” The goal is to go from A to B…he did it without the struggle Jay, ‘Ye and others had to endure…so what??? Do you deny he has talent or that his music is good?

      • El Tico Loco

The issue is forcefeeding the shit 24/7, that can get on some people’s nerves after a while, whether is good or bad. This is the same stuff that got me tired of 50 cent 7 years ago and almost caused me not to buy The Carter3. If it was an issue of how he came up I wouldn’t mess with Robin Thicke, if it was about his subject matter I wouldn’t have Little Brother’s catalog.

      • http://Pierzy11@gmail.com Pierzy

I tried posting a response like 44 times but it wouldn’t take.

Cliff’s Notes version: He’s got talent but I don’t dig his music and I feel like he’s forced on us (like Asher Roth was)…and he feeds into it. I can’t respect that.

        • Young Mo Fo

No one is forcing you to listen. If its on the radio, get ya favorite CD out. Drake is good, and even though radios have played him out, his album sounds pretty solid. I mean if his first is his best..then his next isnt that good. Look at Nas, his albums get underrated becuase of Illmatic. Jay-Z didnt have that problem becuase RD wasnt his best, BP1 was.

  • KLETEWOOD

This dude must walk on water. WOW 475K? I need to sit down.

-Get the fuck outta here. He”s a Canadian Jew.

  • Sha

“Get the fuck outta here. He’s a Canadian Jew.”

    @KLETEWOOD….

I’m not understanding your point. How is that even relevant to the topic? Not to mention it’s ass-backwards and stupid. Maybe you should change your name from KLETEWOOD to PECKERWOOD. You sound like a racist.

Now getting to the topic…. People we need to be celebrating the successes of hip-hop. I’m not a fan of his music, but congrats to Drake. To move that many units in this day and time is impressive. Especially considering his album was bootlegged (and his record label making him wait too long to release the album). I think he would have sold more if he dropped his album faster and capitalized on the buzz. But congrats…. Us hip-hoppers need to stop with the cannibalistic mentality or hip-hop will die. Real talk.

    • KLETEWOOD

I wrote it because I knew someone would get pissed off.

Drakes Cool. Don’t Trip. Just fucking around.

HIPHOPDX gave the CD a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. That’s the lowest rating I’ve seen in a while.

I copped it. Bout to listen to it right right now.

i personally think he is a cornball from watching interviews but you can not deny that he has never made a bad song. every song is a hit, no matter what u say. and even if he is a canadian jew as someone said, that means u should be ten times hotter then if u trying to put him down for his race or if u think his music is wack. if he was wack, he wouldnt have all the rap veterans calling him to save their careers.

    • Mario

I think drake is amazing you can’t front on his catalog and what other rapper do you know that could debut today and sell that much that’s right there isn’t one ANONYMOUS i co-sign completly also i could tell you listened to the CD already with that last line

      • g*swift

  • mav

like him or not this is a win for rap not hip hop but rap thats jayz/em numbers if he woulda came out awhile ago he might did like 750000

  • SansBeach

I dont think Drake is terrible I just think he is extremely mediocre.
He is not a great mc and he is not great singer.
With that being said he did some decent numbers but I expect a very large drop next week.
And I dont think his career will have much staying power. He may have one or two more albums at the most thats it.

what the fuck you on about that its impressive to move that many units in this day and time? i bet eminem does 600,000 plus when he comes out next week and his album leaked a couple of weeks before release as well

also it was only 2 years ago when record sales were also at a massive decline that wayne sold a milli first week and his record leaked almost a month before release!

for all the publicity drake and support drake has had these numbers are not that good at all…as bun b said someone has dropped the ball here

  • http://www.bboycult.com $yk

So I guess the OG Bun was on target, huh?

Congrats to Drake. His next album will determine if he TRULY has staying power in this fickle game. And yes he is talented, but there are talented musicians in Julliard that don’t graduate or get into the Philharmonic.

But I will say, all of that other extra sh^t, he’s the new king, the over-saturation of promotion, the crowning of the new messiah of Hip Hop (ESPECIALLY WHEN THE ALBUM IS POP), turned people the f^X off.

I have BEEN saying, let this dude earn his stripes, like everybody else has/had to.

Now look at his numbers, with all of the extra additives and preservatives, and ask yourselves seriously, without the stan-ism, what can Minaj and J.Cole do? Pill? Donnis?

Say what you will about how #’s don’t matter, but these #’s WILL affect a lot of these rappers’ projects & budgets.

Even Wayne had an established demand and 2 super-hot singles.

Kanye West and Eminem will have the hottest albums of the year.

  • the #1 hater

ok..the carter 3 was a shit sandwich, having said that, drakes album is a double decker shit sandwich with extra shit on the side. if mcdonald’s sold drakes album it would be a doule shitter with cheese, if taco bell sold it, it would be called el shite’ supreme if wendy’s sold it, it would be a shitinator…not really sure what burger king would call it…but you get it. if you like this album you need to kill yourself for being a faggot who listens to faggoty music

Co-to the muthaphuckin-sign! I know alot of artist were hoping that his project sold through the roof because of the bearing it had on future projects. This was a gauge to see what would happen if the machine went full force behind a practically new artist…and i think it was a bit of a dissapointment. Like I said yesterday, with all the money they put into promoting this project, I’m pretty sure he has to go AT LEAST platinum to recoup the budget before they see a red cent in profit. And just think of how hard its going to be for new artist to get signed after this! 475K is great the first week, but its not the return you want from a guy that has been hailed as “the next big thing” for the past 2 years.

This is Drake’s first record. To go almost gold is impressive these days in the first week. I fuck with Drake, but alot of his better material came out before this album,. The thing is, his sales are gonna drop a fuckload next week when Recovery drops.

  • kedordu

HE CAME OUT 6 MONTHS TOO LATE . BOTTOM LINE . NONE OF THE SONGS WERE AS GOOD AS ‘FEAR’ AND ‘BEST I EVER HAD’ . U CANT DO THAT AND GET AWAY WITH IT .

i can’t believe b.o.b sold 50k and this clown sold 450 to 475 k. such bullshit if u ask me.

  • Clever

The Album could have been a lot better. But yes it will do some descent #’s

  • HNIC

Is this estimation including his international sells, as well as his domestic sells? Or is it strictly an estimation of his domestic sells?

You have to remember that he is Canadian. So, I’m sure that he’s going to do just as well there, if not better, than he does in the States.

  • Suvio Blue

he’s mainstream not hip hop, he sings…thats just corny! if i wanna hear any kinna singin ill by a Keith Sweat album, and the album sales…outta 500 thou, id say 350 off the bitches, maybe even 4…100 between cornballs, lil niggas and ppl that actually dig him. Dont get me wrong he got bars just like the other 4000 rappers out here, but i like that hard, grimey, dark kinna hip-hop…this just dont cut it for me

  • http://www.bboycult.com $yk

    % HNIC

    usually US estimates.

Most do agree it will sell beyond gold certification (although next week expect to see a large drop off in numbers due to Em).

But again, 2 years at full throttle for this type of gas mileage? That Boyle chick did way more with half the promo.

Maybe Drake should have did ‘Idol’…

  • brand-new

lol @#1 hater…looks like you didn’t care much for that one, huh?

  • GTFO

If Drakes album sales dont meet expectation then its almost entirely the labels fault.hes been raps”next big thing”for a long time, then they wait until his hype starts to die down to release his album.then on top of that a week or two before eminems recovery drops.its the same thing thats happening to lupe fiascos lasers(that was supposed to drop in december/january).these labels are making dumb a** descisions, then get upset with the artist.

  • M. Baby!

You know what, I came to the conclusion that Drake is not a rapper and he’s not an R&B singer. He’s a Pop act. That’s exactly how Lil Wayne marketed him to be, appeal to everyone. There is no more real Hip-Hop mainstream. Hip-Hop has grown so much over the past 30 years from not being accepted and not played on TV to it being the new rock n roll. You see Hip-Hop every where now. And when the real Hip-Hop heads drop albums and try to take it back to the roots, we don’t even go out and buy it. We talk all of this trash about how we want real Hip-Hop back and we don’t support it. There are as many real Hip-Hop fans as Drake fans and how can he sell half a mill in the first week, cuz they’re going to buy it, not downloading it. Raekwon dropped OBCL2 and that’s should’ve done the same #’s Drake is about to do in the first week, but we didn’t buy it (I did). I used to hate on Drake because everyone made him out to be this great rapper and he’s not. That’s the thing, everyone is making him out to be a great rapper and expecting this and that when he’s never said he’s the next Nas or Jay. He’s doing him and everybody like myself who’s an up and coming beat maker/producer or whatever your dreams are needs to just focus on doing you. As all the greats have said that the haters make you stronger. So all of this hating is only making Drake stronger. Do you so somebody can hate on you and then maybe you can rise to the top.

first of all 500,000 is still very good for first week sales. but his buzz is nowhere near lil waynes was when cd dropped, you couldnt go anywhere without hearing lollipop, i dont hear drakes single like that. plus, the cd isnt gettin very good ratings, that def hurts sales. when 50 and game did big numbers a couple years ago, they had buzz, plus great reviews. if this cd would of dropped last summer when best i ever had dropped, it would of done better. why build an artists buzz up then drop it a year later. it was the same thing with maino, he drops hi hater, gets a buzz, then has to wait a year till his cd drops
