Cool & Dre Compare New Lil Wayne Album To OutKast’s Aquemini

Faced with numerous delays, Lil Wayne’s label is rumored to have reservations about the rapper’s upcoming rock album Rebirth . However, producers Cool & Dre swept such concerns aside, insisting to MTV News that the effort is still very much both “a Lil Wayne album” and “a rap album.”

The Miami-based team has produced a number of songs for Rebirth, described as “anthemic records.” “We wanted to create music for him that could stand beside his performance, which is tough,” said Dre. “The way he was performing, I can only compare him to Freddie Mercury or Jim Morrison, guys that put it all out onstage.”

“It’s almost like where OutKast was when they made Aquemini,” added Dre, drawing comparisons to the creative license of the Atlanta duo for their ambitiously sprawling 1998 classic. “It’s still a rap album, but was it really a rap album compared to all the other rap albums at that time? André Benjamin was evolving artistically to where he’s at now — Wayne is doing the same thing, and he’s not afraid to show you his growth.”

Fans can make their own judgment as Rebirth is scheduled to hit stores on June 23. – Devin Chanda

now cool and dre dont tell me that u guys are that stupid. the only reason lil wayne made this album is to try to gain a bigger audience than he already has. dont go and disrespect andre 3 stacks by comparing this gay faggot rock and roll album to aquemini.

    • tony

u right! The Gay Bitch Wayne is Garbage. Look like Whoopi GoldBerg. She look better. Andre 3 stacks is way better.

      • Person

YALL CRAZY LIL WAYNE DA BEST

    • http://xxlmag.com BD

EMINEM will be releasing 2 new singles b4 the release of his album Relapse May 19th. The 1st will be “Ol Time’s Sake” ft. Dr. Dre (5/5) then “Beautiful” (5/12)

  • DownSouth

Wow, that’s a pretty big claim to compare this new lp to Outkast’s classic. You really can’t compare anyone to Outkast because they are like no one else. I admire them because they’re able to make the kinda music they want and are still accepted. Most rappers have to follow the formula.

    DOWN SOUTH!!!

  • IndyKid

I know all the Outkast guys are gonna jump on this one but is it really all that different? They’re not saying that they’re similar albums but situationally, it is similar. Outkast was operating on the border and outside of their own genre a little with Aquemini and that’s the type of situation Wayne is in. People might say that Waynes doing it for a broader fan base but how is that different than Outkast? You think they did it out of ‘pure artistic expression’? Please… Waynes been into rock music his whole career. Check Tha Carter. It’s got all kinds of rock riffs and guitar hooks on it. Now that he’s making an album on it he’s suddenly going for a broader fan base? I think not. I’m curious to see how it turns out Wayne.

    Indy

    • BIBBS

FIRST OFF OUTKAST DIDNT OPERATE OUTSIDE “THEIR OWN GENRE”, THEY WERE CREATING THEYRE OWN STYLE. THERES NOT EVEN WORDS THAT CAN DESCRIBE THAT ALBUM BUT BEING SIMPLY AN OUTKAST CLASSIC. AND THEY DID DO IT OUT OF PURE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION! THEY PROVED THEY CAN DO THAT ON MULTIPLE ALBUMS, ESPECIALLY ON SPEAKERBOX/LOVE BELOW…SO THAT COMPARISON COMIN FROM COOL AND DRE SHOWS THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEY TALKIN BOUT, AND IF WAYNE AINT DOIN IT FOR A BROADER FAN BASE THEN WHY IS HE DOIN IT???? IF HE WAS JUS BEIN HIMSELF HE WOULDNT COME OUT AND SAY HES DOIN A ROCK ALBUM, IT WOULD BE JUS ANOTHER WAYNE ALBUM, CLEARLY THIS ALBUM HAS A PURPOSE, WHAT ELSE CAN IT BE???

  • Mutada al sader the king

Were are the fucking AsherEM and Rick Ross numbers??????????????

    • Jamal7Mile

I think it’s tomorrow. I heard that Banks put out a diss track, but I can’t find it.

      • yoprince

LMAO.. Banks should try putting out a regular track.. see if anyone can find that.

        • macdatruest

“LMAO.. Banks should try putting out a regular track.. see if anyone can find that.”

          BBBWWWAAAAA!!!!!!

  • E20

Cool & Dre need to stay out of interviews and stay behind the pro tools.

Aquemini was a soul/funk/hiphop album. No where near 90′s Rock and Roll/ Heavy Metal featuring wack ass singing mixed with auto tune.

And because people believe everything famous people tell them on the internet, there are gonna be hundreds of thousands 13 – 20 year olds running around comparing this BS Wayne is doing to Aquemini without even listening to the Outkast Classic which features no singing by Andre 3000 and no auto tune.

    • BIBBS

      NUFF SAID!

  • General

I can see how a lot of people are going to get up in arms about this because Wayne lyrically will never be on Outkast’s level, but…

I think if you actually read the article or listened to the interview you would see that Cool and Dre are only using Outkast as an example of the way Wayne is experimenting/evolving with his music right now.

Personally, everything I’ve heard so far doesn’t have me very excited or sold on this new project of Wayne’s, but I guess we will see after Cool and Dre put their touch on it

    • D-Block

dont fuckin bullshit i guarantee u that lil wayne never wanted to be a rock star growing up hes just tryin to get more money because hes a greedy black jew.

      • General

Or maybe…ok he probably is a greedy black jew, but making money is why they make the music…if it wasn’t they would give away everything they did for free

  • SOUTHSIDE A-TOWN

boss & rosh (or roth whatever) # probably be up tommorow. it’ll have been a whole week.

    • $ykotic

That’s why I was posting 4/29 last week.

Tomorrow is the day. Everybody has been real quiet though. Something ain’t right. No bragging, nothing.

  • PARIS PERSHUN

    GET THE FUUUUUCCCCKKKKKK OUTTTTAAAAA HEREEE!!

WAYNE BULLSHIT ASS “I WANNA TRY SOMETHIN NEW ASS ALBUM” CANT BE COMPARED TO NOTHIN,NOTHIN,NOTHIN THAT OUTKAST HAS EVA DONE. AND WHY THE FUCK NIGGAS ALWAYS SINGLE OUT ANDRE LIKE BIG BOI AINT IN THE FUCKIN GROUP……WAYNE JUST WANT THE EXTRA ATTENTION FROM “MAKING A ROCK AND OR ROLL” CD….DRAKE PROBABLY GHOSTWRITIN MOST OF THE SHIT ON THERE ANYWAY(LIKE HE BEEN DOIN SINCE TAKIN GILLEY SPOT))) CO-SIGN MUTADA TOO…. WHERE THE FUCK IS THEM NUMBERS….

  • tony

Good news what i call it. When Dre and Cool make a beat for you. Its going to get heard. Cool and Dre can make a beat for a Dog and it will go Gold or Platium. These guys are Underrated. If it was not for them. Miami music would be in the Grave Yard!

  • moresickaMC

    What an insult to Outkast.

  • http://myspace.com/theregimeteam Black

Just cause YOU do something YOU have never done b4 doesn’t mean your inventing the wheel. Wayne does a “rock” album but Prom Queen sounded like some Fall Out Boy shit.

  • El Tico Loco

Outkast naturally will think outside of the box thus the name. Lil Wayne will jump on whatever he sees hot at the time. Love Below inspired 808′s now Lil Wayne gonna put his own spin to it and call it original. Sorry it don’t take x rays to see thru bullshit and this is what that album’s gonna be. Cool and Dre have a knack for making hits but is all cookie cutter shit they haven’t a “damn who made this?” kinda beat, so in turn they are overrated.

  • Beast McCoy

They must have some good weed down in the 305 because these two cats must be high as a motherfucker for comparing lil wayne to rock and rap legends like Outkast & Jim Morrison and maybe that comparison to Freddie Mercury might be right on the money after all FM was part of a male band named Queen and Wayne loves his “Pa”. Either way Cool & Dre haven’t made a ripple since Dre ethered his girl’s [Christina Milian] music career with that SUPERTRASH last album she made that he helped helm on the production side that subsequently led to her being dropped from Island/Def Jam. Oh by the way Dre where your solo album at? That’s right it’s still on the shelf scheduled for Neverary -my bad. Like I said the 305 must have some bomb ass weed or these boys have been smoking weed laced with dust after saying this kind of nonsense. These boys look like they might be going the way of Poke and Tone – M.I.A. on the back of a milk box.

    • General

      Damn a lil sensitive aren’t we…
Dre must a tapped your girl or something…
I think everybody is overreacting to this shit.
They ain’t comparing Wayne to Outkast, they are comparing the fact that he wants to take his music in a different direction to the way Outkast did with theirs after their first 2 CD’s.
So take a deep breath and calm down.
Yes Wayne is still overrated and no nobody thinks that he is on Andre and Big Boi’s level lyrically

      • D-Block

ITS TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS. outkast wanted to make a different style and stand out as their own. lil wayne makes shit thats the same as everyone else because he knows thats what people like and thats what people will pay money for.

        • General

So you should make music that nobody likes?
Its about takin chances on the music…

I can’t stand Wayne, but I also can’t stand when people just hate for the sake of hating…

I don’t know anybody that is excited about this new Wayne CD, but this is what he wants to do, just like when Outkast turned left with their music I wasn’t really excited about that either…
I wanted to hear some southernplayalistic shit, but they went down a different lane that is the only point that the interview and the article was making

  • Seatown

What a joke…comparing Lil Wayne to Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison and Outkast.

  • Nate

    No comparison at all.

Big Boi and Dre are TALENTED.

They have MEANING behind their rhymes.

    They have true VISION

They BOTH have better flow, and lyrical skill.

    No auto-tune- no gimmicks.

They were original. LIL WAYNE copies a lot.

    What was the comparison again???…

    • RiZob

Boy STOP! everybody just calm down, yall can hate Wayne all day long, thats cool, this is indeed America…But, at the end of the day, you gotta respect Wayne…you can’t call him wack, you can’t say hes not one of the top rappers, you cant say he’s garbage blah, blah, blah…..if you don’t like him, don’t listen to him, but some of yall go to far when yall are trying to convince other people not to like him….

    • yoprince

LMAO.. damn, i love outkast, but seriously… the STANNING is getting outta hand.. wayne can rap circles around big boi at this point in his career off flow alone. Big Boi’s flow been stale since he hopped on that I’m So Hood Remix and got outrapped by everyone. nigga’s verse was hot garbage, and he kept it up for a while.

wayne is nice, stop hating. reaching a broader audience is NOT a bad thing. it’s called being great at what you do.

if you really think that outkast wasn’t trying to reach a broader audience back when big boi was trying to spit like he was from NY, and when andre started singing full love songs, you’re a naive fool. the only thing that matters is if you do it well. outkast did and that worked for them.

and we’ll see if wayne does and it works for him.

  • $ykotic

    @ General

I see you. The only thing is that C & D made a BAD comparison.

    @ PARIS

    Real talk!

Personally I think the J League is better. Ya’ll stretch out those fingers for tomorrow!

  • BIGNAT

WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT WHEN YOU MAKE A CLAIM LIKE THAT I WANT GREATNESS. NO MORE LIKE I EXPECT GREATNESS WHEN YOU COMPARE SOMETHING TO AQUEMINI. AQUEMINI IS A CLASSIC NOTHING IN WANYE’S CATALOG IS FUCKING WITH IT. I SAY THIS IN ADVANCE WITHOUT EVEN HEARING REBIRTH THAT IT WON’T TOUCH AQUEMINI.

  • Superstar Extraordinaire

fuck outa here……in no way is aquemini like thise gargoyles ……aquemini is a classic this dude prolly wont sell shit…..oh hold up, these lil black kids w/ skinny jeans gon buy his shit

  • OG_912

Its 2 things i have 2 get off my chest.

    1. The funniest thing is 10 yrs from now rap fans will probably be sayin this same thing about 1 of wayne’s albums compared 2 some other rapper’s, most likely
    2. And Im not %100 sure but I dont think any of you even heard the album

And yall niggas dont realize that if u already biased towards a feeling b4 you’ve heard it, then you gon hate if its good or not. Aquemini is a classic album hand down. but i think everyone is takin more from it then what cool n dre said. Matter of fact, i honestly think niggas be readin the headlines and then just commenting. Pay attention 2 detail. 1

  • Southcidal

Not on Outkast level? Go back and listen to Idelwild Album, a song called Hollywood Marriage and you tell me if he’s on their level or not.

Yall hating on Wayne only because he is not from NY, LA or Atl.

    That’s some hoeshit.

If he was from New York, he’d be praised like Jay-Z after he made the Orphan Annie bullshit.

  • macdatruest

Damn, niggas hate Lil’ Wayne that much??? Lil Wayne who started out wit the Hot Boyz and been workin all his career??? Damn. Personally, I know whenevr I hear Wayne on a song I enjoy the little fucker cause its like he get yo attention even like when he make a cameo. Real talk at the end of the day, dude gone be a legend. And it wasnt cause he got shot, wasnt cause he had a media hype campaign for his album, it was because he made his self hot. Him and Juvie always stood out in the Hot Boyz. Nigga was recordin wit Bun B back when he couldn’t swear. Lil Wayne got history in the game, and he grind. Fuck it, I’m fuckin’ wit Wayne. But Outkast music is historic hot shit. They was the 2nd coming of A Tribe Called Quest.

  • Vicious Seiger

Being not the biggest fan of Lil Wayne yet definitely not part of the lynch mob against Lil Wayne. I see it like this. I am tired of hearing him. He has been the most oversaturated personality in the “Hip Hop Public Eye” since Ja Rule – Who I like a hell of alot more [50 lovers start your hatin']. See he’s not a bad artist but the focus that XXL and other media outlets put on him has made him this bigger than life persona that has really made labels think “Why make good music when we can make anything featuring lil wayne and it might sell?” See I don’t hate Wayne personally I hate what he & T-Pain represent – Superhomogenization. Where music isn’t organic and it’s all manufactured lifeless recycled crap. Now that’s not saying he makes crap it just saying that no one is wants to really take REAL chances anymore. The music business has degenerated to a field where it’s 90% personality and 10% talent instead of vice versa or a common balance. I just perceive this as another ill conceived concept that has very little merit.

  • balaramesh

soulja boi is working on the next “life after death”

gucci mane next album is the next “reasonable doubt”

bow wow when he comes out of retirement will be the next “illmatic”

dem franchise boys are working on the next “36 chambers”

officer rick ross’s next 50 cent diss will be “2nd round knockout”

cool and dre’s next production will be considered the new “chronic”

flo ridha will become the most respected lyricist in hip hop

lil wayne’s next album will be the next aqemini

    • yoprince

      LMAO.. ok that was funny

dumb as hell to compare lil wayne to those d-list acts (except ricky and C&D)… but at least it was funny.

  • lil dizzy
