XXcLusive: Tru-Life Paid $300K To Leave Def Jam, Still Roc-ing W/ Jay-Z

After responding to XXL‘s milk carton via YouTube earlier this week, Tru Life caught up with XXLmag.com to explain his situation with Def Jam and Jay-Z.

Tru, who signed with Roc La Familia, Jay-Z’s world music subsidiary imprint under Roc-A-Fella, explained his new relationship with the label since Hov’s departure from the Roc’s parent company, Def Jam.

“I was Roc-A-Fella all day first off, let’s get that clear,” the L.E.S. rapper told XXL. “I signed to Roc La Familia but I was always Roc-A-Fella. I was just Latin, but when that folded it was easy, they just moved me over to Roc-A-Fella. I’m a smart business man so when I found out Jay-Z was gonna leave – cause I got the heads up, cause that’s my big homie – I didn’t wanna stay there either at Def Jam.”

“As far as Def Jam is concerned, I didn’t wanna be in an upside down situation,” Tru continued. “I had seven deals on the table before I took that deal and I only took it because of Jay-Z. So I felt like if he’s leaving, I wanna leave too.”

But don’t get it twisted. Tru made it clear he got paid before he packed up. “It was also in my contract that if they didn’t put out my album, they had to give me $300,000,” Tru revealed. “So being the smart businessman that I am I took that $300K, they did it under the radar so nobody really knew, but I been was off of Def Jam for a while. We did it before Jay-Z actually left. I left Def Jam, but I’m still with Roc-A-Fella, I’m still with Jay-Z. Me and Jay was just out in Vegas balling out, spending stacks. You can ask Jay.” – Elan Mancini with additional reporting by Anthony Roberts.

Stay tuned for a full-length Tru Life feature coming soon on XXLmag.com.

” I’m still with Jay-Z. Me and Jay was just out in Vegas balling out, spending stacks. You can ask Jay.”

Is it me or do rappers sound more and more like little children braging about what they got for their birthdays?

The only reason Tru Life was in Vegas, because Jay-z’s weed doesn’t carry itself and Memphis Bleek had the day off.

This nigga is so corny that the label paid him to leave

  • http://www.uptownempire.com Trouble

They paid him $300,000, instead of putting out his album and loosing $600,000 on marketing and distributing his lame ass music, that wont sell.

  • http://www.rap-game.dk Jonaseddie

    Word up Trouble!

  • Beat it

That Nigga shot that video in Atlantic City, who you fronting for!?!

Why is XXl even posting this? You dont bother with other milk carton rappers, let tru life fade away like we all want him to do.

And if they REALLY paid you 300k you wouldnt have been riding around in that astrovan I saw you in last week.

  • http://www.rapaveli.com Ambition-1

Okay, I can partially believe that but what about all the shit he was talking in that half ass video the other day. First off he said he bought 6 black cars. To be nice lets estimate those at say 50K a piece. 50 times six equals 300K right there. He said that he was renting the spot for 15K a night. He’s still out in Vegas “ballin” out so lets say he stayed for at least a week. 15 x 7 = another 105K. So if Def Jam payed him 300K to get the fuck off the label and he turns around and blows approximately 400 and some change that makes him a smart business man? My guess would be that Jay-Z doesn’t have anything to do with this clown and never did!

Tru Life was someone Jay put on to go at Dipset, but theres no need for him now.

The only time that he was on mixtapes and makin music, was when he was dissen Dipset, on behalf of Jay-Z. I believe he might have got the bread for being shelved, but not $300K, maybe $100k tops he did NOTHING for defjam, and he cant spit so Jay probably had a do-boy clause in his contract alotting him a couple hundred K for someone to carry his weed. Soon he will being doing shampoo commercials

*Hell Rell and J.R Writer murder this clown on like 6 songs.

Damn, i always thought Tru Life was gonna be the next rapper to blow outta NYC, but i guess i wrong though, in the words of Joe Budden “FUCK NEW YORK”

  • The_Truth

“. . .I’m still with Jay-Z. Me and Jay was just out in Vegas balling out, spending stacks. You can ask Jay.”

Not hating. . .but I can’t respect these type dudes, let alone buy your album.

  • http://xxl All Dae

Come on this situation is so phony. Jay spending stacks is a lot bigger than Tru spending stacks.

Still where’s the music. No leaks, no colabos, no mixtapes?

Dude should make music and leave the balling to real ballers. It doesn’t take from his credibility if he’s broke.

Sean Price is broke compared to some rappers and he steady puts out albums.

    “You can ask Jay” Hilarious

  • http://xxl All Dae

Being on Roc La Familia is not being on Roc-a-Fella. If Jay wanted this guy on Roc-a-Fella he would have signed him there. Jays not dumb. Tru Life was Roc La Familia. He’s like a Wu affiliate but not in the center crew.

Besides the milkbox is not about money it’s about missing on the rap scene. This chump should have flexed his flow skills to prove he’s still around.

  • louie mo

only claim to fame this cat got is that beef with mobb deep on the first beef dvd……. nigga you is a mixtape artist at best….. g-unot killa should get at this nigga ……..

  • Curtis75Black

He left Def Jam only because Jay Left ? Riight. Jay can afford to leave a label, he’s proved himself. Tru on the otherhand getting a “heads up” from Jay sounds fishy.

  • Mutada al sader the king

I’m sure after uncle sam got his chunk of the 300K, which probably amounted to 35-40 % so lest say 120K, that left true with a lump sum of around 180K, add to that his mangers standard fee of 15%, that would shave off another 27K, leaving him with about 153K, then lets figure in that he needed to retain council (lawyer) for this deal, which would add another 10-15 to the equation. Levaing his with about 138K, after taxes, manager and lawyer. 138k not bad for not putting out an album. The house that he showed was probably a property in Jersey that he purchased and bout at the hight of the realesate bouble, and average home in Jersey probably goes from anywere beetween 150k – to 500k and up. So I’m sure he has a heft mortgage payment probably in the range of 1500 – 2500 a month, not to mention the 20-30% he needed to put down to purchase.

sorry, Im from Jersey. Northern New Jersey and the average goes for 450,000 or better right now. Before this econmic shit fell the average was about 600,000. So, this nigga Is broke as fuck and any property he owns or lives In Its probably leased or owned by Jay.

  • ee-city

this guy is faking the funk to supreme levels, we were laughing at that video, him showing that lil def jam money they gave him to break out, i hope def jam had an order or something when they paid him that dough stating that he had to keep his mouth shut because they did under the radar, i hope he has to pay that back, foolio

you cant ball with jay, yous a straphanger my dude

  • Mutada al sader the king

    @that nigga

Thanks for clearing that up, he’s leasing without and option to buy ! LOL

  • JERZEY

MAN FUCK THIS NIGGA TRU LIFE. THIS STUPID FUCK. HE A BROKE MOTHAFUCKA WIT HIS NON LYRICAL ASS. HE LEFT DEF JAM CAUZ JAY WAS LEAVIN, THAT MAKES HIM MORE FUCKIN STUPID, U THINK JAY WOULD LEAVE A LABEL IF U WAS LEAVIN, HOP OFF OF JAY DICK HE AINT WORRIEN ABOUT U. JAY PUT OUT LIKE 3 ALBUMZ HIS HE SIGNED HIM, IF JAY WAS REALLY FUCKIN WIT HIM LIKE THAT HE WOULD OF AT LEAST PUT HIM ON A TRACK AT LEAST. • http://www.rapaveli.com Ambition-1

Jerzey, no disrespect fam but I think thats one of the reason the hip hop is fucked up right now. Take a look at all the rappers out there who are only on the scene because they’re in good with somebody big. If Jay-Z puts his name on anything you do, or he gets on a track with you he automatically makes you about 5 million times hotter than you were before that. At that point it has to be up to the artist to make themselves hot and go out and sell records as well as create a buzz for themselves. After all this shit this week with Tru Life I just see a non-qualified rapper who doesn’t have his priorities straight.

He’s trying to make it seem like its all about money. This dude has absolutely no love for the game nor the culture and he just wants to be seen in the limelight because he has low self-esteem. At the end of the day my brother you’re still a man. Hip hop and America in general is all fucked up because people think that money is the key to everything. I see things this way, if you have money you don’t have to say it. If you’re the boss then you don’t have to say it. It’s those who are less than men and can’t stand the sight of themselves in mirror that have to find other outlets and objects to feel like they’re worth shit.

XXL asks where’s the nigga at in regards to RAP MUSIC and he gets on youtube flashin cash and cribs that nobody believes is his. We’re all wrong for taking so much time to speculate on whats goin on in his world but the truth of the matter is that this dude might be the biggest hip hop fraud ever.

  • MR. UNDI$PUTED THE MOGUL

Hate, Hate & more Hate, you Underground, behind the scenes, internet thugz are ridiculous. You’ll find every reason to slander someone. The man was chillin’ in a Smooth ass High roller suite, counting way more $$$$(in Ca$h) than the average american makes in a year(after taxes), getting into a $350,000 Mercedes Maybach rented or not, & niggaz is talking shit!!! There isn’t one person on this site or any other website, who would’ve been dissed by a prominent Hip Hop magazine & not stood up for themselves, to say “look just because you have’nt seen me lately or heard any new music from me; I’m broke & in the gutter!”. This caters to our ignorance. There isn’t one honest up & coming MC who if Jay said “I want to sign you right now here’s a contract, have your lawyer look it over” not sign to his new ROC Nation label. No one unless they were there knows what happened behind the scenes with Jay & all his old friends turned foes, but I’ll say this & I know it’s TRU. None of those same people (Dame,Dehaven etc.) was saying shit when they were riding the Jay-Z money train. As soon as Jay said I can make bu$iness deal’s on my own (Dame) & not treat people like shit or give losers from his past $$$ for nothing, then he’s shady!!! correct me if I’m wrong wasn’t Dame in Cam’s video co-signing it when they had JJ from Good Times pretending to be Jay dissing him? And now Jay is supposed to feel sorry for him, Fuck You Dame!!! let Cam & Jenny bail your broke ass out. I’ve digressed but fuck it, my point has been made again. Do you TRU, I hope the album or mixtape is the BOMB like TRU YORK.

    PEACE!!!!!
    $ MOGUL GAME!!!! ’09

    • E

you fucking idiot, no one is hating on his stacks. just stating that xxl was wondering where he was musically and here he comes showing all this money he has and not even dropping a hot 16.

  • Rizzop

There alot of e-hatin on this site, like ya’ll was there to know dude DIDNT get 300k. Shit is gettin real sad in the world when people start knockin people you never met in your life….its only entertainment people! Damn near 98 percent of ya’ll have ever earned 100k in a year in your lives, let alone 300k…. just to get off a label?? As long as he owns his music, hes good.

  • yoprince

^^^damn tru life if you gonna post just be real with it..

  • http://www.classandgrime.com RCV

No disrespect to Tru-Life, but since when has being with Jay been with worth anything?

  • http://www.diamondsport.ning.com FrankWhite

If he was out in Vegas with Jay Z then that explains all the money.

Tru probably asked Jay to let him “play front” with the cash.
Hey I might say that Jay was even filming the video.
    Ya think??

  • Justice4all

Why do we even care about these rappers? For real…Why? Somebody answer that. Who cares what they do for real. You balled out? Good for you. What, you want a cookie? A cake baked?

  • Nate

Sorry Mr. Too early to name yourself that lame when you are def outdebated and over disputed..

First off none of us real ones need to be a “thug” or “thugz” as you call it to point out the b.s. we have seen in the game since XXL started. It isn’t a product of them but since the mid 90′s increasing ignant “MC”s (he doesn’t even deserve the title) like Fluke York think that flashing debatable owned cash = skills on the mic. The real skillz embodies hip-hop more than Fake York even if he needs to grind for high 5 figures each year…

I know people that make 6 figures a year who mentored me and are in their late 30′s but still don’t know how to SAVE. So it doesn’t matter if the next dude REALLY has all that money he flashes when he wastes it all. At 40years of age he won’t have any real EQUITY in a home much less have one PAID in FULL. Tru Life could learn a little history just looking up those three words like Soulja Boy does Ice T
A lot of smart young moneymakers who make the best of their time, save and create something in this world. A true Boss can spend all he wants, and continue to CREATE Wealth. Fake Suicide just keeps spending money much of which he doesn’t have or he ACTS like he spending money he doesn’t have… I’m still not impressed by the street team, and 2nd cousins on here who want to back him up as if:

there aren’t 150 other better MC’s in the game right now… Over 25 per region at least…

The lamest part is the imagery that even if you have all that legit or not as YOUR $$ the idea that you have to flash it or prove it, but his music couldn’t do it on his own. It’s easy to see people who have all the luxury things, but as far as the music game goes I want good music. Anybody who has lived a little can find people with money. Tru Life is just doing the same old, same old for the 15 year olds trying to impress. Make a good album and sell it, that’s just a start idiot. I don’t give a damn about the DAME, Jay TMZ, bitch ass ho soap opera daytime gossip. That’s for girls or people who like wearing pink…

  • sb

i see we got a few people up here that know a little something about money
