Lil Wayne Goes Triple Plat, Rappers Get Post Grammys Sales Boost

Many rappers experienced a bump on this week’s charts following the 51st annual Grammy Awards.

According to the Nielsen SoundScan, The Lonely Island – the comedic project fronted by SNL’s Adam Sandberg – lead the rap pack. The album, Incredibad, which features cameos by E-40, T-Pain and Justin Timberlake, landed at the no. 13 spot, moving 47,510 units in its debut week.

Falling seven spots to no. 16 is Kanye West. While he slipped on the charts the Louis Vuitton Don sold more copies of 808s & Heartbreak this week, selling 36,780 discs. After three months Ye has a tally of 1,328,000.

Two slots down is Atlanta rap giant T.I. at no. 18. Clifford Harris, Jr. also benefited from the Grammy Awards, enjoying an almost 10,000 sales bump. The Paper Trail sold 33,330 copies this week- making his overall sales stand at 1,694,520.

At no. 29 is rap superstar Lil Wayne. The New Orleans bred rapper sold almost 7,000 more copies of Tha Carter III this week compared to last. Officially gaining triple platinum status this sales cycle, Weezy has scanned 3,012,110 units after 36 weeks on the charts, selling 26,960 this week alone.

Rounding out the Top 40 is New Jersey-bred singer Akon, who sits at no. 36. Kon’s Freedom sold 23,240 discs this week compared to last week’s 22,790. After 11 weeks the hip-hop hookman has yet to reach gold stats, selling 489,770 overall. – Elan Mancini

    The south stays winning.

  • Mutada al sader the king

^ Yep. Wonder how much he did worldwide. Probably could tack on another 2 million. The south done had it locked for damn near most of the decade. West had thier time, East did it big (remember the shiny suit era ? ) Ha Ha,.. But South was getting money even during the Easts time. Master P and no limit, put out a record a month and most of them went Plat, some gold+++. Then the south just took over in this bitch.

West is looking better with crooked, Lamont, Game, and a few others.

NY’s Got Maino, and Jim Jones. Ha, Ha, Ha

WOW, DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT ALL BY YOURSELF? ARE YOU HATIN’ CAUSE THE SOUTH LIKE TO HAVE A GOOD TIME? MAYBE IF SOME OF YOU NIGGAS IN THE NORTH STOP MEAN MUGGING AND THINKING YOU ARE BETTER THAN EVERYBODY ELSE, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SALE SOME RECORDS.

        • http://xxl ryan

deres actually good artist in the south that can spit but sum of u fools rather snap all day 2 soulja boy than support them. n i could care less bout record sales. its not my fault i have the IQ 2 listen 2 a nas album n actually understand it.

Sorry, used to be Nas’ biggest fan, but nowadays seems dude juss half-ass reads some article on some news website, totally misunderstands what’s being said, and pens a whole verse to it. And yes, there are some dope mcs in the south. Scarface, Young Jeezy (yeeeaaah), Luda, not a big t.i.p. fan but he better than most these mainos etc, but these ain’t necessarily the people doin #’s. That’s the industry though. When was the last time Jada had a hot single? But he one of the dopest in the game, let alone the east. I live out here now, but the west coast needs to step it’s game up, literally.

          Yeah, I said it.

mutada you’re right..the only superstar to come out of nyc in this decade has been 50 cent and he got signed on the west…new york hasn’t had an rap group or artist that they have supported independently…new york radio used to break indys back in the day.the west coast and south are easier markets to break into especially if you’re from those regions.. independent artists from the west and south have historically recieved constant support from thier hometown.new york unfortunately hasn’t adopted that support for the local rapper.I think new york artist need to change it up…I say that new york is in a post biggie, jay z state…..the average new york rapper basically says the same thing and flow the same…all diversity is lost in nyc..in the 80′s and 90′s we had a rainbow for different styles of rappers ranging from kool g rap to de la soul…Now nyc is homogenous and mundane…we are close minded and i believe that our conception of a top choice mc’s has narrowed since b.i.g and hova.. do you think a group like outkast would of blown if they were from nyc? i can’t believe that jones, ron browz and maino is the best that we have to offer..that’s awful.the south wins because they get behind their talent..nyc doesn’t especially for independent artists.i have put out records and the majority of my support comes from the west….

Who’s responsible for killin’ hip-hop? Answer: EVERYBODY!!!!!!!
    Let’s start with…
    1. The artist-Coming with formulaic bullshit time and time again. Album is 16 tracks: 3 singles and 13 piles of manure. This is because of…
    2. The labels-Not giving a shit about the actual artform of hip-hop, just lookin’ to turn a quick buck (and keep their corporate daddies happy) by feeding bullshit to the masses.
    3. The DJ’s (not all but a lot of them)-keeping said bullshit in rotation to the point of nausea, brainwashing you into liking shit that you can’t stand through sheer repitition. This is because the (radio) DJ’s are handcuffed by…
    4. The program director-Play what the people want to hear so they’ll listen. The more listeners, the more the station can charge for ads. And they also have corporate daddies (and mommies) to keep happy, as well. But the bulk of the blame lies at the feet of…
    5. The fans-The reason the labels keep pumping the bullshit out is that we buy it. God forbid an artist says “damn the status quo” and makes some good music from the heart, 9 3/4 times out of 10, no one buys it. It’s a miracle Nas actually went gold with the “Untitled” joint in today’s climate. That’s damn near like diamond when you think about it. Just an opinion from a 30-something hip-hop head who remembers what this music was and what it could still be.

you are on point….there needs to be another radio format for hip hop or break new artists again…

By the way, some of y’all act like the south got the monopoly on wack music. Hello? Chingy, Yung Berg, Mims, etc. Every region threw some wack shit on the table. If New York cats quit beefin’ over dumb shit, dickridin’ the south and put as much effort into their albums as they do their mixtapes, they might have a little resurgence. Look at Detroit. They might not have the sales (yet) but musically, they’re whuppin’ a lot of ass right now between Royce, Black Milk, Elzhi and whatever unreleased J Dilla joints pop up. Finally, in case you care, I’ve been living in the south for 11 years but the 23 before that was in Jersey so I’ve seen almost every era of this shit.

can you imagine if there were no such thing as a bootleg? i wonder how many copies weezy would of sold then

  • gkid12345

Honestly for NY to comeback we need an artist to come outta nowhere and bring all the attention back. Basically we need somethin like how biggie took it back to the east when the west was on top, he shifted majority of the attention back. Hopefully another B.I.G type of Mc will emerge

I think Shyne might be able 2 give NY a buzz, but as far as a region really coming back its not gonna hpn for a min.
