XXcLusive: XXL’s 10 Freshmen for ’10 Cover Revealed

Relax and take notes ’cause class is in session. After months of speculation over which rappers made XXL’s third annual Freshmen Class cover, the list of the 10 Freshmen for ’10 was finally revealed last week.

Now is the unveiling of XXL’s April issue’s cover, featuring the 10 Freshmen for ’10. Hip-hop fans got a sneak peak of the mag’s special cover yesterday on MTV2’s Sucker Free, when it was first seen publicly and today (March 1) it hits the web.

The new breed of hustlers includes: Roc Nation’s first signee J. Cole, gangsta rap up-and-comer Nipsey Hu$$le, newly-minted Asylum lyricist Pill, 1017 Brick Squad member OJ Da Juiceman, indie-sensation Wiz Khalifa, G.O.O.D. Music’s own Big Sean, underground favorite Fashawn, Gary, Indiana rep Freddie Gibbs, West Coast phenom Jay Rock and the latest addition to the Atlantic roster, Donnis.

In addition to the special issue, XXL will also be dropping an exclusive mixtape, DJ Whoo Kid Presents XXL 10 Freshman for ’10 Mixtape next Monday (March 8)—available for free on XXLMag.com, radioplanet.tv and thisis50.com—that will feature new music from all 10 of the cover stars. Whoo Kid will also be playing select cuts from the tape while the artists call in to his show this coming Saturday (March 6) on Sirius/Shade45.

This list is nowhere near as strong as last years group! Mainly because last year i didnt know much about any of them and when they came around it was fresh. With this years group, so many of them are already fairly well known and people know what their about. nippsey hustle and jay rock have been putting out decent material for the last year, pill has been getting a fair bit of spotlight recently with his last mixtape and J. Cole is talented enough without the label of xxl freshman around his neck, fashawn and wiz khalifa have both released albums over the last year with fashawn in particular getting great plaudits from this magazine. Surely once you release an album your no longer new so cant be considered a freshman? I dont know much about Freddie Gibbs, Donnis or Big Sean so they make it exciting. Finally OJ da Juiceman (who isnt good enough anyway) has already appeared on the cover of this publication! so whats fresh about that? i thought the whole point of this issue was to bring new unknown artists into the spotlight? not to boost the careers of artists already starting to establish themselves

I think if anything Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa definitely deserve to be on here. If you dont listen to Big Sean go do it now, he kills every song. Ive always been a big fan of Wiz since Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania so idk never listened to J. Cole but have heard hes good, Nipsey is ok. Get OJ the fuck off the cover
