Jay-Z “Disheartened” With Scalpers, Tix for 9-11 Benefit Reach Unforeseeable Highs

Tickets sold out for Jay-Z’s 9-11 benefit concert yesterday (September 8) in 15 minutes, as scalpers scooped up large amounts of seats to resell for profit, according to the New York Daily News.

As XXLMag.com previously reported, proceeds from the show, titled “Answer the Call,” are going to the New York Police and Fire Widows and Children’s Benefit Fund. Close to 20,000 tickets were purposely set low at $54.50 a pop for the Madison Square Garden event, but scalped tickets are already showing up online for upwards of $45,000.

“We are truly disheartened that certain individuals would choose to benefit from what is meant to be a 100% charitable event,” Jay said in a statement. “We do not support any profits made from reselling any ticket that was meant to be purchased by honest fans.”

Jay said he put the tickets up for sale only days away from the event to curb this from happening.”Tickets were consciously made available for sale as close to the concert date as possible to avoid traditional scalping,” he said.

While the show will be Hov’s only New York appearance this year, fans who weren’t able to buy tickets can catch the performance live on the Fuse network.

The Brooklyn bred superstar will be heading out on a 21-date arena tour following Friday’s MSG show hitting up cities throughout the UK and North America. –Elan Mancini

Jay-Z embodies the “get rich by any means” mentality…it is beyond hypocrisy that he is talking about others trying to make money.

  • Dr Flav

To entertain spending $45,000 dollars for Jay Z tickets is an epic lifetime fail.

word. real recognizes real big homey. hope life/fam are all well. It’s been a struggle on my end…but i’m moving along.

Hmm, well dudes could say ” We are TRULY DISHEARTENED from money made in the streets selling illegal substances”, That others should “benefit” from selling abusive substances for profit…..

Get of it Jay. What did you brag about doing in all of your albums???
And why are you doing this charity for $50 tickets? It’s called free advertising, and tv time, so you sell LOTS of albums, and kick of the tour good.

Maybe some scalpers need to make a buck to “feed their familys”….

The market dictates Jay- I wouldn’t buy a scalped ticket. But you know what? THE TICKET SOLD!!! Money still f-ing goes to your ‘charities”.. and you still get your cut…

  • Dr Flav

No doubt, its been a struggle here to as well, but we built for this! Adversity is diminished by perserverence. I hope you fam is good as well. I’m telling you I’m trying to get up to see some of my classmates and people up there, so we gonna have to hit the bar or something and that’s my word.

I love how the entire world is looking at this and thinking that these scalpers are appalling and you idiots who comment on here are sticking up for them. The same people that are probably going to be wondering why they’re in jail later in life and begging for forgiveness. Then they’re probably going to hate the justice system for being right. Then I’m going to laugh.

Jay’s right. It is disheartening to see good money that should be going to the families of DEAD victims go into some idiots pocket because he thinks he can ‘beat the system’. So way to go champions, you’re really beating the system by taking money from victims of a horrible crime.

  • One900Romello

Now I was one to get caught up in that not getting tickets to to the Jay concert so be it. But the IRONY of it all is did the “I’M A HUSTLA” get out hustled? LOL

@ indykid, no one is sticking up for the scalpers, what they’re doing is wrong and illegal. what people are saying is that it’s hypocritical for jay-z to come out and say that scalping is wrong and disheartening while claiming that he “can’t knock the hustle.”

“It is disheartening to see good money that should be going to the families of DEAD victims go into some idiots pocket because he thinks he can ‘beat the system’.” i’m sure that hundreds of people in marcy projects and tompkins houses can say that it’s disheartening to see good money that should have gone to buying their families food go into the pocket of some young drug dealer named shawn carter because their drug addicted parents were more devoted to crack cocaine than they were to their families. that’s if we’re to believe that jay ever sold crack like he claimed he did. jay isn’t right, he’s a hypocrite. if the concert still raised the money that they committed, which they did, who was harmed by the scalped tickets? now ask yourself, who was probably harmed by the probable drug dealing of jay-z?
