Gucci Mane Speaks from Behind Bars in March Issue of XXL

“I wasn’t really able to tell my story before but I think I am now…” Gucci Mane says from behind a glass window in a visiting room at Atlanta’s Fulton County Correctional Facility. “Got closure on a lot of things now.”

After years bubbling beneath the surface, Gucci was having the best year ever, racking up hit after hit and high profile co-signs, but that all came to a halt when the rising trap star was put behind bars for parole violation on November 12. Still, the Atlanta MC went on with business as usual, dropping his much-anticipated album, The State vs. Radric Davis, and giving XXL magazine an in-depth interview for the March issue.

Interviewed by XXL’s Editor-in-Chief, Vanessa Satten, Gucci shares his thoughts on his recent ascent into the hip-hop big leagues; his newfound popularity; and the first few hours back in the big house. He also discusses his longstanding beef with Young Jeezy, expresses remorse for the mistakes of his past and much more.         Let me preface this by saying, I am not a Gucci fan by any means. His whole operation is whacked to me. In and out of jail, every time you turn around… Can’t really get with that.

        But, I think it’s a little presumptive to say that someone is a retard for not doing what you think they should be doing with their money. You shouldn’t make comments without the necessary facts to back up what you’re saying. Gucci is one of the most benevolent rappers – and there are many, that I know of. He does many, many things for the community on a local basis – in Atlanta. Charity starts at home, and spreads abroad, which is one of the most powerful ways to effectuate change – on the local level.

        He buys school supplies, from backpacks, to school clothes, to fresh haircuts, to sneakers, for kids to prepare for the school year without having to worry about their appearance, or what they don’t have. So many kids skip school to avoid getting made fun of, and this kind of benevolence allows the kids to focus on their education and not what they don’t have. I could also talk about the stop the violence concerts, talks, etc, that Gucci has been apart of… but I think I’ve made my point.

        As for the jewels, some people like boats, some collect cars, some like planes. Gucci likes jewelry. The only thing I would question is the quality. Some of the colors of the stones in his pieces really throw me… But that’s another issue.

      And there lies the problem with hip hop. It’s that everyone cares about anything but the music. I can see how people don’t consider rap as a form of music because no even the fans give a shit about it musically. Not once did any you or any of these Gucci supporters bring up the quality of his music as a case for XXL putting him on the cover. Just the simple “he making money” or “haters can only hate” speeches.

      Personally I don’t hate Gucci or deny him of being on the cover. I’m only pissed that rappers who had released critically acclaimed albums this year can’t even be featured on an XXL interview rather than make it on the cover. He was projected to sell about 100K in his first week. Almost as much as Cudi and only a few more than what Wale, Asher, and Reakwon sold. The criticism towards Gucci isn’t about an anti-Gucci campaign. This is about the fact that XXL would rather cater to one type of artist (gansta or dope boy rapper) as opposed to giving artists that bring the alternative a cover. Also Gucci may have gotten a second cover, but I can’t help but think he’ll end up like Jeezy when some other trapper rapper comes up with a catchy tune. The man clearly has no staying power since his fans only care about him getting money and not the music he brings.

But when a nigga gets seen on a mag no matter what the quality of his music may be. Not a single Gucci supporter brings up his music as a case for being featured on the cover. Just the simple “haters hating on Gucci’s grind” chant. If dude was so focused on building his career he wouldn’t have gone back to jail on violating his probation, now would he? Also Gucci being on a second cover doesn’t mean shit. XXL has had a history of promoting certain artists as future acts only for them to fall apart in the end (example: Suge Knight and Petey Pablo, the new Aftermath or G-unit covers). I don’t hate Gucci as with probably many othe people. I just hate the fact that people are so hell bent on supporting mediocre rappers who bring nothing to the table rather than true artists that can actually be defended on their SKILL AND WORK ETHIC, not just for releasing loads of shit mixtapes.
