XXcLusive: Fif Says Drake Doesn’t Have “50 Cent Buzz” [With Video]

Toronto upstart Drake has gotten a cosign from a laundry list of MCs, from Lil Wayne to Kanye West to Jay-Z, but if you ask 50 Cent, the Young Money associate’s buzz isn’t comparable to his own back when he set the mixtape scene ablaze in ’02.

XXLMag.com recently spoke to the G-Unit General about his opinion on the hype surrounding Drizzy and the comparisons many critics have been drawing between him and the up-and-coming rapper’s buzz.

“I didn’t hear that, I don’t think you can accomplish that right now,” Fif told XXL about his popularity in the pre-Shady days. “Not without finance. I hear his record on the radio. He got a good buzz, I hear him. Shit, it wasn’t possible for my music to be on the radio when I was coming. You know mine’s was completely organic.“ [Watch Below]

In fact, Fif believes that Drake is getting a push from the music industry, something he did not receive when he was unsigned. “When you hear a song on the radio it means it’s being worked,” he explained. “Ain’t nothing there just because, enough for it to be playing every hour on the hour. That song is being worked like he’s on a label. You know I’m sure Sylvia Rhone or Universal — they’re spending money to get the record played. They got the public feeling like its just happening.”

When reminded that Drake, has yet to accept any label offers, Fif responded, “He might not be signed yet, but they may work it to get him to sign. Is it worth it to sign until you develop that?” – Max G with reporting by Carl Chery

What i do remember is 50 getting’ the big co-sign from arguably the most popular and known rapper in america Eminem and most known producer the Great Doctor Dre.     Get a lil Lil Wayne/Jay-Z affiliation, mixt it with legit singing and lyricist talent, take a artist who already has the acting experience as well, and make sure he is primed for the ladies, and you have all the buzz you need to be a player in this Hot **, and KISS ** dominated industry. Push the record and you have a million records sold artists.

    I think the companies are extra careful now instead of taking a risk with thorugh street artists they want a MANUFACTURED artist with media savvy. The jury is still out for me but he’s gonna be successful. But not as big as 50. Nobody will hit the heights 50 did for years..

        As for 50, I agree with him to an extent, but he’s a hypocrite. 50 had a co-sign from Eminem and Dre, Em for obvious reasons and Dre coming off of the 2001 album. I don’t think this is a diss as the title here seems to imply and as some people calling 50 a hater are saying. But clearly 50 forgot his buzz had NOTHING to do with his “How to Rob Era”. I remember that song and while it was good, Jay-Z rendered 50′s entire career dormant with a one-line response to that song:

        “I’m about a dollar/what the fuck is 50 cent?” “When It’s Hot”

        The Ja Rule beef was pre-Eminem, and went quiet, but NOBODY was checking for Eminem (at least not here) until Wanksta came out.

        And why are we comparing Drake and 50? These are two different people. Drake has made it clear he doesn’t do beef. 50′s entire career was built on beef.

    I’ll ride with Curtis on this one, for the fact that I’m old enough to remember a different music industry than its been the last 10 years.

    An artist does a cameo/feature on whoever’s hot @ the times’s album. Usually one of the better tracks of the album. From there, the artist builds a small following, & eventually releases a single. That’s where the “buzz” started. Then it was up to the label to promote, the artist to deliver. 50 killed that with the mixtape hustle on full smash. He created his lane from the remnants of gangsta rap that lay forgotten due to shiny suits syndrome. Cats knew about him purely of his mixtapes (& a JMJ cosign, ironically), & back then that was sort of unheard of.

    So, I feel what he’s saying, he just didn’t have to be such a douche nozzle about it.

Think about it, you got people like 500 year old Paul McCartney still selling records but 50 can’t no more? Come on, yall need to see that the media is pushing this so young minority people can’t make money as long as their beloved white legends. And not to knock artist like Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane, but the media is also pushing these dudes to the front so that rap will stop being taken seriously and die. What does Universal look like helping to popularize a rapper who could reach a generation (Pac and Nas) and still have the style and street cred to blow on all levels.

    OK so…let me break it down…Yes, Drake is getting backed by other artis, but it IS b/c of the skillz he has…this man has placed 3 mixtapes on the streets and ne one familiar w/ the mixtape scene knows that he has been around for a mi, collecting buzz and gathering a loyal following…somewhat of what 50 says is true, but the way I look at it…50 took a different approach than Drizzy to get a buzz going…50 had “situations” that occurred in his life that he choose to set out & he also choose to come at artist already out (i.e. Ja Rule) to get people talking…Drake takes on a different approach…he is just being himself in EVERY SONG HE MAKES…50 always chooses to point out negative in others or knit pick w/other artist when he is getting ready to sale an CD, movie, etc…although very smart it is no longer amusing…I find it funny that he can talk about how this person isn’t hot b/c of this or how artist are not on his level…he’s right Drake isn’t on his level, he’s beyond…He didn’t make his 1st radio edit about dissing somone for the type of music he was making (singin’ hooks, songs for the laddies, etc) he choose to make a song that fit the audience he was trying to reach…LADIES…we are the ones that go out and buy and support the most, so he took the smart approach…like many articles have stated Drake has created so much of a buzz, that the release of his album is one of the most anticipated since Weezy’s last album…this guy has hustled just like other artist and nothing has just “come” to him!! 50 needs to FALL BACK, stop getiing mad when someone else is getting the spot light…go make some more of those songs u dissed Ja Rule for making

You think Universal is really gonna throw money at a kid who’s running around with so many other money makers? He’s touring with Wayne, Kanye is directing his video for “Best I Ever Had” and you think Universal is gonna throw money at the radio networks in the “hopes” that Drake might turn around one day and say, “Hey thanks Universal. Yeah, I’ll sign with you. Thanks for putting me on.” That’s the biggest joke ever.

    Labels aren’t doing anything for the industry other than acting like money sucking middlemen. And today you don’t even need em. You don’t need their studios to make music. You don’t need their promoters to market you. You don’t need their directors to make music videos… and you sure as hell don’t need them to distribute hard copy records. Everything is digital.

    If you don’t like Drake, it’s all good. If you need him to be a singer or a rapper or an actor… if you need him to pick one, it’s all good. But understand that that’s not the way things are anymore. For anyone who thinks otherwise, you need to get hip to the game cause this is the new school. If you want that paper, you need to do it all.

    Hate all you want. Drake just wants to be successful… and he will.

    The truth of the matter is that the times have changed 50 had a buzz when he was signed to columbia due to that controversial “how to rob” he ended up getting shot and his buzz had died cause he dropped from columbia he regained a buzz again when he started the beef back with ja rule of his mixtapes which in secured his deal with shady/aftermath (one of the best hip-hop producers and eminem who is also considered top 5 dead or alive mc) when the co-signed him it really sparked a buzz

    drake has never and i repeat never had a record deal he actually finaced his first mixtape himself (he had money from that degrassi series which i must say that show sucks the acting in that show is horrible) also now with itunes and several other internet sites where you can just download music for free or even put on your myspace page which drake did he created a buzz not to mention he is being co-signed by the hottest rapper in the game right now is also helping his buzz so actually to be honest you really can’t compare the buzzes right now cause it was two different times 2002 people were still actually buying cd and the internet wasn’t as big as it is now everybody pretty much has a computer and a mp3 player or ipod right now

    he does have a point, but you also have to think this as well…..how is drake doing shows? interviews? how is all that possible with someone unsigned? hes on remixes….people are on his remixes…hes had 2 videos i believe. all without a label…videos arent cheap, so how was he able to do it independentaly? he has to have some sort of manager or small team behind him that he has on payroll to accomplish this all. hes does have money though. do know this, drake is financially stable. best i ever had was a mixtape song, more than likely he financed tha mixtape on his own. everyone knows getting in the rap you have to spend money on yourself, you have invest in yourself. its common sense. maybe hes doing it on his own…maybe? there can be so many different ways that its happening but dont be so close minded to think its only a label thats pushing it.

    I’ve been in the music industry since 1998. & I’ve got to co sign what fifty cents just said. He is indeed being worked. & it’s mostly for the ladies… I wouldn’t be suprised if Jay-z and people like Kanye were paid to support him once or twice in a couple of interviews. & as for Kanye shooting his video… Hell that could have been a favor, or he could have been paid off as well to try his hand off at directing. Just so you all know Kanye went with the same look as DAVID BANNERS song/video “PLAY” when he filmed “BEST I EVER HAD” for Drake. It was a complete ripoff. I am in the music industry… I don’t hate on Drake but I can see right through him. They’re trying different tactics right now. It’s 2009 so the music industry is different than it used to be. Oh and YOUNG MONEY has the finance to back him as well. He’s got himself some good relationships in the industry because of his previous acting work in DEGRASSI as a crippled student. So well there’s a general rule of thumb in the entertainment industry. & that’s the fact that relationships are the most important thing you can have. Which is why some weak artists make their way up. By the way his “Best I ever had” video had so many women to intice men to watch it and hear the song. The idea is to get guys to catch on, while women watch for him. Thing is some girls may not like him so much anymore because of the explicit display of women in that video.
