XXcLusive: Tony Yayo – “When we got Dropped From Interscope, it was a Crushing Thing”

Getting released from his contract with Interscope, wasn’t easy for G-Unit rapper, Tony Yayo, to digest. The Queens-bred rep recently shared with XXLMag.com how it felt to get the boot and hints at 50 Cent’s new plans for the crew.

Yayo said when he first got the news, it hit him hard. “When we got dropped from Interscope it was like, ‘Aww, man,’” he shared. “It was like you know a crushing thing. You know, when you used to being on top and now you feel like, for me, you’re feeling like you on the bottom.”

Don’t feel sorry for Tony just yet though. The G-Unit soldier revealed that Fif is prepping a comeback. “God works in mysterious ways and good things is happening now,” he said. “The new opportunities are coming. I don’t wanna talk too much about them either ’cause I don’t wanna ruffle any feathers or anything, but 50 is definitely bringing G-Unit back to where it needs to be. “

“We was gonna go the independent route, ’cause we put out ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley,’ all that’s independently,” he added. “That’s with no machine.” But it seems like 50 has something else up his sleeve.

Meanwhile, Yayo says he didn’t leave Interscope empty handed. “When I got dropped, I’m not gonna front. I was a little down about it,” he explained. “It’s not like it was because of the money, because Interscope, they advanced me for my second album. So I got money that I didn’t even deserve…but it’s just the whole thing of being dropped and everybody looking at you.”

Guess what label it came out on?….Shady/interscope.(had to be signed by them already to have his debut single from his debut album to be released by that label) Interscope then gave 50 Cent his own label, G-Unit, in 2003. Beg for Mercy, the groups debut album came out in November of 2003. Guess what label it came out on….G-Unit/interscope!!!       Didn’t 50 sign his deal with interscope in 2002? Get rich or Die Tryin came out in Feb. 2003. They’ve been on that label for 8 years.
      And the comment about only making money with Koch selling 150000 records is false. If you’re an established artist with the resume of someone like 50, you can get match or get close to the royalty rate and album points at a major that they would give you at an independent. 50 is the one that made game hot!(no ricky martin)All the hits Game had on his debut album, were 50′s songs that he already had made. All he did was let Game throw verses and put it on The Documentary.

      It ain’t about the money. When Cash Money was upstart and with Universal, damn near everybody, whether it was B.G., Juvenile, Big Tymers, has at least 2 platnium albums, and no one except 50 from G-Unit can say that, so from a business perspective, its a better thing to keep around a label that can actually give you a good output than 1 person holding down over 6 artists at a time and still getting a check cut from you. I mean, you don’t keep putting money and labor into a car that breaks down every three days; you get rid of it and invest in a better vehicle.

      I’m not a current Cash Money fan, by the way, its just how the business works.

No offense but Ja Rule was one of the illest and most talented artist before he started beefing with 50. And the only reason he went at Aftermath was because they were backing 50.

    As for 50 writing all of Game’s shit, the only songs he wrote the hooks for How We Do, Church for Thugs, and Hate It or Love It. That’s 3 songs. Snoop wrote the hook for Westside Story and 50 just hopped in and stole it from Snoop. Don’t believe, go listen to the original Westside Story with Snoop. And I didn’t hear 50 contribute on other good songs like Running, Put you on Game, Dreams, Start from Scratch, We Aint, or Where I’m From.

    As for Lil Wayne being talented, can anyone admit he sucks. The only reason why he sells is because white retards who don’t understand hip hop thinks his lyrics relate to them and they buy his shit. I would take anyone in the Unit (and that includes the extended roster) over Wayne except Spider Loc and Tony Yayo.

    And let me explain something else, the Unit released an album in 2003 under Interscope, meaning G-Unit has been with Interscope for 8 years, Banks and Yayo have been with Interscope individually for 7 years.

    And that idiot stuckfresh should go jump off a bridge cuz he’s an idiot to even think Wayne is better than Pac or Biggie. Wayne can’t even compare to what 50 has done.     nick, I agree with some of what your saying, but other stuff is kinda sad. Now Lil Wayne is a joke, but to divide it into Lil Wayne camps and G-Unit camps is kinda something a jr. high kid would do. Seriously, why can’t people like music because its good. I like some of 50′s music, but I agree he does come out with weak shit every now and then (half the songs on the Massacre and most of Curtis). One of my favorite rappers is Game, but I thought half the songs on LAX were garbage (especially the one with Raekwon). And Stuckfresh, what makes Lil Wayne so special? His lyrics? Cuz Fabolous, Chamillionaire, Lloyd Banks, Lupe Fiasco, and many more have way catchier lyrics than Wayne, yet he sells more. If I ship 500,000 at 11.99 a cd thats almost $6 million and sell 100,000 at a retail price f at least 12.99 or 9.99 for when the cd first com out thats some where near $1 million and 1.3 million who you think the record company is coming for. Lets not forget the production and that advance they gave you are in debit to them at least 5 albums unless they say fuck it you can’t make us any money and cut ties.
