The death of Dr. Donda West, mother to rapper Kanye West, has led to the California Senate to approve a requirement that patients must be given a physical examination prior to cosmetic surgery.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the new measure was enacted as a direct response to West's death. West died as a result of complications from elective surgery she received in California. It was revealed she suffered from coronary artery disease. Legislators believe a physical would have uncovered information that could have prevented her death.

"Many of us are concerned about the quality of care extended to those who receive elective surgery," Democratic State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas explained.---LaTisha Robbins
