Jay-Z Loses Top Spot, Drake Surpasses Kid Cudi on the Charts

All reigns come to an end. After two successful weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard 200, Jay-Z is now playing second fiddle to Pearl Jam.

Although falling to the no. 2 spot, Hov still continues to keep registers ringing. According to the Nielsen SoundScan Hov’s eleventh solo LP, The Blueprint 3, sold 134,100 units this week, making the living rap legend’s overall stats stand at 908,100.

Drake was able to hold onto his Top 10 membership this sales cycle, landing at no. 9. Drizzy managed to outsell fellow Universal artist Kid Cudi this go-round, selling 36,100 units of his So Far Gone EP –a condensed retail version of his popular mixtape from earlier this year. After two weeks Drizzy has officially broke 100K, with 109,700 in sales.

Falling six spots to no. 16 is the Black Eyed Peas’s latest disc, The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies). The group pushed 29,000 CDs off the shelves this week, bringing their 16-week total to 1,140,300.

Cudi surprisingly slid thirteen spots to no. 17 in his sophomore week, after last week’s impressive debut. The Cleveland rapper’s project, Man on the Moon: End of Day was still able to scoop up 28,300 in sales, making his two-week tally stand at 132,600.

Baton Rouge rep Lil Boosie also took a big dip in his second week, slipping from no. 7 to no. 30. Superbad: The Return of Boosie Bad Azz sold 15,000 units this week, bringing his total to 63,900.

Punching in at no. 40 is Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…Pt. 2. The critically-acclaimed LP knocked out another 12,000 units this week, putting The Chef’s overall numbers above the 100K mark, at 101,200 after three weeks.

Underground favorite Brother Ali burst onto the charts at no. 56, his highest debut on the Billboard 200. The Minnesota MC sold 8,600 copies of his new disc Us— the rapper’s third full-length solo album.

Hov is still going strong though. He pushed almost a milli in three weeks. It took the BEP twice as long to get there, and they’re a pop group.

I’m surprised Jay-Z slipped so early in the game, and how the hell is Drake selling more than Kid Cudi? So Far Gone is available for free, legally, online! Why are people buying the album???

Rae still doing his thing, those are some good numbers for this day and age.

I’m checking for that Skyzoo album next week for sure. And Playaz Circle still around? I thought they flopped after Duffel Bag Boy?

Y’know how heads and fans alike always say, “I downloaded the leak or whatever and like it so much I bought the actual product”? Eh, classic example hear… the nigga may have more staying power than we realize.

Thanks man appreciate it; I’m still experimenting with some stuff but moving towards a more hip-hop/R&B/Funk vibe. That new track I got up there will probably be the last of the ‘fast-paced car enthusiast’ stuff for awhile. Got some more in the oven!

      Relapse > BP3

“Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?”

      • murK

        hell no.

once empire state of mind drops…it’s a wrap!

what’s so crazy about rae’s numbers is that he’s indie.

        • http://www.xxlmag.com PhreshOxford

CO-SIGN… that empire state of mind is a HUGE record and once that single/video drops, case closed….

          -I AM OXFORD

        • Thomas

Co-Sign that. “Empire State of Mind” is a huge record.

      • Eric

I like Eminem and Relapse was a good album, but I can only listen to a guy rap about raping pop stars for so long.

Blueprint 3 is a new classic.

  • gkid1234567

    Wheres fab on the charts?

  • gkid12345

Lets try this again, where is Fab on the charts? How much did he sell? Why do 50% of my posts not show up quickly?

  • http://xxl All Dae

BP3 is dope. f buying Drakes mixtape i can get for free.

  • BeerGangsta

J will take 2 weeks for him to go Platium. BEP is still pouning them numbers in already Platium. Rae sell over 100k. The rest of them are shitty.

  • latino heat

anybody heard that Ghostface or Skyzoo yet? i’m getting Ghostface this weekend. still not sure about paying for that Skyzoo.

    • $ykotic/Don McCaine

I’ma iTunes some of Ghost’s songs, not buy the album. No lie I’m not feeling it like that.

nahright has the album stream posted. Skyzoo will get my support.

      • http://www.myspace.com/emcdlthemusicprofile EmCDL

Mos def getting that Skyzoo album. Hope he got a cut up there with Little Brother and Chaundon too.

  • Nate

The brother Ali album is pretty cool. He keeps making better and better music. It’s got all the lyrics as well. Good song with Freeway and Joell.

  • Nate

    Latino,

Copped the Skyzoo- took a chance. That’s real NY hip-hop right there that can be appreciated by all. I think that dude can write and he got good production, background vocals, everything to make it the 4.5/5 reviews that I read from the magazines. I won’t compare him to other name greats but it’s worth getting. Could be a most slept on album for 2009.

“Writin 16′s while runnin 16 businesses, all the while showin these young punks what the business is!” – Jay-Z “Reminder”

    475K first week
    270K second week
    134K third week

This man is sellin more in his 3rd week than most artists this year sold in their first week!

Oh, and in case you aint know BP3 is a classic. It may not be to alot of peoples tastes but all art is subject to each persons opinion.

  • MDAce15

    Oh and correction:

    Second Week: 297K

  • Stylistic

Dag-How do people like Lil Boosie move units? Better yet how sad is it that people like brother Ali outsell Krs-One, even if they are wood numbers still???

  • Anti-Mainstream

I’ll say this, this has to be the best year Hip Hop has had in a while, I mean record sales aside for some artists look at the string of good Hip Hop albums to come out…(Raekwon-OB4CL2 and his mixtapes, Blueprint 3, Slaughterhouse, Ghostface, Krs and Buckshot, Rakim coming soon, Fat Joe Tuesday, Canibus and Keith Murray’s UnderGods album coming soon. Jadakiss, Mos Def, Redman/Mef, Busta, and Eminem had solid releases earlier this year. It’s great to see a year like 2009 for Hip Hop with the string of REAL Hip Hop albums coming out and the slowly dying snap crackle pop dance bullshit. If we turn off the wack-ass radio and television, and keep it internet, REAL Hip Hop is back in 2009 and hopefully will continue in years to come. We are slowly getting the combination of lyrical substance and updated production back in the game. Anybody notice yet?

    • $ykotic/Don McCaine

“We are slowly getting the combination of lyrical substance and updated production back in the game. Anybody notice yet?”

You ain’t lying. But also peep your list and see how a lot of those artists are on the last gasps of their careers.

      • Anti-Mainstream

Probably, but I’d rather hear these guys at the last gasp of their career, then those who have been breathing comfortably the last few years, (Weezy, Rick Ross, Kanye, etc) I mean they make decent music but after I listen to them a couple times I’m tired of em already. The only fairly new head I could say I’m a fan of is Joell Ortiz, him more then anybody deserves to blow up…

        • $ykotic/Don McCaine

it’s too much going on to respond to everything but again you ain’t lying.

          My sentiments exactly.

J.O. is my homie from Cooperville, BK. He better blow up! LOL

  • King Joffy Joe

Damn. I hope record sales go back up like they used to be. Remember when a nigga shit would drop, and he does like, 650,000 in the first week? Nowadays, it’s takin’ niggas damn near a whole 1 or 2 months just to barely break the 600,000 mark. That’s only if you’re a vet in the game or your shit is on fire right now. That’s the only reason why Jay is still on the top 5 list, and Drake is top 10.

  • ff1one@yahoo.com

record sales, pssh i hope gas goes back down. See, people would by more albums if the value of a dollar wasn’t going down. Still, its amazing at Jay’s sales. not really, he just is going back to making music for the people vs himself and for therpay. Kingdom come and American gangsta were equally as talented, but the subject matter was over a lot of people’s head. I mean how many of us can relate to being rich and taking trips around the world. Or, being a gangsta. the blueprint has songs for the everyday man, and its beautiful to hear it on the streets. You got people of all races with the window down at the lights. Its everywhere. O ya, when he drops empire state of mind, o boy thats a big record. again, new classic.

  • Thomas

Jay is promoting the hell out of his album. Rae is putting up decent numbers without airplay, but he has been putting in work on twitter/facebook/myself, blogs/sites, etc promoting his album.

People brought Drake’s joint because they like the music and want to support.

The last half of the this year has been great for new music releases….still 3 more months left in the year.
